Habs fans need to check out this thread.

This member has compiled draft pick data from 1998 to 2007 and ranked each team's success rate overall, by position, by individual player, 1st-round only, and he's continuing to add more information. Not surprisingly, the data shows that Montreal is at or near the top of most categories when it comes to drafting. Timmins is great, and so is our Russian scout.

Give this guy serious credit.

I asked him to add rankings for 2nd and 3d round picks. Montreal does well in the 2nd round and VERY well in the 3rd round, relative to other teams. Our success drops off dramatically after that.

Interesting to note that Tampa had terrible drafting up to 2007 before turning it around brilliantly since. Wonder how much of the scouting staff changed.

Did they really turn it around?

2008 #1 pick steven stamkos
2009 #2 pick Victor Hedman

Those probably helped boost the numbers quite a bit, and you didnt really need a good scouting dept for these picks.

2007: they got Killhorn in the 3rd (no first round pick), the rest were busts
2008: the rest were busts (Tokarski is still young as a goaltender though)
2009: they got Richard Panik (who's on the AHL bubble as is), the rest were busts
2010: Brett Connoly and Radko Gudas
2011: pretty good haul here
2012-2014: too soon to tell really. They have some good potentials picked up though

I'd say 2011 is where the scouting seemed to have changed.

Good point about Stamkos and Hedman. Tampa's been on fire since 2011 -- they picked Kucherov in the 2nd round, Paquette in the 4th round, and Palat in the frikkin 7th round!
