with injuries to Malkin and Bjugstad a trade to the pens seems reasonable

The Canucks retain half his salary and in return get a 3rd rounder in either 20 or 2021.

I don't think any team would get that desperate.

And Pittsburgh doesn't really have the cap flexibility to take on that kind of term.

I'd take Johnson back for Eriksson. I mean I'd want to waive Johnson the second he's in our possession...maybe that's why Biega was moved?

I'd do it for Johnson, retaining 1.5M on Eriksson's contract to sweeten it for Pittsburgh. Potentially more.

Buy out Johnson in 2021 or 2022, whichever makes more sense. Or immediately waive him.

I'd entertain Beagle for Johnson seeing as Pitt needs C's, but Beagle is not on Eriksson's or JJ's level of uselessness.

We are pretty set on wing.

That said, Eriksson @50% for Johnson, I would do.

It makes no sense for us to retain that much for an equally bad player. Not that I think the Penguins should be taking Eriksson on long term is a good idea to make up for two injured centers of a much higher calibre or anything.

Eriksson with 20% retention and 2021 4th round pick for Jack Johnson and 2020 2nd Id do. Helps Pittsburgh upfront too on the PK

Pittsburgh has 2 injured Centre’s. Canucks fan suggests trading them an awful winger. Seems about right

Johnson and Eriksson contracts on the same team = not contending

So, huge massive no.

Eriksson isn't going anywhere. Canucks tried all summer to move him and nothing. I'm sure they even gave his agent JP Barry, one of the big brokers the freedom to see if he could facilitate a deal and nothing. Canucks save more cap space by burying him in the A than they do buying him out. They are already paid him $27 million of his $36 million contract. He still has two $3 million Signing Bonuses due. A buyout saves them $1 million and they have to take cap hits for the front loaded portion of his contract that they have paid him and incur the hits for the SB.

There's really no way for this situation to end well.

Any team that trades for him, it comes down to whether he's going to be worth the cash that they have to pay him. At maximum retention is Eriksson worth $1.5 million per for the next 3 seasons. He's a replacement level player now, so I'm sure teams would rather have the flexibility to move off another player rather than have him. Canucks would have to eat $5 million in dead cap if they demote him to the A. Better to just retain $2-3 million in a trade? Probably.
