Benning has no concerns about signing Eriksson long term

“I knew him from before,” Jim Benning said. “Maybe with other players (a six-year deal) would have been more of a worry, but knowing him from the past, I don’t think that’s something we need to worry about moving forward.
“He’s going to help and he’s going to help our young kids in the future.”

We're not trading him without sweetening the deal.

We should just plug him down in Utica until he calls it a career.

Make my day.
Awesome! So we could reasonably expect Ottawa / Arizona to be somewhat interested.

No. The only way they would be interested is if we agreed to eat a worse contract back. Bobby Ryan would get the deal done with Ottawa, he makes way more $$$. We should not do that.

Teams like Arizona operate on a cap/$$$ ratio. Let's put that into context

Hossa $5.75m/$0.2 = 28.75. Arizona gets $28.72 in cap for every real dollar spent. 80% of his $1m was covered by insurance. *

Datsyuk $$7.5m/$0.0. Free cap.

* If you dig deeper you find they dumped Kruger (a bad contract) onto Chicago, after you adjust for that they made money taking Hossa's cap and got the cap hit. WIN WIN.

Loui would have a 18m cap/$9m cash = 2 to 1 ratio. A terrible return for their real money. Vancouver would need to eat a bigger real money $$$ for them to even be interested.

So how much do the coyotes actually pay out in their total salary in real dollars? It’s got to be way below the cap floor, right? Oh, and they’re better than us, and Jimmy sounds like a Princess with her daddy’s VISA.

The signing bonus is paid in July for $4 million. Leaving $9 million left.

But no chance a team takes him for that kind of money. Plenty of options for teams to hit the floor while spending a lot less.

Zet and Frazen in Detroit get paid $1 million per and take up over $10 million combined in cap space. Both on ltir so no roster spot to consider. Factor in that insurance probably covers it and you’re out the insurance premiums.

Luongo if Florida goes after Bob likely signals the end for him. $3.6 million in salary due with the Canucks paying 15% of that so only $3.2 million in cash.

So there are way better options for teams to hit the floor and not spend $9 million over 3 years. Can do that spending $3 million or a lot less if it’s just insurance premiums.

I believe that is also listed on capfriendly on the team site. Check the bottom summary and there is a line for salary payments. Bolland and Hossa combine for $10.8 million in cap hit but the coyotes only need to pay 20% of the $6.5 million in salary as the rest is covered by insurance. So only $1.3 of that so save $9.5 in real cash vs the cap hit.

Plus AZ already reached the floor for next year’s cap. Floor will be around $62 million.
Colorado will add Ratanens new deal and Carolina will add Ahos new deal so they will hit the floor no problem. NJ has $51 mill committed but need to sign several players. Can easily pick up a ltir contract.

Even Kesler who at $6.85 mill per for 3 years is likely a better pick up due to ltir and insurance. No roster spot required if his hip forces him to not pass a physical.

If these teams are spending so much less in real salary than ud, how come they’re way better than us?

So turns out Eriksson IS having the worst season of his career. Even worse than his rookie year ffs. Look at these stats, his worst PPG of his career was in his ROOKIE year in 2006-7 with DALLAS, he was 19pts in 59 games thats .322 PPG

Right now he has 22 pts in 72 games thats .305 PPG.

Assuming he plays ALL 9 remaining games he would need 5 pts to have a higher PPG this season than his rookie season.

This is by FAR his worse season with us even, which is pretty remarkably PATHETIC

2016-17 0.369
2017-18 0.460
2018-19 0.305

So option 4 was and IS the correct option

In case it hasn't already been said...

Highest paid player on the Canucks this year.

Highest cap hit on the Canucks this year.

But I don't think it's fair to criticize Benning as a GM for this contract.... amirite?

Someone will have to go back in time and stop Benning from singing him to a buyout proof contract then.
