After a very slow start (3 assists in 12 games), Evgeny Malkin finally broke out of his slump! The way he was playing he was going to start scoring.

In his last 2 games, he recorded 3 goals and 2 assists for Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

    His totals so far :

    2004-2005 : 19 GP, 4 G, 6 A, 10 Pts.

    (2003-2004 : 32 GP, 3 G, 9 A, 12 Pts.)

If you want a comparison, Petr Sykora has 5 goals and 3 assists in 13 games with Magnitogorsk, and Senators prospect Alexei Kaigorodov has 14 points in 20 games.

Glad someone posted about it, because I was going to.

After dominating the Romazan cup, Malkin was fairly cold to start the season. He had 2 points in his first 11 games but has 8 points in his last 8 games.

Great news. I was getting concerned with his lack of production, but the way you put it makes me feel like he was playing great, even if he wasn't getting the points. Now the points are coming to him. 3G 2A in 2 GP. Wonderful news.

Couple that with Ovechkin's linemates and his stats... bah... not trying to stir anything up.

Well Malkin did start the year with Kudermetov and Karpov. Not house-hold names, but they were 1 and 2 in team scoring last season.

Can't wait to see Malking and AO battle it out in the playoffs five years from now. Both are gonna be great players. :yo:

    Not in North America.

I had to look up what his first name was...he only has 2 goals and 2 assists in 19 games so far...ouch.

He's having a bad year right now it seems, mostly produces in the second half of the season which makes him not get too many chances on the national team. Last year he played a couple of the tournaments for Team Russia though and did it rather well.

On a non-lockout season I'd call him top-5 among veteran forwards in the RSL.

Interesting, now the question is can he put all his talent togethor and translate it to the North American game?

Considering he's almost a full year younger than Ovechkin his stats look similar to Ovechkins of last year. Maybe the gap between these two is smaller than I thought?

Maybe he's not a household name, but to any fan who's been following hockey for a while (even in N.A.), Karpov's name should ring a bell.
Played for a while with Anaheim in the mid 90's and was a mainstay for numerous Russian WC teams throughout the 90's.

In his prime he was a pretty decent player.

Okay. And his popularity should be comparable to Afinogenov and Chubarov?
