How is it not a fact that he wants to win a cup? That seems like an enormous reach.

Everyone wants to win a cup. That doesn't mean that's the reason Marleau left a 99 point team to play for a 95 point team.

He'd play for free for a ring.
He's already made 100 million or so in his career.

Maybe, maybe not. This is just another example of a non-factual statement.

Also - if he'd play for free for a ring, why didn't he settle for 3-4 million a year instead of 6? He's been around long enough to know full well that the extra few million of cap space for the Leafs would improve our chances of winning a cup? The fact that he negotiated such a high price seems to directly contradict your statement.

I said it's factual because of the article below....and I got tired/cranky because of one now blocked poster moving the goalposts with every post. I have no issues with Gary Nylund - good poster, even though we did disagree here. Marleau wants to win, and this article makes is pretty clear.

Marleau’s checkered playoff history provides a cautionary tale for young Maple Leafs

-------------------------------

“It’s an accomplishment to get there,” Marleau said. “But you want to win it all obviously. We fell short a few times after getting to the conference final, but to finally get there it was good to give yourself that one extra chance to finally win.”

That was part of the reason why he came to Toronto. He’s not here to be a mentor. He came here to get a Stanley Cup.

“You could hear it in his voice, the motivation that he has to win,” Rielly said. “It’s really cool.”

----------------------------------

That's very kind of you, thanks. It's always nice when people can disagree and stay civil.

Makes sense if Leafs win a Cup this year he either retires or goes back to San Jose to give it another try with them. Leafs strike a deal with Sharks and Leafs get cap relief and Sharks get a good player on the cheap for 1 year and if things not looking like another Cup run he retires mid season. The Leafs have lots of $$$ so it is really about cap management. This is only way left Leafs can use their $$$ to buy cap relief. If Leafs dont win Cup this year then he makes his last run next season.

It was 30.8 in cap space and Horton is 5.3. I rounded up, then decided to change it.

Anyway, we have space for everyone. If you want to demonstrate otherwise, I'm all ears.
the leafs have 30.9 million dollars of cap next season with 12 players needed to fill our a full roster. the big 3 have yet to sign their extensions and the longer they wait the more they will get. they will get around 25 million combined and that will leave the leafs with 5.9 million dollars of cap with 9 players needed to fill out the team. with horton placed on ltir that will give the leafs an additional 5.3 million dollars of cap space. in total, that's now 11.2 million for 9 players. if there is a cap increase, it will be marginal at best, which won't help out the leafs that much either.

Yeah, sounds like it all fits to me. All our top talent is locked up and we can fill the bottom of the roster with, well, bottom-of-the-roster type players making bottom-of-the-roster money. We don't need room to pay fourth liner 3 million dollars like we always have.

Well, it is 30.9 million plus the 3 to 4 million cap increase plus the 5.3 million for Horton being on LTIR. So it's probably $40 million. Let's play fair here, and be real.

Might want to take your “facts” with a dose of history. It is a fact that contracts have outs, so it is a fact that not every contract must be taken at face value.

If you want to say it’s fact that Marleau wants to win a cup, then I’ll tell you it’s fact that he doesn’t want to play a season of hockey for $1.25m.

No one is saying that Marleau doesn’t have control of his destiny. But what people are saying is that both Marleau and the Leafs have already agreed that it’s best for both sides of he doesn’t play the final year.
aren't the Leafs on the hook for his cap hit whether he plays in his final year or not?

The Leafs are on the hook. But what he was saying is that Marleau may want to only play 2 years of that contract, and then once his third year bonus is paid.....whatever happens with him or his contract, happens - like a trade of his contract to a team that doesn't need the cap room. Farfetched? Probably. Impossible? Who is to say.

yeah sounds pretty far fetched, especially if you look at the other contracts/acquisitions Lou made this year and in the past for the Leafs. he likes bringing in old guys

SJ might want him back next year when Thornton retires. They are as much contenders as the Leafs now.

Yeah, but definitely on the downside. San Jose gave up all their depth and youth in this trade, while the Leafs kept all theirs and just used cap space.

Yes. Being a age 35 plus signing, the Leafs are whoever holds his rights on the hook for a 6.25m cap hit in each of his final two years. If he retires, he's an easy trade. But Marleau is 99% not retiring. He's playing well and wants one last change at a Cup. His NMC makes almost ensures he stays a Leafs for his Cup run.
This going back to San Jose seems so far fetched. San Jose has at least much cap problems as the Leafs....and more if Karlsson resigns as a Shark

He would get traded to the sens or yotes'. Melnyk can smell that contract from 300 miles away. Sens will need to reach the cap floor after stone and duchene and stone leave.

The sharks didn't give up all their depth and youth in that trade. That's an asinine comment. They gave up a small amount of depth and youth. Tierney is only 1 depth guy and demelo wasn't even going to be an every game player. They are deep at center so they can withstand trading chris. Balcers and norris are good prospects but San jose still has some good prospects in the pipeline.

we can only use that LTIR space if we are above the cap or if a leaf player suffers a long term injury. it isn't just cap space that can be used at any time.

I think unless his play goes off a cliff there is a decent chance he plays out the last season. Why would he want to leave a contender?

Has Marleau's NMC have no meaning? In what world does he agree to traded to a bottom feeder? Sorry Leafs fans, you just can't wish away Marleau's cap hit.

You mean like Datsyuk, Hossa, Phaneuf, Kessel, Clarkson and many other's with NMCs never waived their no trade clauses? Amazing planet you live on where the NHL looks completely different. Fact is many players do, for various reasons, to all sorts of teams good or bad. Who knows, maybe Marleau even decides to agree to go back to SJ next year since they'll likely to have just as much chance of winning a cup as the Leafs now that SJ is even more of an attractive option to go back home to, what with them now having traded for Karlsson.

very rarely have players waived their nmc and there's little reason to suggest marleau would. he moved his family across the continent to play for a coach he loves and to try and win the cup. there's a little chance he waives his nmc to go back to san jose. another thing to add is that the sharks can't afford karlsson and take on marleau's contract at the same time.

They could trade him back to SJ, LA or Ducks and retain half his salary. No way the Sharks dont jump at the chance for Marleau @ 3,125,000 on his last season.

The Ducks, Kings and Sharks have cap issues too. And the fact is Marleau has a NMC, so again it's Leaf fan fantasy that "They could trade back to SJ, LA or Ducks." Ducks don't appear to contenders, and Anaheim/LA isn't home. Half retention doesn't help the Leafs that much cap wise. Leafs would have 3.125m in retention and still have fill his LW position which costs cap.

Any internal replacement would be max 4.135 mil (Grunstrom, Engvall, Korshkove etc.) so, a 2 mil savings. Not a huge amount, I agree, but not nothing either.
