I tried to put in some surprise picks because there will always be some. Enjoy!

chi38.gif
1. Chicago – LW Patrick Kane London (OHL)

Tallon likes Turris in this spot too, but in the end he goes for the spectacular Kane who should be closer to the NHL than Turris.

phi38.gif
2. Philadelphia – C Kyle Turris Burnaby (BCHL)

The Flyers are ecstatic to land the talented Turris. He needs to bulk up and may be several years away as a result, but he's got the chance to be such a complete player who will produce a lot.

phx38.gif
3. Phoenix – LW James van Riemsdyk NTDP-18 (USA)

The Yotes spend time debating Voracek or van Riemsdyk. In the end, they go for JvR's upside and Rick Nash like tools over the ''safer'' Voracek. Mueller and JvR, a nice duo up front!

l.a38.gif
4. Los Angeles – D Karl Alzner Calgary (WHL)

Dean Lombardi has said he wants either a young center or a young d-man to pair with JJ. With Turris gone, he grabs the stay at home d-man Alzner who will look great with JJ.

wsh38.gif
5. Washington – RW Jakub Voracek Halifax (QMJHL)

A lot of people see Cherepanov going here, but I don’t. The Caps are a perfect spot for the playmaking Voracek with the two 2 snipping Alex's on LW.

edm38.gif
6. Edmonton – C Sam Gagner London (OHL)

They have said they won’t pick Cherepanov at 6. So they pick Gagner, a perfect Oiler IMO. Gagner could be a bigger Andy McDonald & there’s nothing wrong with that!

cmb38.gif
7. Columbus – C Angelo Esposito Quebec (QMJHL)

In what seems like an annual rite of summer, the CBJ use a pick between 5 and 10 on a skilled forward. Esposito is a boom or bust and they hope he booms.

bos38.gif
8. Boston – C Zach Hamill Everett (WHL)

Perhaps a bit of a surprise, but the Bruins are getting an excellent offensive player who is already strong defensively with the selection of Hamill.

stl38.gif
9. St. Louis – LW/C Lars Eller Frolunda (SuperElite)

Shocker, but remember T.J. Oshie? The Blues have shown they will take a risk with Jarmo K running the draft. Eller could turn out to be a top player out of this draft. And Eller is Jarmo's type of player.

fla38.gif
10. Florida – RW Alexei Cherepanov Omsk (RSL)

At some point, you HAVE to take the Cherry risk. Florida does. They have been starving for goals for a long time in FLA, how can they not pick him?

car38.gif
11. Carolina – Ryan McDonagh Cretin-Derham (USHS)

Carolina's elated to land this all-around high school defenceman at 11. He may take a couple of years, but McDonagh has seemingly all the tools to make it big in the NHL.

mon38.gif
12. Montreal – Logan Couture Ottawa (OHL)

The Habs are glad to pick up Couture at 12. He's a complete hard working center with good hands, excellent smarts and a big heart. Skating is a question mark, but it was for Latendresse too.

13. Toronto – C Mikael Backlund Vasteras (SEL)

The Leafs, who were praying for Couture, take a bit of a gamble with the very skilled Backlund, who Dreger says they like.

col38.gif
14. Colorado – D Kevin Shattenkirk NTDP-18 (USA)

The Avalanche are very pleased to pick up the skilled American defenceman. Shats isn't very big but he's smart, mobile and very talented offensively.

edm38.gif

) 15. Edmonton – D Keaton Ellerby Kamloops (WHL)

The Oilers can't believe their good fortune as Keaton Ellerby is available at 15. They quickly snatch him up, despite hockey sense concerns.

) 16. Anaheim – LW Max Pacioretty Sioux City (USHL)

Max Pac is exactly the type of player the Ducks like. Big, strong, talented and a good skater. Hits hard. Not a great goal scorer but still has good skills.

nyr38.gif
17. New York Rangers – LW Simon Hjalmarsson Frolunda Jr (SuperElit)

The Rangers have a lot of solid forward prospects but no one who really screams star. They take Hjal hoping he becomes another Alfie with his skill, work ethic & all-around game.

cgy38.gif
18. Calgary Flames – C Colton Gillies Saskatoon (WHL)

Everyone expects them to take Sutter, but they got for another WHL kid with the massive smooth skating Gillies. They hope he can improve offensively.

min38.gif
19. Minnesota Wild – D Nick Petrecki Omaha (UHSL)

They wanted McDonagh badly. They settle for the bone crushing Petrecki, who is also very mobile. For a team loaded with skill, they see him bringing some snarl in the future.

pit38.gif
20. Pittsburgh Penguins – LW Bill Sweatt Colorado College (WCHA)

The Penguins really need to beef up their wings and picking the very fast Sweatt is a good start. At worse, he’s a great 3rd liner, at best he’s Sid’s or Malkin’s LW for 10 years.

phx38.gif

) 21. Phoenix – RW David Perron Lewiston (QMJHL)

The Coyotes, who need goals and more goals, go for a wildcard in the highly skilled spectacular Perron after picking up JvR.

) 22. Montreal - D Thomas Hickey Seattle (WHL)

The Habs add a potential powerplay quaterback to their growing d-man prospect pool. Hickey’s under 6’ feet tall but he has a lot of talent, is mobile and a great passer. Couture and Hickey so far!

nsh38.gif
23. Nashville – RW/C Oscar Moller Chilliwack (WHL)

Nashville is happy to select the smallish but skilled and very competitive Moller. He will help replenish the forward prospect ranks.

stl38.gif
(From
atl38.gif
) 24 St. Louis – LW Brett MacLean Oshawa (OHL)

The Blues, with their 2nd pick out of 3 in the first round 1, add the very solid Brett MacLean to the stable. Big, good along the boards, blessed with good hands and smart.

van38.gif
25 Vancouver – RW Michal Repik Vancouver (WHL)

The ‘Nucks grab the talented Repik who is playing in their backyard. A skilled player with a nose for the net and a complete game. Could be a gem.

stl38.gif
(From
n.j38.gif
) 26 St. Louis – D Jonathon Blum Vancouver (WHL)

After snagging two talented forwards, the Blues grab d-man Blum. He won’t be counted to lead the Blues blueline in the future (that will be EJ) & that will suit Blum just fine.

det38.gif
27 Detroit – LW Maxim Mayorov Leninogorsk (RSL)

Never scared to gamble on a highly skilled European, the Wings grab the talented but sometimes enigmatic Mayorov. Steal potential for sure.

wsh38.gif
(From
buf38.gif
) 28 Washington – C Brandon Sutter Red Deer (WHL)

The Caps can’t believe Sutter is still around here. He will be a solid role player on what should be a loaded forward core in the future.

ott38.gif
29 Ottawa – C Logan MacMillan Halifax (QMJHL)

A nice project. MacMillan has good size, good speed, nice hands and smarts. Must be more consistent.

) 30. Edmonton C Patrick White Tri-City (USHL)

White has very good potential and is a worthy gamble. Very good hands, sniper type skills & a nice frame. Good gamble by the Oilers after the Gagner and Ellerby picks.
