So, where did Dreger get this information that there are "at least 12" teams interested in JVR? (If you answered "his agent, silly", then you get full marks).

JVR's Agent (text to "insider" Dreger): "...at least 12 teams very interested in JVR."
Dreger Tweet: "At least 12 teams in on JVR. At least 12."

Job done. Sit back and watch the clicks and retweets roll...

It gets tiring to see the media acting as shills for the agents or teams at this time of year.

All reporters are shills for someone to some extent or another. Jon Heyman is maybe the best in the business in baseball, at very least he's elite in a crowded field, and he clearly works for Scott Boras. Generally sources are based on either agents, or GMs. I think Dreger is a bit of both, and it works because you look at like, 2013 - when he shilled for the agents for Bozak/Clarkson (I forget the details, but we figured out who ever their agent is/are had a long history of favorable coverage from Dreger), and so he could basically enrich those guys while also pimping the signings as some huge coup for his boy Nonis. He also carries water for Peter Chiarelli and Bob Murray. That's probably why he's pumping Marner's tires on the radio all the time, too. It makes me doubt Tavares is coming to the Leafs, because I'd imagine his source was Pat Brisson, who's probably using it to drive the price on the Islanders last-minute.

As for JvR - he's a really good player, but not a great one. For one, the players who age well tend to be faster guys (which is why fourth liners like Dominic Moore and Jason Chimera have managed to last longer than guys like Brad Richards, with far superior primes, but less foot speed). JvR isn't fast enough to age well, and he's coming up on the point that guys like him lose a step and fall off. This really feels like an Andrew Ladd/Milan Lucic situation in the making. It's a loss for the Leafs, but they need to move on anyway. It sucks, I love him, was hoping he'd be part of the next team to win here, but uh after 50 years, you can't cry over every guy who isn't.

The second thing here is that he doesn't drive his own line. Strong goal scorer, but he's not the sort of guy who can transition the puck and be the best player on his own team when he's on the ice. Teams don't play "heavy hockey" so much anymore, but I think if you can find a situation like that, where he's not struggling to keep up with his linemates (probably a big part of what happened to Lucic w/ McDavid, and Ladd on a fairly quick Islanders team), it's ideal. Bruins aren't slow, but they're a methodical puck team like that. JvR has long been like, a low-cal Rick Nash (perfect metaphor, since Nash was a lot better than him, and also, always looked a little chunky to me). If you thought that was a good fit, maybe it makes sense. Don't know if they wanna play him as 3LW though, or move Jake DeBrusk down. Neither sounds ideal. Maybe LA to play with Kopitar/Kovalchuk if they still want another scorer. I'm sure there are other situations not immediately coming to mind, I didn't have cable this year, so I watched less of non-Leaf teams than usual.

If a team replaces him with a 19G scorer that's a loss of 18 goals which is about 3 wins (6 extra goals per win - A peek behind the curtain: how do numbers get analyzed? - I've heard 5 goals per win before) or about 6 points. Can said team lose 6pts in the standings?

In a vacuum maybe. Too many other factors go into it, specifically his baby-soft ES minutes and top PP time. His direct replacement might only score 20 goals, but will also likely be able to handle more difficult ES starts, letting us feed some of them to Matthews/Kadri instead.

Yep. He was something like 10th in even-strength ice-time per game among forwards on the Leafs last season. Pretty much a PP specialist that needs protected and limited ES minutes. You shouldn't pay that type of player at around 7M.
Sound alot like Hoffman

Didn't he score 25 even strength goals this year? How is that a PP specialist?
Offense, no matter where it comes from, is not JVR's negative. He will score....he'll do it from the dirty areas, that's not a worry. Where the fans of whichever team signs him will start pulling their hair out, is with his defense....or extreme lack there of.

Signing JvR at 7M or so is one of those things you know is not completely healthy but you still look at his remarkable consistency and ability to score, then you look at your lineup and majority of the league would say this is what we need.

So many teams are penciling in young players who still don’t have that pedigree in their top 6 which can always backfire.

Also suddenly you have more options on the PP not just in terms of lines but also set plays.

Fact is making the playoffs is tough. He’s going to help you to score more goals and at the same time 1 player isn’t going to make your team bad defensively. If he can help you get there come playoff time anything is possible.
