At one point, this was a promising team. Looking at the projecting lineup next season, this is a team that might not even make the playoffs. Their refusal to move any big salary in the flat cap has backfired and is mind boggling. They lack any high end prospects with Sandin and Robertson likely on the roster and with 3 picks this year and 3 next year, that won't change.

Utter and complete failure by Shanahan and the rest of the front office turning a promising group into a top heavy roster with AHL depth.

I think they make the playoffs but are one and done again.

Too unbalanced to really do much in the playoffs.

Losing both Bogo and Hyman won't make the team better and there was not enough cap space to pick up decent free agents. We don't know what's Dubas' plan but he'd eventually have to part ways with one of Nylander or Marner to improve the team.

They lost Hyman but upgraded the goaltending. Apparently this means they're going to miss the playoffs lmao.

Bunting is not a bad player. Is he Hyman? No. But he is actually a pretty effective forecheck + net-front player.

From Toronto standpoint I believe keeping the same core intact and going through the rough patch is the move to do. Bunch of championship teams had to keep pushing before having success in the playoffs.

TB could have blowed everything up after their 1st round loss , Washington were a bunch of chokers until they were not , SJ made it to the SCF after holding on to a core that was labeled as hopeless.

They got a good team with many elite elements , in the playoffs you need your elite players to catch fire at the right time , bit of luck involved.

At least they have players with the talent to actually go on a roll and take over games. Marner generated a bunch of chances against habs but because Hyman couldnt finish he is seen as a playoff choker. Matthews played good also but Price played really good.

As a habs fan I hope they dismantle stuff and do something stupid like firing Dubas

The window closed the minute they signed John Tavares. They didn’t need to spend that much cap on another forward when they already had Mathews, Marner and Nylander getting ready to come off entry level contracts. Very predictable they’d be bleeding depth every year after that.

It made sense at the time to chase Stamkos when he hit free agency but the circumstances of the team had changed a couple years later when Tavares became available. It’s scary to think what may have happened had they kept Lou for a few more years. He wouldn’t have made the mistakes Dubas did.

What the f*** does garland have to do with anything?

People are doom and glooming like this is a basement team. When in fact they've upgraded the goaltending, lost Hyman but added a useful (and cheap player), and will comfortably make the playoffs.

If I were them, I'd bite the bullet and move Tavares in a "losing trade" and take the short term hit in order to create longer term flexibility and be a potentially better team in two years. They got three year years before Matthews can just pack it up and leave. Destination 2024 should be the goal.

As it is, Dubas is behaving as though they just got varianced out of the postseason and he has a Cup contender on his hands, but when the team as constructed has never won a single postseason series, that line of reasoning is a bit dicey. This isn't like Tampa making multiple deep runs before getting shockingly swept a couple years ago.

They were 9th in the season that had normal divisions. They beat up on a mostly paddycake division last season as we didn't see how well they would have proven themselves against better competition. They arguably got worse this offseason, we'll see what happens. Nothing would shock me too much as far as where they finish in the standings.
