The guy is a god damn warrior and I hope he isn't out for long. We can lose a Jost (as much as I love the kid), we can lose a Wilson, but we can't lose Calvert.

Here's to a speedy recovery.

Drops the gloves with Kassian after he steamrolls Mackinnon. Guys on the bench went nuts and scored next shift.

blocks a shot with the side of his head.

This guy better getting some type of recognition from the crowd next Saturday night when they return home.

Team success aside, I wish Calvert a successful recovery. Scary looking injury for anyone, but when one of the toughest players in the NHL can't get to his feet, I think it's an especially bad look for the NHL. Goals are great, but player health needs to be the focus.

I'm really hoping Ryan Clark and Aaron Portzline start using any and all of their connections with the NHL to start a discussion on this hits to the head issue. I understand that the rules make it a judgement call for the officials, but I seriously wonder what directives are being provided to them to help with the call. At this point, I believe they make the calls based upon the star value of the player involved. I mean, a guy is down, he is motionless or tries to get up and falls down. He is bleeding. He had something hit his head. What more is needed to stop the play and allow the player to get medical attention? I wouldn't mind if they created a rule that said if they blow the play dead while a team is in control in a scoring area, that we have a faceoff and only the team that had control of the puck is allowed to participate. Seriously....I would have much rather have Calvert given immediate medical attention and then go strait to a PK situation than have him lying on the ice and open to who knows what. I credit the Blue Jackets for being bewildered as to why the play wasn't blown dead and even after they realized it wasn't being blown down, they kept puck movement away from Calvert.

The players need to make this an issue in the next CBA. If someone gets hit in the head, the play must stop. It's life issue. Too many plays left open to the ref's interpretation are resulting in players missing games. f*** any goals that may be scored. They are swallowing whistles and it is putting lives in jeopardy. Don't get me wrong, Gary Bettman doesn't believe in head trauma being linked to on-going problems but pretty much everyone else in the world can see the correlation. The NHL has shown they don't give a shit about player health, it is time for both the NHLPA and the NHL Officials Association to put the onus on the NHL to make this stuff black and white.

Wish Calvert nothing but the best and full recovery. Such as nasty looking injury and just can't believe it wasn't blown dead. To me, that was a situation where the may should have been a must.

Great to see my boy Calvert back. Let's vote en-masse and get him sent to the All Star game. I would LOVE that.
Didn't ESPN or the NHL list Svatos as a candidate for the Hart trophy one year and we stuffed the ballot and got him up into like 3rd or 4th before they fixed it. The mind is a little fuzzy. I tried to look it up but got depressed reading through pages and pages of links on Google relating to his tortured end.

Gonna start calling him Elmer cause he's the ultimate glue guy.

Makes everyone around him better and cleans up for their mistakes with hard work and smart plays.

He's vastly improved his consistency from last years regular season too, which is great to see. My guess is like most guys who struggle a bit for Bednar their first year, I think he had to get his cardio to the best it's probably been in his life to play Jared's pressure system.

He has been really good for this team. He won't keep up this current scoring pace but he still does so much to help the team and that was evident when he got hurt in the playoffs.

Also.....

I love seeing late bloomers, even better when they're on the Avs

40-50 points from Calvert would be so money

I think he and fellow 'Toba native Colin Wilson and him took a trip out there recently.

Come to think of it...I haven't heard much from Wilson lately. Anyone have any idea where he is...?

Turns out there's a reason he started out the season so well. He's changed his diet and worked on skills at the behest of Nathan MacKinnon.

How a burger, fries and humble pie led to Matt Calvert...

Nate's got the whole team eating sweet potatoes now? Good for him.

Sounds like Calvert has taken the same progression that other gritty guys do under Bednar. Same thing happened with Comeau and also Landy to an extent. Their first years, they struggled with the pace and skating requirements Bednar has, which might be the highest in the league.

After that they seemed to up their conditioning, and at least in Calvert's case, a lot of that is due to diet and not spiking his blood sugar throughout the day. Now he has consistently high energy levels.
