Suck it up buttercup. You are paid damn well and that includes taking the heat when you aren't playing up to the contract you just signed.

Agree with you. How's this. Want out? "Retire" from the Oilers. You're a UFA. You're free to make your own deal. We'll see how willing he "to be free". If he did agree to be a UFA, good for him.

What about this?
-Lucic is buyout proof for EDM due to his signing bonus. CAR apparently wants more toughness.
-CAR sends Rask to EDM for a late round pick+Future considerations @ the draft
-EDM buys out Victor Rask (4M AAV x 4 years/25 years old) prior to June 30th, they take a cap penalty of roughly 666k for the next eight seasons.
-After July 1st (or whenever Lucic is paid his 3.5M signing bonus), Lucic waives his NTC to be sent to CAR. CAR gives EDM a late pick. EDM retains roughly 1.33M which is roughly 22.7 percent of Lucic's cap hit.
-After his bonus is paid, Lucic is owed 22.5M spread out over the next five years. EDM retaining covers almost 5M of this remaining salary, meaning CAR only owes Lucic 17.5M over the next 5 seasons, which is a real money AAV of 3.5M. CAR effectively pays Lucic a lower salary than they were paying Rask, with the only caveat being Lucic is signed 1 year longer.
-EDM walks away with roughly 2M on the books for the next five seasons, and then roughly 666k on the books for three more seasons after that. A financial obligation that is LESS than what a Lucic buyout would have been if he had no signing bonuses. In turn, EDM frees up about 4M worth of cap for the next five seasons, a significant amount considering Lucic is buyout proof and has a full NMC.

Not sure if cap circumvention, but kudos for the mental effort.

This is the kind of stuff that shouldn't be getting out.

Looch needs to shut up.. or the team needs to fix it's leaks.

The OP clearly mentions his wife, not just Milan. But yeah, making tons of money should make a players family not care about the criticism of a loved one.

His wife should realize that her husband is ripping the Oilers off with his play.

That’s not how “loved ones” works.

well wouldn't that mean that people should have enough respect to leave his wife out of it then? Lucic is a big boy and can probably handle it but when people are attacking your wife I don't blame him for wanting to leave. just because people make a lot of money to play hockey in front of millions of people doesn't mean that their personal life needs to be brought into it. fans need to be more respectful.

Like others have mentioned, a realistic Lucic trade will require one or more of the following scenarios to take place:

- significant retention
- One or more positive-value assets added to Lucic
- Oilers taking back another bad contract

It's definitely not impossible but it's also not easy. I imagine Edmonton being willing to retain but not willing to part with positive assets as a sidecar.

Very good, now I don't have to worry about him going to Montreal to reunite with Julien :thumbu:

That contract will not be easy to move and taking away Canadian teams makes it even harder.

Yeah, but the context is important. Especially Rask still qualifying for a U26 buyout. It's basically a cute way to allow EDM to do something closer (and slightly lesser) than a regular Lucic buyout if he had no signing bonuses, and for CAR to add toughness to their lineup at a reasonable salary.

Not sure if cap circumvention, but kudos for the mental effort.

The only possible cap circumvention would be completing the trade after Lucic's bonus is paid out in July. Although, there is precedent for teams getting away with making similar moves. There was speculation that Bernier being traded from TOR to ANA in 2016 after his signing bonus was paid by TOR was actually agreed upon by both teams as part of the original Andersen to TOR trade. Both sides waited presumably so TOR could eat Bernier's signing bonus without any consequences to their salary cap since signing bonuses don't have any cap consequence to the team that pays them if the player is traded afterwards.

Possibly, EDM and CAR would have to make it look like a more legitimate trade to pass the NHL smell test. EDM getting the 2nd buyout window prompted by enough of their own players taking them to arbitration would make things simpler so long as there aren't any rules against buying out a player acquired after July 1st in that second window. EDM and CAR could just do Rask for Lucic straight up, and then EDM could buyout Rask later on.

Lucic wanted the money he needs to understand that he needs to live with the consequences of the contract.

When Don Baizley was still alive he always advised his clients they would be better off leaving a little money on the table instead of trying to get every penny and then some. The fans will be less critical, the team and GM will be more apt to defend you and you have more options if things break down. Most agents today, however, just try to extract every possible dime and all to often it ends like this.

That is an easy no from the Canes. IF the Canes wanted out from Rasks contract, and that is a big if given he had shoulder surgery and may improve given he looked OK with whatever injury he had, we'd just buy him out ourselves and save a ton of money vs. getting Lucic's declining performance plus terrible contract. Now, this would change if the above scenario was changed so that it was Rask for Puljujarvi or the 10th overall prior to the draft, then Lucic after the bonus was paid.

Exactly, it might suck and his wife might want out at the moment but at the end of the day he decided, likely after talking to her, to take the huge contract and play in Edmonton. Now that things are hard you can't just pick up and run and expect Edmonton to take a hit in the process. He should maybe I don't know, come back and have a strong season and then maybe it might make moving him, if he still wants to leave, much easier?
