Looks like it was the Torts connection: St. Louis: New role with Blue Jackets a "win-win for everybody"

The new role came about after some recent conversations with Tortorella and St. Louis, who spent parts of seven seasons together with the Lightning from 2000 through 2008. It will also allow St. Louis to spend the bulk of his time at his residence in Connecticut, where he serves as a coach for on teams featuring his three sons, Ryan, 16, Lucas, 13, and Mason, 11.

"Torts called me a few weeks back," St. Louis told BlueJackets.com today. "He knows what I'm doing right now with my kids and asked if I want to get involved without taking my time with my kids away from me, so to me, I thought it was a win-win for everybody. I still get to do the things I need to do and want to do with my kids but get to help Columbus as well.

"I think it's a chance for me to get my feet wet, get inside the ropes a little bit but still do what I love to do with my kids."

It will be interesting to see, for sure....I think he changes the style first, and then maybe introduces different players if the style doesn't produce.
More slapshots?

Hawt. Doesn't sound like he'll be working much with the players in a coaching manner. Looks more like video review and analysis. Hitch used to do that with retired players.

1st off, how bout we get Jones on the ice over Werenski on the 1st PP.

For those all about the one timers, Jones seems to be 1 of the only guys who can get the puck on net, with speed/velocity on a consistent basis. Werenski is very good with his wrist/snap shot when he HAS TIME. Jones is much better getting the puck away quickly and through traffic. He also is just better and smarter with the puck in the offensive zone while ALSO not getting the "lazy" responses after a "lazy" giveaway or having only 1 winger get caught back on a PK chance that seems to happen all too often with Werenski on the ice.

Jones also seems to have some sort of "chemistry" with Panarin. At the very least their "games" seem to mesh very well.

And get Murray out there more.

I don't see the "issue" with going with 2 defenseman on the points. We have more than capable offensive or two way d men.

Really like to see us go Murray-Jones;;;;;;;;;;;Werenski-Nutivaara

ES and PP

Harrington-Savard, ES-PK

Heavy on Murray-Jones in all situations. Give Harrington-Savard the "1st PK".

Way back in the fire Larsen thread I called for a PP specialist coach to come in, and this is partway to that. I'd like it if they had someone new on the bench running the PP.

I wonder if MSL’s input includes the personnel on the PP units? I’m hoping not as seeing Foligno on PP1 in practice (per Porty) and Wennberg on PP2 doesn’t inspire me. The Captain has one power-play goal in the last 72 games and Wennberg I has has one power-play goal in the last 50+. And here I thought the goal of the PP was to score goals.

Jarmo: "Marty, you are our new Powerplay Consultant."
MSL: "Great. In my professional judgment, I would say your powerplay sucks and advise you to improve it."

I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised.

Since the Blue Jackets took some time off, so did I. After reading Coach Tortorella's comments about how he couldn't get a couple guys to communicate with him and he wrote Marty's # on the board, I expected the CBJ forum to be apoplectic. I expected "Tort's has lost the room" and "nobody is talking to anybody" and "no wonder Panerin won't sign with us" and "the sky is falling". I'm not hearing any of you say those things - so GOOD ON US!! Maybe as a group of fanantics we are growing up.

I applaud the CBJ for doing something in a measured way to address the problem. Now behind the scenes, people probably have some feelings hurt (assoc coaches and some players). But the front office has taken positive, measured steps without blowing up the whole thing. That seems reasonable. Give this some time and some games and see what happens. If two certain Russians don't want to play in C-bus any more, there will be changes aplenty in a couple weeks. Let's just tweek this for now and see what happens. Good job CBJ players, coaches and front office. And good for you (us) fans also for not going all "chicken little" over this move.
