If you exclude Stempniak since he's on IR, our team average age right now is 24.8. That's not doing months math, just taking the years, so probably more like 25.3.

Yeah and we added Justin Williams in the offseason.

Last year, our weighted average age was 25.76 and the 2nd youngest in the NHL. The puts and takes:

16 players were on the team last year and are 1 year older.
Significant players gone: are Hainsey (36), McClement (34), Stalberg (31), Lack (29), Tennyson (27)
Significant player adds: Williams (35), Kruger (27), Jooris (27), TVR (26) Darling (28), Fleury (21),
Depending how long they stay: Kuokkanen (19), Necas (18)

Based on those stats...

I know the Oilers and the Leafs will probably be the "Celtics-Lakers" of this decade, and we are likely behind them.

But I can't help but think that Carolina and Winnipeg are going to be the tier 2 moving forward. The Oilers-Leafs storyline will be fueled by McDavid/Drai vs. Matthews/Marner/Nylander. Winnipeg and Carolina are already intertwined when it comes to commentary: seems like we are always mentioned in the same breath as being much improved and exciting but having a lot of competition in our respective divisions to get into the playoffs.

Not saying this will be a "rivalry" per se, as we won't play enough for it to develop. I just picture them being our parallel universe team. We are building through the blueline, they are building at forward. Both have had massive goaltending struggles, and have new guys that they are hoping can shore up the position.

And, given their similar average age and being at similar points in a rebuild, it will be an interesting case study to see which team has more success focusing on defense vs. forwards.

.

We need to be the Detroit Pistons to that era Lakers/Celtics. They didn't have the elite talent of a Magic Johnson or Kareem....A Larry Bird or a McHale, but they were deep and, other than maybe Isiah Thomas, no big stars. Dumars, Salley, Rodman (who was less known then), Lambeer, Mahorn, Vinny "the Microwave" Johnson, Aguirre. They thrived on defense and being a deep team.

We might actually have the youngest defense in the league.

TVR and Dahlbeck are 26
Faulk is 25
Slavin is 23
Pesce will be 23 in November
Fleury is 21
Hanifin is 20

Average of that is 23.4

If that isn't the youngest defense in the league, I'd like to know who the heck is. In fact, I'd expect the margin to be really significant.

The ones I can think of that might compete with us:

Columbus
Johnson 30
Savard 26
Murray and Harrington 24
Jones and Nutivaara 23
Werenski and Carlsson 20
Average - 23.8

Philadelphia
MacDonald 31
Gudas and Manning 27
Gostisbehere 24
Morin and Hagg 22
Sanheim 21
Provorov 20
Average - 24.3

Colorado
Johnson 29
Barberio 27
Barrie 26
Nemeth 25
Mironov 23
Zadorov, Bigras, and Lindholm 22
Boikov 21
Average - 24.1

Given the above, I have to think we're the youngest, with Columbus being the only one close. Unless I'm totally forgetting someone.

I still gotta wonder on Kuokkanen. I thought he had a really solid camp, played a good overall game, but part of me thinks he's getting this look because he had the one really solid 3pt night. The other 3 games he played he was scoreless.

Kooks just had the best camp of the bunch of forwards we have ready for a shot. He'll get a few looks then probably get sent down when Stempniak returns. Next guy up is whoever gets the best start in Charlotte.

Necas back to Czech Republic somewhere before ten games. I'm glad they're both getting rewarded but I'm not yet looking at either as staying with the team very long, unless Stempniak requires surgery.

Carolina "Bad Boys" Hurricanes, has a nice ring to it I suppose.

Edmonton can be the mid-90s Orlando Magic, or the Utah Jazz w/ Stockton and Malone.

When I played fantasy hockey, especially in the keeper league with some of you here, I pretty much never took Hurricanes. I'm not so sure that would be a safe bet anymore.

I am so ready for nhl pbp guys to be a part of my life
Cue for the opening theme of a warmhearted sitcom about vorbis, Forslund and Tripp living a house together.

The ending credits will always see the three packed real close in front of the camera to deliver to the audience a fourth wall breaking life lesson.

I took Skinner and Aho because fantasy hockey is first and foremost a way to keep me interested in the season when my attention wanes.

Same reason I took Duchene, and both Hischier and Nolan. I might not win, but I’m gonna have some interesting storylines.

I've never played in a keeper league but for single seasons I had the same rule for the outset of a season. I'd pick up Rask or Lindholm during their hot stretches though. My league has a few Canes-first types and seeing them pick guys up early in a draft always leaves me scratching my head.

I never take Canes players so I don`t get spoiled if I am not able to watch game live..

Yep, that's another factor I'd forgotten about. Back then, I watched nearly every game on DVR delay, but cut the cord around/about the same time I stopped playing fantasy.

Is Training Camp over yet? ;-)

Hey all. Just had a quick question related to your goaltending situation, and I'll bug out.

Is Darling expected to be the starter, and see the majority of games, or are you guys expecting more along the lines of a 50/50 split between him and Ward?
