The Naki
I don't disagree, but we are still talking about having to get a guy who needs to be good enough defensively where they are not sheltered, or slightly sheltered. Essentially looking for guys like Travis Dermott. Those guys are not perfect defensively, but they are still pretty good, and those two still have a long way to even get to that level. Dermott can play at least 18 minutes a night and can PK.

The problem with Dermott is he's not driving play offensively unless he's getting bottom competition or defending particularly well

So he's not got the positive attributes to negate the negative attributes going against him like Barrie has

We have a lot of offensive play drivers on the backend so it isn't a need for us but if your defensive unit is offensively challenged somebody that puts up points, drives play offensively that you can shelter has value

For us however those kids need to get better defensively to get a look in, they don't have to be perfect just have the positives outweigh the negatives

We've shown with Barrie we are willing to accept some defensive frailties if you can do other things well enough

Abruzzese gets it this week. He had 5 points in 3 games this week with 2 goals and 3 assists. 3 of the points came at ES and 2 on the PP. This is his 2nd POW of the season.

Robertson wins it this month. He had 21 points in 11 games this month with 13 goals and 8 assists. 11 points came at ES, 8 on the PP and 2 shorthanded. This is his 3rd POM of the season and 2nd straight.

Both Nics look like they could push some of the smaller and older leafs like Johnsson and Kerfoot out of the picture in the near future if they keep things up. It doesn't seem Robertson will have anything to prove or even learn in the OHL after this year, and Abruzzese is leading his team playing against men in the NCAA.

Has Ransanen ever gotten a point? Every update he still has 0 points.

Kral is doing pretty good it looks this year
Rasanen shouldn't even be considered a prospect at this point until he shows something.
I might take him off my list next year.

His value is as a defenseman. He's not making the NHL as a winger, especially not on the Leafs. He could make the NHL as a defenseman here, but it's going to take a lot of work.

Worst case, he becomes an AHL offensive defenseman for the Marlies and just needs to be heavily sheltered. Kind of like a TJ Brennan.
We can agree to disagree.
If he doesn’t progress on the D side, he’s got the tools to help on the right wing. It’s not like there’s tons of prospects there.

I'm not worried about the lack of production more than ice time. He's only played a little over 60 minutes of KHL hockey this year. He's not going to produce much with that kind of ice time.

I am mostly just confused as to why he has not moved onto Liiga. I doubt it's Rasanen's choice to stick around in the KHL, because I doubt he is happy with his playing time. I expect him to go to the Liiga next year, and if he does, he could be a top 4 defenseman on a bunch of teams. He is just stuck on a mediocre team with a defense composed of a bunch of former NHLers.

We have Marner, Nylander and Kapanen in the NHL. We have Korshkov, Timashov, Petan, Kara and Bracco ahead of him (at least). Possibly Brazeau too (although not technically a Leafs prospect). Brooks has also played a little bit of wing in the NHL. Does not include any UFA's we may add. That's a lot of bodies ahead of a RHD with no experience at forward.

Not to mention that Duszak would not be any more effective on a 4th line as Bracco would be at this point, so he is extremely limited in his chances as a forward. His shot at the Leafs, or anywhere else, is on RD and improving his defensive game. He is just going to need to put in the work, because he has a promising offensive game for a defensive prospect at his stage.

And if he doesn't turn out, who cares? He was a long shot who was probably not even worth an ELC, but got one after dominating a conference where most prospects struggle to even make it to the ECHL. The fact he even made it as far as he did, and could carve out a career in Europe or the AHL as an offensive defenseman is already a lot further than like 99% of prospects that come from that conference. Dubas just took a shot on the hope that someone super special could have been that 1% and could replace Durzi in our pool, which he's been fine in doing I guess.

He’s Top 4 in no professional league anywhere.

Should have stayed in juniors, then been playing with the Marlies. It’s moot now, no one develops if they don’t play hockey. He’s lost two crucial years, especially for a player of his stature.

He's a top 4 defenseman in the Liiga. Easily. He should not have stayed in juniors. If you are good enough to move up, you do. The more time you are receiving pro level resources and training, the better. He was good enough to move up, but he should have picked a better team than Jokerit. Like if he wanted to go to the KHL, he should have either picked a really good team like CSKA/St. Petersburg, or a really bad team. He would be playing full time on either, but would have still received the resources he would have needed to develop. Picking a middling team in the KHL is the worst place to go as a young player because you are most likely not their best player, and their priority is scraping into the playoffs, not giving ice time to young players or focusing on their development.

He could have played high in a lot of Liiga lineups, and could have been a full time guy in a lot of SHL lineups. Why he wanted to go to Jokerit specifically is beyond me, because even if he wanted to go home, he's hardly at home in Jokerit. Helsinki is far away from where he played as a junior and was born, so besides playing in a city in his home country, which is spending at least half of the time outside of Finland no less, then it makes no sense.

Also, this whole "Marlies" route you are referring to does not exist. There were no spots available for him, so he would have ended up in Europe anyways (because guaranteed he would not pick ECHL over any European pro league).

I’m thinking a couple years ahead. The middle wing spots are going to be fluid imo, with lots of interchangeable parts, mostly on the cheap.
Duszak’s a good skater, he’s got more grit than Bracco, and most of the other guys are lefties.
Marner’s the only lock at right wing long-term, again imo. Korshkov might end up there, but probably more likely a short term interchangeable (rather than core) piece.
I see Willy playing C in a year or two, with JT shifting to the wing. Kappy’s already in the rumour mill.
If he can hang in on the D side, great, and you’re right, if he doesn’t make it, no biggie, I just see a profile that could translate potentially pretty well.

Lineup Changes: Woods and Conrad called up and in. Estaphan in. Brooks, Korshkov and Marchment promoted out up front.
Schmaltz in for Kapla on defence.
Kask to start.

Interesting Woll not even the backup today.
