I wonder if Martinook's issue ever got fixed with the first surgery. Of all Canes players there are only two under 48% CF% (5v5) and those are Wallmark (44.4%) and Martinook (40.3%). He was one of the top PK forwards last year but this year Martinook has been behind Aho, Staal, Haula, McGinn, and TT in PK time.

Small sample size but Martinook appears to have been tilting the ice in the wrong direction

Sucks to lose one of our "A"s, definitely a character and morale-boosting guy both on and off the ice. Losing his "gritty" presence definitely sucks too (need someone to help discourage and police the Tom Wilson's)...BUT the group seems to care enough to stand-up for one another at least. Svech is no pushover, Edmundson has some edge, Dzingel doesn't fight a lot but he has on occasion before, Dougie Smash, etc

He’s been one of the few non bright spots so far this season so I’m not shocked he was never really healthy. Guy is an absolute warrior but for Christ sake stop being a hero and get that fixed for good and don’t come back until you’re 100%. Hernias are no joke

I'm guessing we knew Marty wasn't 100 percent from the start, but we were hoping he wouldn't have to be 100 percent to be effective in his role. After four games, it became clear that Marty at less than 100 percent isn't very effective. So, better to get Marty to 100 percent and have him strong for the second half that to have 75 percent Marty chasing the play for six months.

I'd add that having Gauthier show up in the preseason as he did makes it easier to make this decision, as they knew they have a capable forward who can play here for 6-8 weeks on either the 4th line or higher if needed due to play of others or additional injuries.

I don't know, there's a lot of jokes out there about hernias I think.

Not that you like seeing a core leader go down for 6-8, but it's not like losing Staal or Aho in terms of impact. This is a huge opportunity for Gauthier. I can't imagine how pumped he is, after being disappointed by not making the opening roster. I think Necas has proven that he was the right choice for that, though.

Sounds like his core isn’t quite as impressive as we all thought it was.

If there's any possible silver lining to this, swapping Martinook for Gauthier actually makes some sense from a hockey perspective. This is a move that could potentially just make our roster look different, while not actually being worse.

Gauthier may not hit as much, but he'll be in a forechecking role where his vertical speed is an asset. That means an opportunity to see him in the bottom-6 role we all talked about for him in the preseason. Should actually be pretty interesting to see the next chapter in this little saga.

the thought of getting a hernia, then getting surgery to get it fixed, and then potentially getting the hernia all over again... *shudder*

Probably the worst thing about hernias is that once the muscle wall is torn, sometimes it just never regains its strength again. There's only so much that surgery and recovery can do... a lot of athletes just can't get away from recurrences and that's all she wrote for their career. Hopefully the length of this IR assignment means they're giving him the best possible chance at a total recovery before it becomes a chronic thing.
