Marleau's GP is the most impressive thing in the NHL.

Played since '97-98.
Never played less than 74 games in a full season
1710 GP currently - Less than 60 GP off the alltime record
Aside: Signed for league minimum and 20 in 53 (not good stat but incredible stat for league minimum)
Only 40 years old (young compared to Howe, Chelios, Jagr)

He deserves more credit. 22 seasons ago he was playing in the league and putting up same numbers as today.

Big Ovi fan but this is more impressive than 700. Too bad he isn't mentioned as much.

This is in no way as impressive as 700
Far more imo. To think there there are 22 year olds posting on HFboards that weren't even born when Marleau stepped on the ice in the NHL for the first time and that he hasn't played less than 74 games in full season and still going strong. I think it's far more impressive.

I think it's dumb to compare with ovechkin, mostly because it's not only the amount of goals, it's the speed at which he's amassing them too. But it's apples and oranges

That said, what Marleau is doing is incredibly special and certainly underappreciated. He may have lost some a lot of the skill in his hands, but he is sticking around because he plays smart hockey. He's fast, defensively responsible, wins puck battles, and scores goals for being in the right place. He may not but racking up the points, but he isn't a liability.

Ex players always say how incredible it is when guys hit 1000 games, because it's so hard to be that good for that long, not get injured, etc. Marleau has 700 more games on top of that. That's all of Tyler seguin's career, for example.

All three of Marleau, Thornton and Chara should be appreciated more for what they are doing. Assuming Bouwmeester doesn't play again, the next closest active player behind those three in games played is Eric Staal, and he is 500 away from Marleau!

I hope he breaks the record. He seems like a model nhl player who should get more recognition

If you are more impressed by a guy just showing up than by a guy making money for your company that's on you.

I'd take the productive guy any day over the guy who is "just there".

I'm rooting for him to tack on another season and get the record but holy smokes is it ever a fluff record.

To be good enough to be able to play that many games is impressive. 40-year-olds don't often crack NHL team rosters.

I remember his rookie season and Jeff Friesen complimenting him saying he'll be amazing.

I also value games played as a significant measure of quality of career. After all, not everyone's job is to score goals or points. Games played is the best (trad.) statistical way to compare a stay-at-home d-man and a powerplay playmaker, or a PK specialist and a sniper, for instance.

An NHL coach seeing you as good enough to help his team win a hockey game is a measurement of quality.

I can see how his accomplishment could be seen as greater than that of Ovechkin's. And especially if Marleau manages to overtake Howe for most games played in the history of the league. That is no small feat!

After all, 700 goals has been done many times by many players.

Only 4 players in history have more GP than Marleau
7 players have 700+ goals

Even on pure stat basis it's more impressive.

If you consider era there are only 2, maybe 3 other players with a similar goal total Ovechkin and he will probably end number 1. Marleau‘s longevity is certainly extremely impressive. But being the best at something is just more impressive than doing it the longest. Why Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux are considered 2 of the best players all time even though they both have less than 1000 games played. While Francis and Recchi are considered great players but not amongst the true greats.

  • Marleau has had 3 GWGs this season so far to total 109. One more and he will only trail Jagr, Howe and Esposito in regular season game winners.
  • Marleau's playoff game-winning goals is tied with Jagr. One more and he will trail only Gretzky, Brett Hull, Sakic, Claude Lemieux and Rocket Richard.
  • He's 6'2 218 lbs, a fitness freak on the bike, and it shows in him still flying at top speed at age 40 after just two or three strides up ice (he glides across the offensive blueline at speeds many young players can't while they flailingly chop up ice.
  • He has more goals than Guy Lafleur and as many as Mike Modano, who also played 20+ seasons.
:) I have been a Sharks fan since Larionov and Makarov led San Jose in one of the biggest playoff upsets in NHL history over the loaded Wings. I watched Patty get drafted. I have been to the Shark Tank. I am a Marleau cam. So, let me put his greatness and weaknesses into numbers.

On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is the best and 1 the worst.

Marleau's:

Skating 9
Eye-hand coordination 10*
Work ethic 9
Defensive play 7
Strength of shot 4
Shot accuracy 8
Creativity 4
Hockey vision 6
Hockey sense 8
Playmaking 4
Net presence 9

* to bat pucks out of the air, to convert passes into shots, to recover loose pucks

He can skate, is responsible/coachable, has incredible hands to FINISH plays around the net by burying rebounds, deflecting shots and converting hard quick passes by the crease. His legs are tree trunks and he holds his own by the net. He is like an Esposito around the net with tons more speed and a lot less strength on his shot.

If he had above average or even average creativity with the puck or any power on his shot, wow, his career would have been much different.

He is ideally an offensive role player who needs a linemate to create opportunities and Patty WILL be quick and efficient to finish around the net.

Luke Richardson played 1417 games. Amassed 2055 PIM. Playing at a harder position, during a way tougher period of hockey.
