Jim Callis ranks the Jays draft 5th:

These 7 teams had the best Draft hauls

5. Blue Jays
The next three teams on our list deserve extra credit because they didn't have the benefit of any extra picks. West Virginia right-hander Alek Manoah (first) is a physical beast who can blow hitters away with a mid-90s fastball and a power slider. Florida high school right-hander Kendall Williams (second) has a deep repertoire and a very projectable 6-foot-6 frame. Toronto used its next nine selections on position players, including athletic Canadian prep outfielder Dasan Brown (third) and three collegians with intriguing power potential for their positions: Creighton outfielder Will Robertson (fourth), Virginia shortstop Tanner Morris (fifth) and Vanderbilt catcher Philip Clarke (ninth).

I too am pleased with how our draft panned out this year. I did some reading on both Manoah and Williams, these guys have potential to be top of the rotation starters (#1 or #2). The pick that really intrigues me and I think will become a steal that we speak of for a long time is Robertson that we took in 4th round. This kid is the real deal. Has potential to be a 5 tool player and only dropped in stock because of the school he attended which really isn't a baseball school. Not too many great players have made it out of Creighton, only 2 most of you may be aware of is Bob Gibson and Dave McKay. And those 2 were a long time ago. Robertson has an opportunity to become something special.

Can someone post BA's too early 2020 Mock Draft please. At least the first four picks.

1. Orioles — Emerson Hancock, RHP, Georgia
Hancock was outshined by teammate D.L. Hall in high school, but the now-Georgia ace has a good chance to beat Hall’s No. 21 selection in the 2017 draft and is one of the favorites to be the first overall pick. After a middling freshman season, Hancock broke out as a sophomore and was one of the best college pitchers in the country. He has plus stuff across the board with a fastball that’s routinely in the upper 90s, a slider, curveball and a changeup.

2. Royals — Spencer Torkelson, 1B/OF, Arizona State
Over the last two years, Torkelson has been one of the most productive hitters in college baseball and established himself as the top college hitter in the 2020 class. He hit 46 home runs in his first two years of college and last summer was one of the best hitters in the Cape Cod League. He has an abnormal profile for a top pick in the draft, but his power and hitting ability are enough to overcome his defensive limitations, much like Andrew Vaughn this year. Torkelson has exclusively been a first baseman at Arizona State, but last year on the Cape showed he could play right field.

3. Blue Jays — Pete Crow-Armstrong, OF, Harvard-Westlake HS, Studio City, Calif.
The top high school position player in the 2020 class, Crow-Armstrong seems to play the game at a different speed than everyone around him. He’s a plus-plus runner and a plus defender in center field, with an advanced approach at the plate and terrific bat-to-ball skills. He’s more of a line drive hitter now and teams will be looking to see how much impact he has in the bat, but his offensive approach is as sound as anyone in the class.

4. Marlins — Casey Martin, SS, Arkansas
Martin had a sensational freshman season as the third baseman on Arkansas’ College World Series runner-up team and followed it up with another strong year as a sophomore, while also moving to shortstop. He has a good chance to stay at the position in pro ball and brings solid power and athleticism, as well.

5. Mariners — Patrick Bailey, C, North Carolina State
Bailey has established himself as the top catcher in the 2020 class. He has solid power and plate discipline as a switch-hitter to go with a sound overall skillset behind the plate.

Excluding last year where he was horrendous Teoscar has been fairly decent defensively. This year he has a positive rating defensively.

He's slimmed down and looks better than last year but being an average corner OF defender in a small sample size after previously being one of the most brutal defenders in MLB last season shouldn't earn you a promotion to CF.

The guy simply isn't a centerfielder. His reads and routes to balls are awful. This is the most obvious thing that won't work out ever.

Callis has always been a big fan of this Jays FO's or perhaps Steve Sanders' drafts;

2017: Jays were ranked 5th
Top 5 Drafts list begins with Minnesota

2018:
Jays had the best draft with no extra picks and were ranked 2nd among their day 2 pickups
Overall: These 5 teams had the best Drafts
Day 2: These teams had the best Day 2 Draft hauls

2019: Jays were ranked 5th
These 7 teams had the best Draft hauls

He was actually considered to be a competent center fielder while coming up as a prospect in Houston. No idea what happened to his defense, but this may be a case where they think that he just isn't playing up to his ability defensively for whatever reason. A guy who was considered a passable defender in CF shouldn't move to RF and all of a sudden become a terrible fielder.

Im liking our front office the past 3 years. Many complained about their strategy. But it seems to be panning out the way they planned both in the drafts since they took over and the international signings that they have made.

Shatkins and team are going to make us a respectable organization from the lower levels and up. Its only a matter of time that the Blue Jays are contending once again with a full cupboard of prospects to boot.

This coming draft in 2020 will be the one that puts the Jays over the top. Not having drafted in the top 5 for some time and still have the prospects we have. They are definitely going to hit home runs next draft with what is looking like higher picks after a rebuild season.

I would love to know what's actually going on there because someone who needs to "push through the finish line" of an injury rehab doesn't go home to do so... he stays with the team and the large group of people paid specifically to help him get better.

It's hard to believe so many people genuinely thought the Jays were going to regret letting him go.

They probably communicated something along the lines of this and told him you will be a bench player at best. Do you still want to be on this team?

1B: Voit - 1.2 fWAR
2B: LeMahieu - 1.7 fWAR
SS: Torres - 1.5 fWAR
3B: Urshela - 1.0 fWAR
3 OF & DH: Hicks, Gardner, Judge, Stanton, Frazier

Didi coming back will play SS, Torres back to 2B, LeMahieu to 3B and Urshela on the bench. No room for Tulo

Yikes, Kloffenstein seems to have developed a violent head-whack in his delivery. Hopefully that doesn't impact his command projection.

count123: The market for closers is heating up .It seems inevitable that Jays trade Giles – do you agree? If the Jays were to trade Giles for a single prospect what FV IYO would that prospect likely need to have. 45 ? – 50 ? – more – less ????
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
2:55Craig Edwards: I think a 45 sounds about right.
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
3:11count123: If Jays traded Marcus Stroman to the Astros would he have enough value to bring back either Kyle Tucker or Yordan Alveraz ?
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
3:12Craig Edwards: Guessing not Tucker. Depends on how they value Alvarez. Stroman doesn’t fit the Astros typical pitcher profile so it would be interesting to see what they would do with him.
