Ayrton Martino at eliteprospects.com

Ayrton Martino has spent the last 2 years in the OJHL, but he's committed to Clarkson University (NCAA) for 20/21.

Martino's 79 points in 48 OJHL games this year is tied for the 2nd highest point total among u18 players over the last 35 years (#1 is Brandon Pirri).

Martino is a strong skating prospect that flashes a high skill level. He has a quick first step and good speed, and makes a lot of quick, subtle offensive possession plays. Needs work defensively/away from the puck but a few years in the ECAC should fix that.

Martino also played at the WJAC in December for the silver medal team, and posted 5 points in 5 games.

A nifty between the legs goal (Martino is #29 in blue):

The above goal was part of a 4-point game:

Was impressed with Martino when trying to catch some of Ryan Alexander this year. He controls the half wall really well, especially on the powerplay. Excellent vision and moves well in the offensive zone without the puck.

Selfishly hope he forgets his Clarkson commit and signs in the OHL. :sarcasm:

5 points in two preseason games with Chilliwack playing with two NHL prospects in Kienan Draper (DET) and Ethan Bowen (ANA).

Didn't notice him much last year at the WJAC. I keyed in on his game recently.

Crafty winger. Skates okay, not much of a defense player. He tends to float. With the puck, he’s very slick without being hugely dynamic. Great offensive instincts. Good shot, can pass. Mid-round pick with some scoring upside.

Seems to be on fire lately, is he rising on your draft rankings?

Slightly. I could see second round. Probably first half of the third round right now for me. The point production is good to see, but there are some risks that come with his game that I think make scoring a minimum requirement from his game.

Lancers have the 8th best record in the USHL, GD is +2 (125-123) + his team mates are not nearly as good as players what he is.
so he doesn't have lots of support there.

-----------

Interesting thing about Lancers, Dubinsky's* 2 kids play there, Karpa's 2 kids play there, Draper's kid plays there as well

*Steve Dubinsky, not Brandon Dubinsky
Steve is less known former NHL:er, he played 10 years in the NHL (Blackhawks)

Classic guy who is going to get picked much higher than his popular profile would suggest. I could see him sneaking into the tail-end of the first round.

Guaranteed when he gets picked, that team's fanbase is going to collectively go "who in the world is this" followed by wishing they would have picked some prospect they've heard of who was highly rated by a major publication like THN back in the fall but has fallen off the map for good reason. Typical draft day fan dissonance between familiar names and in-season risers who started more obscurely and don't have a CHL or recent international junior profile to raise their profile among casual observers.

EDIT: Well - just looked and almost all scouting services now has him in that 30-ish overall zone so him getting picked high should definitely not be a surprise to anybody. Still, 15 posts into a thread over a year old on a potential first rounder definitely shows his lower profile.

Drafted by the Guelph Storm in the 2018 OHL Draft, Toronto native Ayrton Martino instead opted to play for the St. Michael's Buzzers in the OJHL to maintain NCAA Eligibility. However, with the pandemic wreaking havoc on the OJHL season, he choose to play in B.C. for Chilliwack. When that season was also delayed, he went to the USHL to play for the Omaha Lancers. In 38 games Martino scored 18 goals and 56 points. He also played two playoff games but was held off the scoresheet. Martino is committed to playing for the Clarkson University Golden Knights next season.

In 2019-20, Martino put up 29 goals and 79 points in 48 games with the Buzzers. He added two goals and six points in four playoff games before the season was cut short. Martino was named to the OJHL Second All-Star Team. Martino won a silver medal at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge. He scored five points in five games for Team Canada White. In 2018-19 he put up 10 goals and 42 points in 49 games with the Buzzers. Martino also added two goals and 10 points in 11 playoff games.
