In what’s become an annual tradition, you can keep tabs on your players vying for and making rosters out of training camp here.

For the Blue Jackets, while there are more than 30 young Jackets prospects currently at NHL camps here at the start of the pre-season, these are the guys we expect to have a shot at starting the season in the NHL — or being among their teams’ first call-ups through the season:

(***presumed/confirmed roster spot)
  • ***L/RW Kaapo Kakko (NYR)
  • ***C Sam Steel (ANA)
  • LW Nikolai Prokhorkin (LAK)
  • LW Jakub Lauko (BOS)
  • C Morgan Frost (PHI)
  • C Morgan Geekie (CAR)
  • C/RW Nick Suzuki (MTL)
  • LD Ty Smith (NJD)
  • LD Jacob Bryson (BUF)
  • RD Dante Fabbro (NSH)
  • RD Jett Woo (VAN)
  • RD Mitch Reinke (STL)
How ‘bout you guys? Who are you hoping will impress enough to make the jump?

Update: Coyotes didn't really have any positive surprises outside of 19 year old defenseman Jared McIssac still with the Detroit Red Wings.

POS NAME NHL TEAM
3 LD Jared McIssac Detroit Red Wings
28 LW Michael Dal Colle New York Islanders
73 FWD Brandon Pirri Vegas Golden Knights

Coyotes have 59 players still in NHL Camps. Here's the 32 non-vets we think have a chance of making their teams

Whoa!

The Flames probably only have two pure prospects with shots at the NHL to start the season. There is a third who's making noise but he's such a long shot that I doubt it.

Beyond that, there are some shiny new UDFA's who are guaranteed to make it (Gusev) or close (Kaski) and a few others that might surprise.

Ryan Poehling - MTL - Most likely candidate to start in the NHL because he can play a bottom six role while developing.

Alex Alexeyev - WSH - He may be ready but I hope they take it slow and steady with him.

Jake McGrew - SJS - The Flames 7th rounder is making waves in San Jose. He was consistantly the best player in the rookie camp games. Even though the original thinking may have been to start him in the WHL as an overager (he previously missed an entire season) there seems to be some noise that he's competing for a NHL job. If he's ahead of schedule but not quite NHL ready he could turn pro in the AHL.

From completely out of left field, and still in camp, perhaps Mikhail Maltsev (NJD) or Cameron Hughes (BOS) could surprise.

The Flames have a whole bunch of 1st/2nd year pro's who were mid- and late- round draft picks who are real long shots to ever play in the NHL. Two names though: Nick Caamano (DAL) impressed last night in Dallas' opening pre-season game and Brandon Hagel (CHI) was a standout in rookie camp.

The new UDFA list is much longer: Gusev (NJD), Kaski (DET), Kuffner (DET), Davies (NSH), and Bear (EDM).

Will be nice to see if some of last years UDFA's can become regulars: Eric Robinson (CBJ) and Juuso Riikola (PIT) in particular.

Here's a look at some Tampa prospects and their adventures in camp...

Graeme Clarke & Nikita Okhotyuk were in Devils camp up until yesterday when they were returned to their OHL team. Brandon Gignac & Colton White remain in camp with the Devils but will likely be headed to the AHL soon enough.

Cody Glass might be the only true prospect to have a shot at some NHL games this year. He finished last season in the AHL strong and has been getting good reviews so far in camp, skating with Max Pac in games. I'll be happy if he spends the full season in the AHL to help him build up a bit more strength to handle the pro game.

Evan Fitzpatrick is still with the Blues but will be headed to the AHL.

Canadiens fans are extremely high on Josh Brook, who has shown well so far in camp. Seems unlikely he will be returned to the WHL for another season and may get some NHL action this year.

My distant cousin Liam Kirk broke camp with the Coyotes but has been returned to the OHL. Hoping for an improved season from him with a year in NA under his belt.

Luka Burzan & Trent Minor have also been returned to their respective WHL teams.

This years 1st round pick, Matthew Robertson, made it through the first round of cuts with the Rangers. There's next to no shot he makes the team but it's good to see him getting some extra time with the pros.

Maxim Cajkovic picked up an assist in his first pre-season game for Tampa and has received some praise for his play in camp. After an iffy QMJHL debut last year my expectations are a big jump in production. After a decent rookie season in the AHL Taylor Raddysh is getting a good look in camp. Chances are it's AHL for him again but Tampa may need his ELC at some point so maybe he gets a few games this year.

Tyler Benson continues to look good after a great AHL season last year. I'm hoping for another half season in the AHL before he gets a few late season games with the Oilers.

UDFA Anton Wedin has played well in Chicago's camp. Here's hoping he can carve out some sort of role in the NHL.

UDFA Jani Hakanpaa apparently got roasted in his first pre-season game...so there's nowhere to go but up!!

On a very sad note, Erik Foley failed his physical and will not participate in camp again this year. And this is after missing all of last season with concussion issues. Seems as though his career is in real jeopardy, hopefully he can at least recover enough to live a healthy life.

For the Canucks, working on the assumption that Robert Thomas, Troy Terry and Alexandar Georgiev are all full time NHLers at this point and won't be sent down again.

Otherwise, quite a few players are still around:

- Henri Jokiharju and Conor Timmins are both likely to make the team after great camps. Jokiharju has done well with progressively greater responsibility, while Timmins has been the Avs' best player in pre-season according to many. That Timmins has been this good after not playing for 18 months is nothing short of remarkable.

- Sami Niku is almost guaranteed a spot in Winniepg at this point, and with Myers, Trouba and maybe Byfuglien gone, there's a lot of ice time up for grabs. Reviews of his play so far have been very good, but the same was true last September.

- One if not both of Evan Bouchard and Joel Persson will likely stick in Edmonton, with Persson having played enough with Klefbom to suggest he probably has the better chance. Bouchard could start in the AHL but should be up quickly, and looks quicker than last year.

- Will Borgen and Dominik Masin have had good pre-seasons and could compete for the final cut on their teams. Buffalo has a few injuries so Borgen could crack the club along with Jokiharju, while Masin was playing on a pairing with Erik Cernak the other day. Masin is waiver eligible which is a factor.

- Andrew Peeke has been very good, with his skating helping him stand-out. He will play eventually, but with seven one-way deals in Columbus, seems unlikely he can break camp without some injuries.

- The defenceman who has come out of nowhere to push for a spot is John Marino, who is way closer to being NHL ready than expected and has shone consistently through rookie camp and the pre-season. He may start in the AHL but he will be up soon. Jake Walman, by contrast, was much more hyped but has struggled as a pro, although he's still in camp with St. Louis.

- Adam Gaudette is in a numbers game to make the Canucks, who have cornered the market on bottom six forwards, but with three goals in his past two games he is making his case, although whether he has the skating and defensive ability to stick in a depth role is unclear. Zack MacEwen came into camp with a shot but hasn't done enough it seems.

- Both John Quenneville and Phillip Kurashev are in the mix for spots in Chicago, although injuries have hindered both. Quenneville could get picked up on waivers if he doesn't make the cut, while Kurashev is probably off to the AHL, although it's been a great off-season and pre-season for him so far.

- Joel L'Esperance came into camp with a good shot at making Dallas, but hasn't stood out, although there's still time. Similar story for Zach Senyshyn who has looked fine but hasn't separated himself.

- Daniil Yurtaikin has had intriguing flashes, showing the skating and hands that give him upside. There are spots available in San Jose, but sense remains he could use some more development time.

- Tristan Jarry and Marcus Hogberg are both third stringers at this stage, although Hogberg is waiver ineligible and will eventually get a shot at replacing Craig Anderson in Ottawa. Jarry has been very good so far, but he needs a new organization at this point unless Casey DeSmith really blows it.

And a few top prospects have already been cut:

- Phillip Tomasino scored a goal and was sent down the next day. That's ok, he's just turned 18.

- Josh Norris and Alex Formenton were both sent down last night after so-so pre-seasons. There are a lot of young forwards competing for spots in Ottawa and not surprising they're behind those with pro experience.

- Boris Katchouk, Dennis Yan and Jimmy Huntington all got preseason games with Tampa but never had a real chance at a spot and have been sent down.

- Although less a top prospect, Alexandre Alain was very good in rookie camp but was sent down to Laval last night, as was Lukas Vejdemo.

Vegas still has 16 prospects in NHL camps currently. I think that there are a couple locks amongst this group to make their respective NHL clubs. As my club continues to build up from expansion it's good to see some of my draft picks and prospects acquired from trades starting to pan out and potentially make the jump to the show.

Barrett Hayton, Arizona Coyotes
Rasmus Kupari, Los Angeles Kings
Joel Farabee, Philadelphia Flyers
Ville Heinola, Winnipeg Jets
Owen Tippett, Florida Panthers
Adam Fox, New York Rangers
Nic Hague, Vegas Golden Knights
Maxime Comtois, Anaheim Ducks
Shane Bowers, Colorado Avalanche
Jacob Larsson, Anaheim Ducks
Julien Gauthier, Carolina Hurricanes
Rudolfs Blacers, Ottawa Senators
Jesper Sellgren, Carolina Hurricanes
Joe Hicketts, Detroit Red Wings
Michael McLeod, New Jersey Devils
Dmytro Timashov, Toronto Maple Leafs

For the Wings

Joesph Veleno remains at camp, sounding like he may get a look maybe the 9 game deal before they decide what they are going to do with him.

Klim Kostin my god, after years of mediocre play offensively. He has just been on total fire in preseason. Perhaps this is his break out, and he becomes what i hoped he was going to be? Looks like he is taking Maroons spot as a big body who can score in the Blues line up for now.

Jack Hughes has been as advertised, projected to be playing top line with Hall. Hes been fire in preseason excited to see his future.

Kiefer Sherwood looks to have brokem camp again. Will once again be a bottom 6 guy.

Jayce Hawyluk another bottom 6 role player who will hold the roster spot again.

Rasmus Andersson will once again play all up an down the Flames defense. With Chucky signing under the flames cap hit there is a belief no trades are in coming anymore to free up a spot for Andy in the top 4 full time.

Teddy Bleaugur another bottom 6 role player who appears to have cracked a cash strapped team. Can always use warm bodies though improving.

Luke Kunin at this point it is all about health. He has proven he can be a good middle six forward. He just needs to stay healthy and continue to produce.

Yegor Rykov still at camp, but the Rangers have soooooo many defenders left. Some higher touted like Fox, that i think hes sent down to learn the NA game more.

Lots of later cuts, guys like Pierre Oliver Joesph, Jake Oettinger, Ty Lewis, Ben Gleason future is starting to brighten up

Is there an easy resource to find every team's current camp roster? Or is everyone looking at each team's transactions list?

This turned out to be easier than I thought. Here is my list of players that played in any non-NHL league last year, and are still in training camp this year:

Korbinian Holzer
Karson Kuhlman
Zach Whitecloud
Martin Necas

Update for the Flames:

Still in camp: Gusev (NJD), Lizotte (LAK), Kaski & Kuffner (DET) Bunnaman (PHI), Kaspick (STL) , Hughes (BOS), Riikola (PIT) and Bear (EDM).

Gardner & Caamano (DAL) just sent down today but both had strong camps. Hagel, Maltsev, Robinson and Alexeyev were all sent down. McGrew was sent back to junior for his overage year and Dillon Hamaliuk (SJS) started his junior season off with a bang with 4 points in his first game, including a last second winner.

I think Gusev, Riikola and now Bear are locks. Lizotte, I would be surprised if they sent him down. Kaspick and Hughes may only be up because of injuries - both have not participated much but both are also back skating. Bunnaman would be a surprise but he did have a strong rookie year and can play a 4th line role.

The biggest question mark remains Poehling (MTL) - he's supposed to be back from concussion tomorrow - who knows if that has wrecked his chances at making the team out of camp.

Development camps 2019 - Jackets update

Made it:

ANA
Sam Steel
- Steel missed a few games in pre-season with a leg injury, but it’s supposed to be nothing serious. Ryan Kesler being scratched for the season opened the door wide for Steel to start the season in a scoring role as the Ducks’ second unit, centring Rakell and Silfverberg - which is potentially a pretty exciting line for the rebuilding team.

NYR
Kaapo Kakko
- the arrival of Kakko, Vitali Kravtsov and Artemi Panarin has remade the Rangers’ forward lines overnight. While they still lack depth, having these players greatly increases their firepower up front. Kakko dominated at the summer prospects tournament, and is adjusting to NHL ice and new line mates Kravtsov and Mika Zibanejad. A conservative low-water estimate for his rookie campaign stands at 20/30/50 - we’ll see if he can exceed those marks.

NAS
Dante Fabbro
- Has lived up to his rep as a thoughtful player who exhibits good decision-making and takes care of his own end first. The Preds’ move of Subban was made in part because they were confident of Fabbro’s ability to step right into a top-four spot. He’ll start the season paired with Matthias Ekholm, which is a great insurance policy for a kid.

MTL
Nick Suzuki
- If there was any lingering doubt about whether Suzuki had earned a pro debut, he likely erased it with his slick OT winner on Saturday. In truth, Suzuki showed his versatility throughout the pre-season, sliding over to the wing and straight into a scoring role on the Habs’ second line with Lekhonen and Domi, with whom he showed good chemistry - so much so he bumped Jonathan Drouin to the third line (and potentially onto the trade market). At this point, thanks in part to the speed and strength he added in workouts this summer, his starting role seems all but assured. The real question may be how Suzuki handles the grind of the pro game, but his long 18/19 season that featured an OHL Championship, Memorial Cup and World Juniors suggests he has a chance to keep up with the play well into spring.

Late Cuts:
CAR
Morgan Geekie
- played hard throughout camp, and while he play top-line minutes of the AHL Charlotte Checkers after being a force for them last spring, his versatility should make him an easy call-up option for any forward vacancies that open up through Carolina’s season.

PHI
Morgan Frost
- an untimely groin strain limited Frost to two preseason games, pushing him from near-certain lock to make it with the injury to Nolan Patrick, to getting sent down to Lehigh Valley to start the season. He showed flashes of his dynamic offensive talent in his abbreviated audition and has Flyers fans and management alike pretty excited, but they want him playing in top-six role, so he’ll get the opportunity to do that in the AHL. It shouldn’t take long for him to earn a call-up or two once he’s fully recovered.

BOS
Jakub Lauko
- speedy sniper showed impressive speed and hands on ore-season, lasting far longer in camp than expected for his first pro exposure. Was sent down in the final week to get an AHL season under his belt, but he definitely seems to be on the Bruins’ radar as a potential top-six contributor in the future.

LAK
Nikolai Prokhorkin
- last group of cuts, sounds like he’s committed to proving himself in North America, so we’ll see how he adjusts to the speed and smaller ice.

STL
Mitch Reinke
- sent down in final round of cuts after being brought back up for closing weekend depth, Reinke showed fine puck skills and two-way play, and will likely be on the NHL/AHL shuttle several times this season as injuries demand.

All in all a pretty rewarding rookie class for the HFNHL Blue Jackets, as the seeds planted during this gruelling rebuild begin to sprout.

I guess this is the final list. Kravtsov was a bit of a surprise cut (along with Chytil for NYR)

Update for the Canucks:

Made the Cut (for now)

- Troy Terry: Perhaps not the lock I assumed, as he was only so-so in the pre-season, but will still start with Getzlaf.

- Adam Gaudette: Outstanding camp and forced the Canucks to cut some of their fat in the bottom six.

- Danil Yurtaikin: The skating and puckhandling seems to have translated to the NHL and he'll likely start as a middle six winger in San Jose.

- Sami Niku: Banged up in camp but will start in Winnipeg and could get top four minutes and PP time as long as Byfuglien is gone.

- Conor Timmins: After not playing for almost 18 months, was perhaps the best Avs player in the pre-season. Too good to send down.

- Henri Jokiharju: Not a great camp, but has made it anyway. Could be on the NHL/AHL shuttle with a glut of blueliners in Buffalo.

- John Marino: Came out of nowhere to force his way onto the Penguins as a first year pro. Rutherford has confirmed he'll start in Pittsburgh, whether JJ is dumped or not.

- Joel Persson: Was looking good with Klefbom on the second pair until an injury. Should be back in the line-up upon his return.

- Andrew Peeke: Still in Columbus, the coaches are raving about him, but may end up the final cut considering numbers and waiver ineligibility.

- Alexandar Georgiev: Like Terry, wasn't quite a lock but would have had to really lose a job. The question is between he and Shesterkin, who is the future.

- Tristan Jarry: Fantastic camp and won the back-up job from DeSmith, although money a factor.

On the Bus

- Phillip Kurashev: Good camp, scored in his final pre-season game and will see games this year. But he's not even 20 yet and will start in the AHL.

- John Quenneville: Injuries didn't help, but for a fourth year pro competing for a job on a team with spots available, he didn't do anywhere near enough.

- Zack MacEwen: He's close but would have required a Gaudette-like performance to make it, and he definitely wasn't that good.

- Joel L'Esperance: A late cut but an underwhelming camp. Will be curious to see if the goal scoring continues this year.

- Zach Senyshyn: Got some games in and played on the PK but didn't do enough to earn a spot.

- Evan Bouchard: Played well, looked quicker, but appears Holland's plan was always for him to start in the AHL.

- Will Borgen: Sent down yesterday, like Jokiharju he is caught up in a numbers game but looks like he has an NHL future.

- Jake Walman: Actually had a better run than expected, but really needs a huge year to get his development on track.

- Dominik Masin: Had a good camp but increasingly looks like a AAAA-type, similar to Quenneville.

- Marcus Hogberg: He was always going to be the third stringer, but should see time and has a one-way deal next year.

Need more Time

- Oula Palve: For an older European import, didn't come close to making the Penguins.

- Boris Katchouk, Josh Norris, Alex Formenton: Got in some games but sent down early and could use some more development time.

- Tobias Geisser: Very big and very mobile, but still a couple years away.

Here it is the final list of players to make their respective opening day NHL rosters. With 7 total players officially making it, it's nice to see that our patience is beginning to pay off as we build the expansion Knights. Two big surprises here for us are Ville Heinola and Dmytro Timashov. In Heinola we were excited to be able to draft him 23rd over all this past summer in the entry draft. I never would have expected him to play in NHL right away even with all that has happened to the Winnipeg defence, I thought for sure he'd be back in Europe to start the year. Timashov was a guy I acquired in a trade with Brock, where I gave him a late pick for 3-4 prospects. I thought maybe one day Timashov would get a NHL shot, but I never would have expected it to come this year with the Leafs.

Barrett Hayton, Arizona Coyotes
Ville Heinola, Winnipeg Jets
Adam Fox, New York Rangers
Maxime Comtois, Anaheim Ducks
Jacob Larsson, Anaheim Ducks
Dmytro Timashov, Toronto Maple Leafs
Ilya Mikheyev, Toronto Maple Leafs

Joel Farabee, Philadelphia Flyers although not officially on the Flyers opening roster, there is word that he could potentially be recalled on time for the Flyers first actual game this year on Friday. Two other players that were sent down the the AHL yesterday that could be recalled sooner rather than later are Nic Hague who was reportedly given Shea Theodore old locker after the morning skate as Theodore moved lockers. The other is Julien Gauthier who had a really strong camp and many expected him to crack the opening day roster for the Hurricanes. My best guess for Farabee and Hague getting sent down is do to cap space and other players needing to clear waivers.

For the Blues, Batherson and Bemstrom made it. Abramov, Chekovich, Verroneau, Jaros, Laggesson, Mikey Anderson, and Harpur were all notable late cuts. I had 10 D in the NHL last year, so with Jaros, Harpur, Anderson and Lagesson cut, I'm down to 5 NHL D right now, and was is likely ice fishing somewhere up north (but thankfully not retired). Might need some help on D next year.
