The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club selected forward Martin Kaut with the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft tonight at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Kaut, 18, spent the 2017-18 campaign with HC Dynamo Pardubice in the Czech Republic's top professional league and recorded 16 points (9g, 7a) in 38 games. The Brno, Czech Republic, native split the 2016-17 campaign with Pardubice and HC Dynamo's junior team, registering one point (0g, 1a) in 26 outings with Dynamo and 16 points (4g, 12a) in 22 contests with the under-20 squad.

Kaut has represented his country in numerous international events, including the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y., where he ranked fourth on the team with seven points (2g, 5a) in seven games en route to a fourth-place finish at the tournament. His five assists were tied for third on the team and second among the Czech forwards. The 6-foot-2, 176-pound right wing helped his country win gold for the first time at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2016, tallying four points (1g, 3a) in five games.

Kaut is the first Czech forward to be drafted by the Avalanche since selecting Vaclav Nedorost with the 14th overall pick in 2000. Colorado has now chosen a player from a Czech league in two consecutive drafts, after picking goaltender Petr Kvaca in the fourth round (114 overall) last summer.

I'm on board. Would have rather had a guy with higher pure scoring upside like Bokk, but I love his compete level and two-way game.

Wanted Smith or Veleno but I'm a CHL nut who never really watches hockey overseas so perhaps this was an incredible pick. Hope he's Hejduk 2.0.

Eurolanche will be happy.

Was my early favorite. The kid has NHL size, good skills, and puts effort in on both sides of the puck. We needed a right shot winger in the system too.

A poor-man's Hossa seems like a good comparison. Good wheels, has a scoring touch, will play a 200ft game but won't throw the body around.

I think after one year in the AHL he'd be able to step in as a middle 6 forward for us with 50+ points upside in a few years.

Man the Eagles are going to be loaded with great prospects next year. Going to be really exciting to track our own AHL farm team for a change and one loaded with young talent.

Super pumped Kaut is already planning on playing in the AHL. Hope he can mimic the progress Chytil made this year although that’s a really really high bar.
