San Jose traded a first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and forward prospect Sean Kuraly to get Martin Jones. Something similar to this.

Stanley Cup winning goalie on ELC still Penguins would be idiots to keep MAF instead of him. His value would be high if he was for trade.

Jones hadn't backstopped a team to a Stanley Cup. Given what he's accomplished AND the Pens' situation (win now), he would probably cost more.

They might not have a choice. Fleury has a NMC and must be protected in expansion. He also has a NTC that allows him to dictate 18 teams he can be traded to, which doesn't look good for the Pens if Fleury decides he wants to stay in Pittsburgh. Given that there are only a handful of teams that need a starting goalie and don't already have a goalie signed for big money, all Fleury would have to do is name the 12 teams most likely to trade for him and the Pens will be screwed.

Well I shouldn't say the Pens will be screwed. Fleury is only 31 and is an above-average starter. Plus they have two promising young goalies in Jarry and Gustavsson in the organization. Even if they do end up trading Murray, the Pens have a solid future in goal.

This is all speculation right now.

Late first and overager NCAA prospect was the price for Jones.

Kuraly was a 5th rounder with 0.6 points per game in NCAA. Worth maybe a 3rd or 4th in vacuum.

So 20th + 4th round pick for Murray.

Martin Jones didn't accomplish any of the stuff Matt Murray has so it's a start, but you'd have to add more, to get a Cup Winning goalie that isn't some fluke.

there also wasnt an impending expansion draft where every team could only protect 1 goalie, so that should lower the value.

If fleury decides he wants to remain a pen, they will have to take the best offer they can get, which wont be a mid 1st + top prospect

This is the worst analyzing of value I have seen in this thread.

You are wrong.

between his age inconsistent play and fairly large contract they could very well have a hard time finding a new home for fleury.

There is this scenario...

Fleury's contract carries a no-movement clause, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, meaning Rutherford would be compelled to protect him unless Fleury agrees to waive the clause so he can be left exposed in the expansion draft.

there also wasnt an impending expansion draft where every team could only protect 1 goalie, so that should lower the value.

That would be if they couldn't, in fact, move Fleury.

If Fleury decides.

I don't know about that. We're talking about a 22 year old starting goaltender that has already backstopped his team to a cup. And it's not like he's only had one good season, kid has been putting up ridiculous numbers at every level for 3 straight seasons now.

Even with expansion greatly limiting the number of potential trading partners, I think Murray could return at least a mid-1st and a quality prospect, if not more.

Pretty sure MM won't be traded just because of an impending expansion.

Their last resort would be to bribe LV to not touch MM(thus still having the option to trade MAF or MM past exp.) or to buyout MAF(incures a 1.9M caphit for 4 seasons).

Pens are gonna dictate the situation on their terms, not panic because of expansion.

Seems like a pretty unlikely scenario given that Fleury has recently said he wants to remain a Penguin.

All he has to do is not waive his NMC and he's the starting goalie for the Pens again. If I were in his shoes that's what I'd do.

You're right. I highly doubt he'd waive for the exp. draft but that doesn't mean he's the starting goalie for the Pens.
Other things can be done.

You guys are WAY overrating Murray here, I think.

You're attributing the Pens generally outplaying the Sharks to Murray, and attributing the Sharks playing a poor game/being outplayed to Jones. It's simply not accurate at all. The Pens were a far better team in the finals. That's for sure. Murray was fantastic when he needed to be, but he simply wasn't all that tested in the Sharks series. No doubt he deserved to start, he was really good. Jones was really good too throughout most of the year and the playoffs. He looks like Price-lite sometimes. Jones was a big reason the Sharks weren't swept.

So suggesting that Jones is inferior because he hasn't won the cup (as a starter) is just plain silly.

If Fleury decides.

you think fleury would want to go to an expansion team, knowing full well they would likely try to move him at some point as he gets older?

surely that wasnt what he had in mind when he got a full NMC

PIT will keep Murray. They can buy out Fleury and that's also Fleury's trade value if he would waive his NMC for a trade, no value. Other teams won't pay much for Fleury. There will be many UFA goalies available in July.
PIT might trade Fleury for nothing to save the buy out cap hit if Fleury waives his NMC, otherwise he will be bought out.
The funny thing is, if Fleury would waive his NMC for the expansion draft he even might not be drafted. But if PIT asks Vegas to exempt Murray from the draft it will be expensive :)
