If Duchene wants to come home and play in Toronto he will sign here on July 1st when he is a UFA.

I mean, the last thing we should be doing is trading our 1st for another forward

The probable price for Duchene as a rental is a 1st+prospect+B level piece.

Considering Ottawa's apparent unwillingness to trade stars to Eastern Conference teams, and the fact that the Maple Leafs as a major rival go beyond being an Eastern conference team, what kind of "tax" do you think Ottawa would be asking for in order to get the deal done?

There's no chance Duchene is going to Toronto, especially not for a 1st+? unless that ? is something absurd.

It depends on what your needs are. We simply don't need a soft, offensive Centre.

Those other guys have what we're lacking, so it makes them more valuable to us at this time.

By that logic, you might as well bring back Mat Martin. "Need toughness".

Get good players. Seems simple.

so the leafs give up 1st + + for a guy to be the 4th C for 1 year?

kadri has 64g/116pts the last 2 seasons while duchene is at 45g/100pts so he obviously wouldnt bump him

doesnt make any sense at all

No.

No need to get all silly-buggers about it. You can look for bigger, tougher players that are MUCH better than Matt Martin. Easily. It doesn't have to be so black & white.

The leafs have a lot of cap space even when Nylander signs for 6.75 x 6 years. What would it take for the Leafs to pick up Duchene as a rental for the season?

How about a 1st round pick in 2019, and a young roster player?

This would give the Leafs excellent C dept - Matthews, Tavares, Kadri and Duchene

Marleau - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Duchene - Kadri - Kappanen
Johnsson - Lindholm - Brown

... Drool.

Not that it makes sense to trade the 1st, or that Ottawa would take the 1st+

It could make some sense if you think you can sign Duchene to an extension for roughly what you are paying Marleau and trade him back to SJS in the summer.

So the Sharks can get him for a 3rd+meh prospect+D level piece?

No it's not dichotomous. But the logic is flawed. It's about adding total value to your team.

One of the players listed was Michael Ferland. Duchene is a superior player to Ferland. If you had the chance to acquire both players, at the same price, Duchene would be preferable. He brings more total value to the team.

Duchene actually fills a need. He'd be used like he's been used an international events under Babs, which is as a LWer. He's a strong 2-way player with skill, he would be our best LWer, even if it as a rental and slightly not his best position. Outside of Panarin, their isn't likely another player close to his quality who could fill that need as rental.

Now, I can see why people don't want to be after premium rentals at the current costs, but if we are, Duchene absolutely is a fit.

Oh, are we talking about in a science lab's vaccum? Or in reality? Because sure, in a vaccum, Duchene is more valuable.

In reality, he's not at all what the Leafs need......and just watch how they don't trade any 1sts for him this season.

I think this conversation is a bit premature. If the Leafs trade a forward like Nylander for a defenseman, then they might be looking at acquiring someone like Duchene for a playoff run. This would most likely happen at the TDL. Just my opinion.
