Markov helped Montreal have a top pp for a few years.

He got players paid.

I think people will choose Gonchar because he was such a beast offensively, but I can't recall him helping player get paid.

Both are great defenders. Markov would be more impressive if he didn't miss almost 2 seasons.

Always wished Markov would shoot more. He had a wicked shot, but always went for the pass it seemed

Hmmm... I would have said peak Markov beat peak Gonchar, but that’s just going from memory. If I recall there was a time when Markov was unanimously considered a top 5 defenseman in the league, I don’t recall Gonchar being considered as such.

Considered by who? Not the writers who vote for the Norris Trophy. Markov peaked at 6th in Norris voting - doing so in both 2007-08 and 2008-09, and wasn't a factor in voting in other seasons.

Gonchar? 4th in Norris voting in 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2007-08. 5th in 1999-00. 6th in 2000-01. 7th in 2006-07.

Can't say I have seen enough of Gonchar to be unbiased - and Markov's career got hampered badly by injuries.

But, Markov was a great defenseman, Montreal's D never looked bad with him as a #1.

Good enough, thanks for the information. My comment was certainly indecisive, it was just what I recalled from years ago. I was also more basing it on the general vibe that I recalled in only forums I belonged to at the time rather than Norris voting. The Norris voting list can be a bit skewed towards offense only, I think we’re seeing a heavy emphasis on that this year as well.

I've always had a soft spot for Markov for some reason...but the better answer here is clearly Gonchar. He just did more, even if a lot of it was weirdly under the radar.

gotta go with Markov.. he's the better 2 way player and I value that more over Gonchar's play style. On top of that Gonchar could be very frustrating at times... always good for a big gaff or just flat out quitting on a play.
