A lot of guys are trending well though.
Robertson, SDA, Kral, Abramov, Kara, Loponen. Kokkonen has struggled post draft but it's early, and he also came back from injury.
This doesn't even include the guys on the Marlies.

3 assists in 6 games ain't bad for O'Connell either. He's never going to be a world beater but plays that speedy, reliable puck moving game you like out of a bottom pairing guy.

I also feel bad for Stotts. He's kind of stuck in that McGregor role where he's reliable defensively but is not the top offensive option so he's not going to get many offensive opportunities limbo. The jack-of-all, master of none guy. I hope he gets a shot. You know what you get from Stotts every game and he almost always finds a way to be effective, even if it doesn't show up on the scoresheet.

I kind of hope some competitive team will trade for him and get him a more defined offensive role. Calgary's offense is by committee more than having one defined star, and I think Stotts needs a team which can allow him to play with some more offensively talented guys in a role which gives him more specified offensive minutes.

Agreed. I was just surprised by the bad draft picks post. The college guys have had decent starts for sure.
Stotts is a wierd case. The eye test is good but the production doesn't always match, and not being the go to option probably has something to do with it. The kid is also a good faceoff guy which is always helpful. I don't know if he is worth an ELC, but I would sign him to an AHL deal for sure. He is someone to watch over.

I lost any sort of hope in Stotts breaking out offensively. The Hitmen don't have many top scorers or anything but you'd expect some progression as a "top" player on your team.

I saw Loponen not that long ago and he looked pretty good. Pretty good skater with some good tools but he makes bad mistakes with the puck, especially from the defensive zone on.

It's really tough to judge. Calgary is a middling team and going in the expectations with Stotts was that he was never going to be a guy that would dominate play on his own. Instead he would be the reliable type who compliments a couple of skilled linemates by doing the little things and letting them do their thing. In Calgary, he doesn't have a lot to compliment.

In a lot of ways, he reminds me of a more natural center version of Kerfoot with more goal scoring potential. Kerfoot is not going to produce much on his own but he can put up ~40 points with good 3rd line quality players and can give you a reliable all-round game. That would also be more than McGregor, who for the most part topped out as a 4th line defensive specialist, and may be the last little bit of edge needed to get the ELC that McGregor came so close to earning. I fully believe that had McGregor had a slightly better OHL team, or a better showing on the Marlies, he would be on an ELC right now... and I hope the Leafs can bring him in on an AHL deal after this year. But like many others, he probably goes the CIS route.

Hopefully people remember Liljegren’s terrific play before this injury. 8 points in 12 games playing largely on the second PP unit, and playing all those games without Brooks/Petan which Sandin conveniently skipped.

Then he gets hurt early in the first period of his next game again on a predatory hit, just like last year. And nobody does anything about the hit, a knee on knee with an elbow mixed in. Instead you have Keefe whining to the media. This team needs to stand up for itself, just like the big club.
You might have missed it, but the team did come in and stick up for Lilly. Garrett Wilson fought Lashoff after the play.

I saw it, I just don’t consider that sad display of hugging your opponent to be a proper response.

Liljegren needs an MRI of the knee. If there’s an injury here, it’s going to be there. Wonder if the team docs mess this one up, like with his ankle injury.

so you wanted somebody to answer for the hit, then when you find out somebody did respond, it still wasnt good enough because he didnt..what? knock him out? swung his stick at his head?

He literally fought him. IDK what else you wanted his teammate to do.

How come SDA didn't make the OHL super series team?
SDA is a Russian. The CHL teams are composed of Canadian players. Little disappointed SDA did not make the Russian team for the two games against OHL. Also a little disappointed Abramov did not make the Russin team against the QMHL Team.

I saw the “fight”. Did you? When you watch it, tell me if that will make that goon think twice next time.

i didnt, but im fairly sure we have vastly different opinions on whether or not having enforcers etc is actually a deterrent on dirty hits and does anything at all except make your team worse.

The times of carrying a guy who will make a goon think twice are long gone. Look at what players have been getting suspended for lately, its a joke. Right now this is a skate away after your team mate gets smoked lineup now that Kadri is gone, and he never scared any goons, but his edge at least made people aware of him. Even a little acknowledgement of a shot is better than nothing. They need different players and this isn't an HFBoard opinion, you hear it everywhere.
A little too much dangle, and not enough sand.

Russia has always hated players that leave their program, especially ones that leave as early as SDA did (at 15 I believe so that he could enter the OHL draft). He would have to put up even more ridiculous numbers for them to even consider him.

Kizimov had a way better shot at the start of the year but he started horribly.

Lucic was on the ice when Savard had his career ended, thank God that stopped Matt Cooke from injuring anyone else.

Getting bearhugged does nothing. Even if the other enforcer manages to actually get you in a fight without taking a penalty, your absolute worst case scenario is that you take a single hard punch (assuming your head doesn't hit the ice). Nobody cares about fights anymore, it's just a circus act unless it's Iginla vs Lecavalier in the heat of the moment.

The only deterrent is having a guy who's willing to make a borderline hit on one of your stars and get suspended without hurting the lineup.
