Seems to me that Yvan was slightly more of a scorer than set-up man.

If Bratt ends up like him or even approaching him, he'd end up being viewed as the best pick of the 2016 draft by far.

Yes a great finisher but I’d have to go back and check who his centers were. The pocket Rocket, Peter Mahovlich, Jean Beliveau and our own Jacques Lemaire among others were with him over the period I seem to remember.

But Bratt has a great shot. I love his slapshot and actually wish he’d look for it more.

Really, though, it’s more his style of skating that recalls Cournoyer for me. How Bratt uses his speed to get everyone turned around and moving in one direction, whereupon his instinct is to cut back against the grain, or to circle back and find open space while everyone else is still going the other way. In fact I really don’t think he’s quite learned fully yet how to exploit that advantage. Because it can create great opportunities for him to shoot the puck from high danger areas that he’ll maybe learn to utilize more as he matures.

There's something about Bratt's ability to see space and weave out of trouble, even in the most ridiculous tight spaces, he somehow finds a seam to exit... either safely avoiding a huge hit, or just positioning his body to protect the puck so that he doesn't lose positive control and finding...what i'd call an escape out of a tight forechecking play, or tight board play.

It's hard to explain in words, but when you see him out there its very evident to the eyes, like an escape artist (with the puck). I don't want to say its "Datsyukian", but I can't find any other closer comparisons right now.....

Maybe like a miniaturized Jagr-like ability to protect the puck, with similar shiftiness to someone like Datsyuk............?

One of my favorite moves that are unique to Bratt and only a few other skaters is when he is nearing a decision on what to do with the puck and he momentarily opens himself up and pivots to a point where the defender has no idea whither he’s going to pass it to 4 different players or take the puck himself further into the offensive zone.

There was a line in one of his Swedish scouting reports that stuck with me: "rare ability to create in traffic". I've always felt like he's an entirely unique player, his vision and creativeness are unlike anything I've ever seen on this team. Far beyond even Gomez or Elias. The only things that hold him back at this point are his mistakes and his uneven execution.

I think I've said this before, but when he's on the ice he's the only player I watch. He does something interesting almost every shift.

Bratt and Nico's extra strength this year is quite noticeable. A player like him hasn't happened before in the post cap era, not so late in the draft and so early after. I'm still in a awe a bit of how the hell he fell to the 6th round.

Getting Bratt in the 6th round had to be the universe balancing out Zacha at 6th overall

Said this last year, not banking on it, but it's again looking like a possibility. What if Bratt actually winds up better than Nico? Probably not, but it's fun to think about.

It's not a knock on Nico, as much as it's praise for Bratt really looking like he could be a superstar, although Nico certainly looks like he'll be one also.

It's pretty apparent that his lousy finish last year was due to hitting the wall.

Ya. Imagine if we had drafted Bratt #6 OA and Zacha in the 6th round. We'd be pretty damned happy with a talented top 6 winger from the 1st round, and a great shut-down center with the a possible offensive up-side out of the 6th round.

It makes sense.

If anything, Zacha should be the 6th rounder while Bratt is playing like he was selected 6th overall.

Filip Forsberg played in Allsvenskan (second tier swedish league) as well in his season leading up to the draft.

Filip Forsberg 8g9a 43gp
Jesper Bratt 8g9a 47gp

FF is a center with decent size so that raises the value of course, but it shouldnt have been #11-#162 difference. Was about same age as well.

Amazing that this kid fell to us in round 6!

If the mods want to move this to the Bratt thread I apologize and understand.

Has anyone seen enough of Boqvist to make a solid comparison of the two? From just reading about Boqvist I get the sense he’s very similar to Bratt, but I have no real frame of reference. Just wondering if Bratt’s a good comparable for what we should expect from Boqvist.

I've watched around 10 games with Boqvist this season. Hockey IQ, skill and speed is both players top 3 attributes imo so it's a decent comparable. Bratt probably have higher hockey IQ. Boqvist is a better finisher. Bratt is a better possession player and better at protecting the puck. Boqvist is more straight line, fly down the ice, zone entry guy. Making high risk/high reward plays that sometimes leads to bad turnovers. Kind of Taylor Hall-ish.

Been trying to think of a comparable to Boqvist bit it's hard, Kyle Connor is the best comparable I can think of.

All that being said, I'm just a random hockey fan so take all this with a grain of salt. European ice and north american ice is two very different games as well so the question for Boqvist is how he can handle the game when it tightens up. But he is a big impact player in the SHL. I think his style of play will suit the NHL very well.

Jesper Bratt
Grade: B

Stats: 27 GP, 3 G, 13 A, 16 P

The start of Bratt's second NHL season was delayed by a broken jaw suffered two days before the start of the campaign, and he missed 14 games as a result. Since returning, he grabbed a top-six role and has been steadily productive without lighting the world on fire.

He's currently scoring at a 49-point pace over an 82-game season, compared to the 38-point pace he finished with as a rookie. With just three goals, the Devils could use some more finishing from a player who does have a good shot when utilized.

I'm still waiting for a few big breakout games from Bratt. Would be nice to see a string of multi-point games similar to the start of 2017.

I still think Bratt needs to bulk up and improve his board work. He still gets pushed off the puck a lot, although it has been better as of late.

Still waiting? It's been a season and a quarter for him. He needs some time. Eating dinner thru a straw for a month doesn't help either.
