Interesting to see where he plays. You have to figure it's another AHL job maybe as the starting role right? You wouldn't sign this to have him play in the NHL as a backup with Sparks playing the majority of the games.

I wouldn't mind seeing Sparks getting the backup role and Pickard #1 with the Marlies but still lots to happen.

Signing doesnt mean he staying for sure but we should've all seen this coming. One of Sparks, Curtis or Pickard wont be back. Now if you take into consideration the chemistry of Sparks and Picks...and Dubas would well be aware of this...one could say Curtis goes in a trade. He had a career season last year so well high..to a team to needs goaltending and has a RHD or center we like (hoping for JT but know it's a long shot)

like the signing

was really impressed with pickard when he filled in for the Avs as their full time starter a couple of years ago

let him and sparks battle it out and trade mcbackup - he's coming off a great year, so might as well get something for curtis now

then a trade request it should have been

Taking a guaranteed 800k is smarter than gambling that another team MIGHT make a similar offer.

He can always potentially end up on the trade market at a later date if it looks like he can’t make the Leafs.

Signing a contract now is a much smarter professional move for him than causing a scene by refusing to sign with his team, especially since he’s hardly a blue chip asset with no actual leverage

So all 3 possible backups are signed? I would guess all 3 would be available for trade. Whoever gets the best return will probably go. Maybe even 2 of them because they would all need to pass through waivers. I'm sure they wouldn't want to lose any of them for nothing. All would be suitable backups to Andersen.

leafs actually are supposed to qualify @ 10% raise in pay so it should of been $1.1M, so he is either happy being 4th choice goalie or one of sparks/McElhinney is gone

Actually, if the actual salary for the last season of the expiring deal is $1M or more, the QO doesn't add a %, it just has to at least match the salary. Pickard was making $1.075M for 17-18, so his QO would've had to been at least that much.

He had a $1M dollar contract so the Leafs needed to give him $1M or more to qualify him as an RFA, he actually took a paycut to stay here.

Not if there's a strong chance of him going back to the AHL...

Qualifying Offer Calculator - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

The qualifying offer must be a One-Way offer if the following three requirements are met (A goaltender is considered to have played a game if they are on the bench as a backup for this scenario):
  1. The player played in 180 NHL games in the previous three seasons (Prorating for the shortened 2012-13 season: 156 games if one of the three seasons is 2012-13).
  2. The player played in 60 NHL games in the previous season (36 if the previous season is 2012-13).
  3. The player did not clear waivers in the previous season.
Since Pickard didn't meet any of those, his QO from the Leafs could've been a 2-way where only his NHL salary had to meet the QO amount. The amount to play in the AHL could've been much lower.

The Sabres need to claim Pickard or Sparks, rather take Pickard. One of them is getting traded or claimed.

There is no doubt Sparks had a better season than Pickard in 2017-18. (Though Pickard’s year was good also). But if you consider the whole pro career of each of them, Pickard probably still comes out ahead. When you are evaluating a goalie and asking which is the better predictor for performance in the following year, a key component in determining salary for that year, do you consider only the previous season or the entire career?

That’s a real question, not just a rhetorical one. What is a better predictor for goalies, career performance or the previous season?

Seems like 2 of 3 of M/S/P will get dealt before the start of the season. All are waiver eligible, none make big money for a backup, making them claimable.

Last year, seemed Sparks/Mac got two-years to make them tougher waiver claims. Not the case for Pickard.

As mentioned, it sure seems 1 or likely 2 goalies will be traded, with the remaining backing up Andersen and Kaskisuo starting for the Marlies. Would be happy to add a 4th and 5th round pick or used in a package for a D.

surprised he extended. was thinking he'd look for an nhl opportunity
He would have to clear waivers before being sent to the AHL would he not, so NHL looks like a real possibility. I say we keep him over Sparks as he is a better NHL skilled goalie. Not sold on Sparks at all as a NHL goalie.

I've never seen a back-up be as supportive to a starter as I saw with Pickard this year. Even with a bit of a 'fall from grace' in terms of status. Seems like a great guy to have around in the event they move goalies around.

Andersen Mcelhinney Sparks Pickard.

Leafs have options going into the season for a back up goalie. It does not need to be complicated.

No reason to guess which one will be better in September/October. Keep them all and see who puts in the work over the summer.

I don't really understand why people are surprised we re-sign an RFA, 90% of RFA's get re-signed the other 9% go to Europe on there own and like 1% of them don't recieve QO's. yes those are random percentages for effect. it doesn't signal anything. all 3 goalie's imo will be in camp as they have limited value trade wise and there's no reason to not re-sign these guys as RFA's. they may move 1 after camp or lose 1 via waivers but they wont be moving them before camp. as for why Pickard takes the deal, his QO would have been a two way deal, so he would make 800k next year now weather he plays for the Leafs or Marlies. his QO would have significantly lower AHL salary since it would be a two-way deal. and since he's most likely to be in the minors it makes sense.

With you.

At this point with our Goalies (and could be said for other fringe RFAs) you're better off having the security of letting them battle in camp, and have to trade/risk losing them on waivers vs trading them for a 6th/7th or conditional pick way before you see how your whole offseason plays out.
