So...is he playing injured, does he have poor cardio, getting played too much (I think that’s part of it), has he turned into a goal suck or has Maurice been telling him he is similar to Yzerman privately and his head won’t fit through the door now?

I'll go with a combination of bolds.

What else should he be doing? Cleaning the ice during timeouts?

He could start by cleaning the clock of an enemy puck carrier. Then the next enemy who touches the puck near him, chase him down like he wants to eat his brains, or at least cares a little bit. Then skate the puck full speed to the other net, elbowing enemy stooges aside left and right. Then do the same on all subsequent shifts, scoring occasionally. If he wants to be better than McDavid and Crosby, he better come up with something like that.

I am not going to criticize Scheifele too hard, he has had his rough games like any other player but he is not the problem with that line.

Wheeler is slumping a bit and his bad habits in the d zone are rubbing off on Scheifele. They’ll get over it when games start mattering again, but they should be split up for now because that line really isn’t that good atm.

Scheifel and Wheeler are both guilty of cheating early in the D zone. They get burned a LOT. On top of that, they stay on the ice too long and end up gliding a LOT (see OT winning goal yesterday).

That's true, but much of his play last night and a few other nights of late, mainly in the D zone, had nothing to do with 26 or 81.

If Schief would give a dam about his play in his own zone the numbers might be better buts he’s been very soft for a couple of months.

Schief hasn't been great in both ends of the ice for sometime now, offensively he doesn't seem to dominate like he did the past couple seasons, not much improvement at all in Schief game this season.

He is having a better season offensively than the last two seasons. I won't argue with the defensive part, but he's surpassing the point and per-game totals from the previous two seasons.

Schief got most his points in the first half of the season, if he was on pace with what he's done in the second half his numbers would be way down! You have to admit his play has been lackadaisical since the new year!?

I already admitted that his defensive game isn't as solid as in previous years - he's cheating for offensive though, not playing in a lackadaisical fashion, IMO.

His PPG and S% are at career highs, I'm actually surprised, why do you guys insist on letting facts get in the way of my arguments!:madfire:

I can’t believe I’ve missed this post. Well done sir!

Schiefele is being keyed on more and more.
Other teams believe Jets offense goes through him.
Hayes will help.

And splitting him and Wheeler will help also.
Each one can carry a line.

Hope he gets to 90 points

IMO Scheifele as a student of the game learned more than any other Jet going through last years playoff run what it takes to win a cup. He also has close connections to some of the top players in the league through the association to Gary Roberts and has no doubt had many long discussions. Again IMO he is pacing himself. Not that he isn't trying hard, but rather he isn't risking himself in high danger situations. Come playoffs I think we see a beast mode Scheifele that carries the team.

I'm less worried about the points and more worried about the way he has been playing.

Do NHL players get mono or is that just a junior thing?

Scheifele is still around 15 th in scoring in the entire NHL. All players could through small slumps, but I wouldn't be worried about Scheifele. I've noticed in the last couple of games, he's picked up his game, and he has Wheeler to motivate him.

Laine is making both of them pick up their games.

He had a rough February scoring wise, but 2019 isn't as bad as you make it out to be:

Note too: you're comparing 39 games worth of scoring to 28 games worth of scoring. The whole team was having difficulty putting the puck in the net as well, both 5v5 and on the PP. The dip probably looks pretty similar for the rest of the team as well.

Not too worried, myself.

Well I'm worried, Hayes to 1C, Little back to 2C with Schief on the wing!?:sarcasm:

Other seasons it was this time of year when Schief really caught on fire! He doesn't seem to have the same jump or urgency in his game since the new year!

in other words in other words you're telling us that since the new year he is almost a point-per-game and before the new year he was about .8 points per game? It looks to me like he has picked his game up since the new year!

That's true, but much of his play last night and a few other nights of late, mainly in the D zone, had nothing to do with 26 or 81.

His play in the neutral and offensive zones has me somewhat puzzled as well, both with the puck and without. Many are content to simply say that he sometimes "floats" too much but it goes much deeper than that. He now seems reluctant to hold on to the puck and to allow plays to develop naturally, and instead he makes quick, even hurried touch passes to others. We see this when he makes a possession entry coming across the blueline, where he almost always cuts up short looking for a pass and is reluctant to drive the net himself.. We also see this when he is part of a cycle along the boards after his line gains possession deeper.Sometimes he rids himself of the puck so quickly that he unnecessarily puts the person he is passing to in a high pressure, vulnerable position. He also nearly always breaks off from any boardwork/cycle work from the get go and moves to position himself in a soft area for a potential passout.

In my humble opinion, Scheifele has clearly changed his game over the last 2 seasons . He wants to minimize physical contact, and sees himself far more as a "finisher" on his line ,and not a driver of the play. He can of course be elite at that role but the lines performance will hinge greatly on how his two wingers play. I suspect Maurice has noted this and has concluded that he MUST keep a line-driver like Wheeler on his wing if the Jets are to have a top line at all.

Schiefele is fine
Everybody (best d line) is on him.

He will get more abuse in the playoff .

Good thing Jets can abuse the opposition more when they have a full line up.
