Our take on Päkkilä:
Eetu Päkkilä | FinnProspects.com

In our ranking of Finns in this draft Päkkilä was 14th. When I was asked to describe Päkkilä for our final ranking, I came up with this:
“Päkkilä will probably never become a star player in the pro game, but he should eventually become pretty good player nevertheless thanks to his great skating and pretty good hands. He has pretty good work ethic, but his overall game still needs some improving. He also needs to fill up his frame.”

According to a GM in the Finnish league who is a buddy of mine. When I asked him if Pakkila was good he responded with " Not bad, has good potential but is still very raw" Not much insight but I didnt want to bug him that much.

The 6-foot, 168-pound Finnish winger notched 23 goals and 17 assists for 40 points in 48 games for Karpat of Finland's junior league this past year. Fans may notice that he spent time playing with one of New Jersey's draft picks last year, Aarne Talvitie.

"Our European scouts really liked this kid. He's got a really good work ethic and his skill level and speed are what gave him a chance to be a prospect," Castron said of the 18-year-old. "He could put on some weight and get stronger while he takes his game to the next level, but we're excited to get him to New Jersey for development camp and see what he can do."

Haven't heard too much about Pakkila. Looking at his stats, it seems like he had an impressive year 38g-22a-60p in 52 games played, leading goal scorer in his league and tied for 5th in points. Hoping he's another late round diamond.

i honestly forgot this guy existed. fingers crossed on having found another gem- although my expectations are pretty low. i’m not sure what kind of competition he’s facing over there, but surely it’s lesser than the ahl/nhl. it should be interesting to see if it translates over here

did anyone post this before

Pakkila did play 1 game for Liiga in 2017-2018 so he doesn't have NCAA eligibility. I think there might be the possibility of applying anyway and getting an exception, but I really don't know how rare that is. By the way, I found the gamesheet from Pakkila's Liiga game back in 2017-2018. It was Karpat's last home game of the season (and second last game overall). Pakkila was slotted in as the top-line LW, played 14:41 minutes, and finished with a -1 and 3 shots on goal. Karpat lost 4-0.

Yeah, I read that he can petition the NCAA to be an exception. I don't know how common it is for them to accept that.

It's amazing to me how far the NCAA has come so fast. It used to be considered crap hockey, now it's one of the best development leagues you can play in.

Has it really been that fast? The NCAA has been producing NHL stars and had a reputation for a place for not just Americans but Canadians and Europeans for at least fifteen years.

I think it goes hand in hand with the rise of successful US hockey. As US players got better, more and more players came out of the NCAA, which made it a desirable destination for foreign players, which made it even stronger.

As a Swede I find it somewhat unclear how the NCAA eligibility works? It's relativity common in Sweden with "junior" contacts where the player does not get paid, mainly plays for the junior team but is eligible to play for the men's team. Would that player be ineligible to play in the NCAA? Or does it require actually being paid for playing?

Finnish juniors, nowhere near AHL, or the CHL for that matter. Solid step below the USHL I imagine. Same league Talvitie played in last year, so we have an example of a guy who transitioned successfully from that league to a higher league.
