Is it possible Bergevin has to do some of the whacky moves and French-related things because of ownership?

ive liked what he's done more than Benning. Drafting isnt usually the GM

also why cant I vote?

Voted Benning, because even tho we have a "good" team now, we sucked a lot, for a long time.

Wasn't Benning hired after the 2013-14 season?

Marc Bergevin is probably one of the best GMs in the league, some incredible trades and signings, great asset management. What has not helped him is that the Habs have been very bad at drafting for a long period. But now with at least 1 hit from 2018 and a lotto pick still developping.

Benning is actually a good GM. This place has always been wrong on him. He took over in a dire situation and couldn't deal his best assets to help the rebuild. Yet, Vancouver stands in excellent shape for the next 10 years, as a result of his drafting and developing. I won't argue that he has made some bad signings. That is why he is good and not great.

Yes but it’s important to note the Canucks were bad for that long before Benning came along, teams are typically bad in cycles and they were accumulating higher draft picks and should’ve rebounded by then. Benning prolonged it

Rebuilds are hard and don't always work. Many teams rebuild their rebuilds. Benning took a 100 point team, stripped it down, and got them to game 7 of the 2nd round in 5 years. That is better than most rebuilds in the NHL. He has made his mistakes no doubt, some of them we are pating for now, but he has got much better every year. Benning has set the Canucks up for a pretty bright future, not sure why he gets so much hate on these boards. I'd argue he has been one of the best GM's in the league at drafting and trades the past few years.

Hard to believe that Bergevin has been Habs GM for 9 years. That's a lifetime in the NHL these days

Marc Bergevin had Karl Alzner and to a lesser extent Andrew Shaw.

Jim Benning had Loui Eriksson, Brandon Sutter, Jay Beagle, Sven Baertschi, Antoine Roussel and to a lesser extent Tyler Myers and Jordie Benn.

The big difference is that his team drafted Pettersson, Horvat and Hughes versus Suzuki (acquired via trade a year after his draft), KK and Romanov for the Habs.

Who's done a better job with their team? I'll take this in a bigger picture way. While his tenure has been rife with mistakes; I voted Benning.

Benning took on a team that had the declining old core of the Twins, Bieksa, Hamhuis, Kesler that had spectacularly fallen off a cliff. And in fairly quick order (relative to how long it takes some teams) has built an entirely new young core that's already had some playoff success & is one of the most promising young groups in the league. And he did it without a top 3 pick.

To go from Henrik, Kesler to Pettersson, Horvat in 3-4 years is pretty good.

Exactly. Sedins would have returned some decent assets but trading them was unrealistic.

Hell
Jim Benning is allocating nearly 30 million of his cap to the press box, AHL, his 4th line and Tyler Myers.

How anyone can say this guy is a “good GM” is astonishing. Drafting is largely handled by scouts, the fact people still don’t grasp that is just insane.

There’s also a lot of smoke in Vancouver media that Benning pushed for Cody Glass while the scouts pushed for Elias Pettersson. I-Mac a Benning shill essentially said the last pick Benning overruled his staff was in 2016 for Oli f***ing Juolevi which may be the worse pick in franchise history.

It's not like MB took over gold either though. He had PK, Patches, and Price for sure but overall he a an overachieving team and a mandate to go for gold.

And he did a good job turning PK/Patches into Weber/Suzuki. It wasn't as complete an overhaul but he's made some good moves.

Both guys have had some gaffes aswell.

Bergy finally started to turn the corner after Dudley left. I'd say he got to the right direction last off-season.

Montreal is the better team moving forward.
Based on what, exactly? Vancouver has one of the best young cores in the NHL and is set at all of the main positions, while most of Montreal's biggest difference-makers (Price, Weber, Petry, etc.) are on the wrong side of 30. Wait...

Oh, yeah... I see.
