Speculation: Make up of the Oilers roster 20/21--what might it look like?

Line in theory of players clicked correctly--I emphasis in theory

Line 1 AA-McDavid-Neal (which may or may not work)
Line 2 Nuge-Leaon--Yamamoto (we know that works
L3- Khaira-Haas- Chaisson/Kassian I think Khaira and Chaisson are the ones we could up grade with other players
L4 Archibald-Sheahan-Ennis(resigns) --I like this line mostly because we can move Ennis up and down the line easily--we know he clicks with McDavid as well

Wild Cards to upset the cart or plan: Tyler Benson if he is healthy will get a long look this fall and will be the first recall when injuries happen, Ryan Mcleod, while he could use another full year on the farm, I think he will be ready by early next year if not sooner(by all reports I have read he has progressed nicely on the farm). Anton Slepyshev the biggest wild card, could fit perfectly on the 3rd line or slide up to the 2nd line. As for Raphael Lavoie, I do not see him jumping straight from the Q to the NHL and think he needs atleast one year if not more on the farm

the fun starts

Dp1--Klefbom and Larsson--love em or hate them--when healthy and on their game they are very good pairing who can play the minutes
DP2; Nurse and Benning or the joint whipping boys. I know I am not the only who noticed that when Benning became injured or played injured the oilers struggled, While not fancy he gets the job done
DP3 - Bear and Jones While it maybe a year too early to put them together I think that is what the future holds for them
Extra Russell--while his cap hit is 4 mill he has a signing bonus on July 5th(I think) and his physical pay will be 1.5

Wild Cards--Mike Green at 34 and injury prone he could be a good number 7 to ease the pressure off of Jones and Bear playing together and see PP time. I can see use for him if the Oilers move Russell and if he signs for say 1 to 1.5 a year. Evan Bouchard maybe a year away from full time NHL play and may need to spend 1/2 year on the farm still. Philip Broberg will spend next year in Sweden and that is a good thing

Then comes Goalies.
I am not a big fun of either Smith or Koskinen as starters and I think the oilers will be looking for another goalie. Smith is a UFA. Will one of Wells, Skinner or Rodrigue be ready is the question

How do you guys see the line ups coming together

Here's my prediction for opening night lineup next season.

Hall-Mcdavid-Kassian
RNH-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
AA-D.Strome-Kassian
Nygard-Sheahan-Archibald

Klefbom-Larsson
Nurse-Bear
Jones-Bouchard

Koskinen
Smith

This is assuming that 2019/20 season is cancelled. A compliance buyout is used on Neal. Russel is traded or bought out. JP is traded in a package for D.Strome. Hall signs a 1 year, discounted deal with the lower cap amount.

it will also be interesting to see who from the farm is shown the street or leaves

Obviously Manning and Granlund wont be back and hopefully Keegan Lowe is not given another contract (he keeps getting a contract that counts towards the 50 max contract and I just do not see why)

I keep forgetting about Nygard

Goaltending:

We have no prospect knocking on the nhl door even as a backup currently. I like Koskinen and think he could have gotten more games this year over Smith. The team seems to play noticeably better with Smith for some reason.

Griese would be my #1 pick to help solidify net. Halak another good choice. Expensive but I don't dislike going after Lehner either. Mike Smith is the least favorite but he may have one year left...

Koskinen
???

Defense:

Trade Russell to free up cap space. Avoid Green. Bring up Bouchard to start the year as long as he has a good camp. Experience and youth on every pairing with at least one puck mover each as well.

Klefbom Bouchard
Nurse Bear
Jones Larsson
Laggesson Benning

Forwards:

Keep DRY line together. Sign Sheahan to help solidify our weak center position. Move AA to center since we have an abundance of wingers/no centers. I've put Puljujarvi in with McDavid to boost his value to trade asap. Hopefully for a quality player.

RNH Draisaitl Yamamoto
Neal McDavid Puljujarvi
Slepy AA Kassian
Ennis Sheahan Archibald
Chaison Haas Nygard
Kharia

Doubt Ennis signs cheap enough probably stuck with Kharia there. Not sure if Haas sticks. But even without them our forward group has potential. Prioritize getting someone with chemistry for McDavid. Get a true third line center and it's a good group. Benson and McLeod waiting in the minors, hopefully with big years for the Condors.

With the likes of Halak, Khudobin and Lehner hitting free agency, I would really hope that we don't circle back to a 38 year old Mike Smith out of convenience.

I would like to try AA at 3C if he doesn't nab the 1LW spot. Sheehan really did well as a PK specialist and that would be a great 4th line. But of course AA would have to be better than he was here to be a great 3C option, but I actually have faith in him. Ditching him would be like what we did with Strome.

This! But I wouldn't worry too much. Holland could re-sign Smith any time, but doesn't want to. I imagine we'll throw caution to the wind and gamble at FA

Can AA play C? I know he is listed as being able to play all 3 FWD positions but has he played much there?

I haven't watched him a ton, but the articles and sources I looked at when we got him said that he did.

But my worry there is that AA is mostly a winger, and that his work at center might have something to do with Detroit being bad and trying different things.

I didn't see passing as a strength for AA so that's another worry.

Given the philosophy of Coach and GM and the cap situation—-
1) Benson and Bouchard only make roster if camp injuries occur
2) No way KRussell or Neal are on the roster if the cap flattens or goes down
I believe camp starts like this:
Ennis-McDavid-Kassian
Shepylev-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
Athanasiou-RNH-Chiasson
Khaira-Sheahan-Archibald
Nygard-Haas

Nurse-Bear
Klefbom-Larsson
Jones-Benning
*******
Koskinen
*******
If other roster players are acquired more will not be signed or traded

Am I not correct Slepyshev’s biggest success was with Drai and Lucic in the playoffs. Did he play LW in the Khl? Maybe move Yamo to McDavid line or RNH to 3rd line and reunite him with Drai

I can't recall Slepyshev having any sort of extended success. He had a couple good games here and there, but nothing warranting specific linemates.

I think Slepyshev takes Khaira's spot. With all the trade rumors around Khaira, it seems like Holland has wanted to move him all season long

yup, i didn't get the feeling that Holland was a big fan of Khaira ! if Slepy comes, Khaira likely goes. and Nygard was re-signed so you'd think he's in the mix somewhere? and contrary to popular belief, i think Benson is very much going to get a serious look if training camps open up again in September !

AA/RNH - McD - Kassian
RNH/AA - Drai - Yama
Ennis - UFA/Trade - Neal
Slepyshev - Sheahan - Archie
Nygard/Haas

Slepy probably getting some looks on different lines
Benson could stick and find a regular spot in the lineup.

Long shots: Neal gets complianced, Puljujarvi returns, Mcleod takes 4C spot.

Klef - Lars
Nurse - Bear
Jones - Green

If Bouchard looks strong in camp then he takes over the 3RD spot and Green becomes 7. If he's underwhelming start him in Bako and sign a cheap ufa to sit in the press box.

Koskinen
Smith

Think they bring Smith back on another 1 year deal. Tip likes him, they like what he brings in the room.

No Hall please. We can't afford another superstar player. I'd prefer to spread that cash around the lineup to improve our depth.

For some reasons I have a feeling Hall will be a Flames next season..

Anyway

Benson - McDavid - Kassian
RNH - Draisailt - Yamamoto
AA - Sheahan - Archie
Ennis - Khaira - Chiasson
Nygard

Nurse - Bear
Klefbom - Bouchard
Jones - Larsson
Benning

Koskinen
UFA Backup

Resign Ennis 2 x 1.5M
Resign Sheahan 1 x 1M
Neal gets compliance buyout.

If Russell,Neal and Chiasson are gone we can afford a 1LW upgrade over AA
