I haven't watched Johnny hockey enough to make an informed opinion on him. How's his two way game compared to Stone? To me Stone is already one of the best in the league on the defensive side.

He is good defensively, he gets criticized the same way Karlsson does. Small and offensively gifted, people assume he's bad without watching him.

I don't think anyone is saying he's bad. It's just that Stone is really really REALLY good.

What? I was replying to someone who asked hoe Gaudreau was defensively, I never answered his question comparing the two.

I think Stone is better, but it isn't a weakness in Gaudreau's game

I was thinking the same thing about Stone ... give it to him.. its his third year playing pro hockey ... its Johnny's first .... I can see another eastern bias coming favoring Stone ... just like when Iggy lost the Hart trophy to Theodore ... doesn't matter, at the end of the day Johnny is the better player ....

Iginla and Theodore both had phenomenal seasons, but Theodore made the playoffs and Iginla didn't. Can you find me a professional sports league anywhere that hands out MVP trophies to players who don't make the playoffs? ... No. That's not bias, that's just reality. :teach2:

There is no way I or any sane GM would trade Johnny for Stone .....

Really? You don't think that there are a boatload of sane GM's betting against the career longevity of a 5'9, 150 lb player in an extremely physical sport? :skeptic:

Its Stones third year , Johnny's first ... this will be as close as Stone ever gets to Johnny ...

It's his first year. The AHL isn't the NHL. Or you want to start debating Gaudreau's college hockey experience against AHL aged players?

If Stone wins , I guarantee that looking back on this in 5 years people will say "How the Hell did that happen ???" ....

You have a time machine!!!

I admire your loyalty for your teams player. But do you not see the arrogance in the comments. No way I will say stone will be better in 5 years and players development has no relevance to age. Some just take longer to find their game. Perticularly larger players. Time will tell. Either way I'm rooting for a great story with flames in playoffs.

If Gadreau wins the Calder over Stone the world makes no sense. Stone has more goals, the same points, better +/-, leads the league in takeaways, is a big part of the PK, and scored clutch goals in the Sens' biggest games in the season.

I wish more people knew about Klingberg

I've said it many times, 5 guys deserve to win the calder this season.

Mark Stone
Filip Forsberg
Aaron Ekblad
Johnny Gaudreau
John Klingberg

IMO Klingberg has been just as good as Ekblad on a team with less structure and has produced more (although Dallas is way better offensively than Florida). What Ekblad and Klingberg have done with their respective teams is nothing short of amazing.

Personally, I think Stone should win it because he's been just as dominant defensively than offensively. League leader in takeaways(not for rookies only, for all players), leader in rookie +/-, Tied 1rst in points, plays PK, plays PP, leader in GWG for rookies. I mean everything is pointing out for him to win IMO.

I wouldn't be mad if he didn't win because as I said before, any of those 5 players deserve it. In the end it's just a trophy but these players are all very very good and that's what important.

Now that is just wrong.

Look, it's obviously you really like Johnny, and that's fine. He's a great little player. But to suggest that Stone is some sort of flash in the pan? I really have to question your hockey knowledge.

This is an exceptional Calder year, and a number of guys could win it.

All I know is, if Stone isn't in the top 3, the voters are either idiots or insane.

There may be an emotional argument to make for a forward other than Stone but there isn't a statistical argument to make. For the past few weeks we've heard about Gaudreau leading the rookie scoring race. Stone ended up with that lead and his stats across the board are simply better. Stats are stats. They are what they are. If you go down the path of an emotional argument, Johnny has the nick name and maybe there are a lot of sports writers that will vote that way because of the nick name and because of the failure of that football fellow......Johnny what's his name.

That said, I think it is a lot harder to compare D man and forwards. Ekblad has had an incredible year for an 18 year old and being 18 as opposed to 20 something does seem to matter.

If Stone is behind Gaudreau or Forsberg in voting, that just won't strike me as just. If he is behind Ekblad , and to a lesser extent Klingberg, I can live with that

Don't know why people get so hung up on who's going to win which trophies. Is it nice to see your team's player get validation for their season? Sure. But the Calder voting is not going to make any player better or worse. It will have no affect on their career and is therefore fairly insignificant. Count me in the "who gives a **** who wins" category.

He should be the first rookie in NHL history to win the Selke.

Lol not even close.

He'll get some votes, Palat finished 11th last year with 9 votes and I'd think Stone will end up with more votes than that with the hype he's receiving. It's one of those awards that you have to build up your reputation before you're truly considered since it's not statistically based. You spend a couple of years playing well at both ends, people take notice, and then if you score enough points, your name will be in the running.

Good luck, its pretty much an award reserved for centres these days. Ask Hossa.

Stone doesnt actually deserve it imo, theres a lot more to defense than takeaways and some guys are just better than him, but he's been getting enough hype that a top 10 selke finish is far from unlikely, imo.

Or Jere Lehtinen oh wait no he won it 3 times.

The irony is you're talking about Hossa a player that has played more games with the Ottawa Senators than any organization in the NHL.

I noticed I had Forsberg's total SH TOI in place of SH TOI/G, fixed that here.
