Matthews a top 5 Center?

Is AM better than 5 of the six centers above?

I keep seeing people (leafs fans and articles) claiming A.Matthews is a top 5 C in the NHL so is he better than any of the following who I deem to be the top 5 C's last year?

McDavid
Crosby
Malkin
Mackinnon
Bergeron/Kopitar
*Bergeron had 63 points in 64 games. So I have Kopitar as the better full season player.

Not asking if AM will ever be greater but will he be in this upcoming season I think not.

Leafs fan saying no right now, but I absolutely think he has the potential to, just a matter of staying healthy and continuing to expand on what he did the previous two years.

Would not surprise me if he was as high as 3 this year.

I'd argue Tavares over Bergeron/Kopitar for this list

But to answer your question...yes. Easily

Not even top-10 yet.
Might get to top-10 this season, but I'd say top-5 is pretty much out of his reach this season.

Top 10 likely if not probably. Top 5 is a stretch for now, he absolutely has the potential to reach that mark at some point, though.

No, he's between 10-15. Next summer might be a different story, time will tell.

McDavid
Crosby
Malkin
Barkov
MacKinnon
Tavares
Getzlaf
Kopitar
Bergeron
Seguin
Scheifele
Stamkos

In no order, then there's guys like

Eichel
Couturier
Backstrom
Kuznetsov
Barzal
Draisaitl

right there with Matthews.
Solid, I agree he isn't top 5 but I'd have him if healthy as a top 10.

  1. McDavid
  2. Crosby
  3. Malkin
  4. Bergeron
  5. Kopitar
  6. Tavares
  7. Matthews
  8. Barkov
  9. Backstrom
  10. Mackinnon (I know he had a good year, personally I just don't love Mack, and I don't think he's as great as the year he had, but he could easily move up with another great year.)
  11. Scheifele
  12. Stamkos
  13. Seguin
  14. Eichel
  15. Couturier
  16. Kuzy
  17. Barzal
  18. Draisaitl
  19. Couture
  20. Monahan
  21. Karlsson (see Mackinnon)
  22. Getzlaf
  23. O'Reilly
  24. Schenn
  25. Johansen
  26. Staal
  27. Toews
  28. Koivu
  29. Point
  30. Hischier
  31. Trochek
That would be how I would personally rank my top 31 Cs. So yes, I see Matthews as a top 10.
