In former discussion there was mentioned that "centers won't grow on trees and we need lotto pick to acquire one".

Just looked for the 2018 class and:

#3 Jesperi Kotkaniemi, still struggling at MOntreal, no one knows does he pan out or not
#5 Barret Hayton, seems like a bust after his abysmal season
#13 Ty Dellandrea, entering in NHL, seems like gritty bottom6 guy
#18 Liam Foudy, not going anywhere at the moment. Winger at last season
#19 Jay O'Brien, still at college
#20 Rasmus Kupari, struggling at Kings farm system
#23 Isac Lundeström, second most NHL games and Faceoffs after Kotkaniemi, two seasons with 0.23 & 0.22 ppg level of production. Same as Rasmussen is able to do.
#30 Joe Veleno... what I saw last season and compared to others... I think he could become best of this class.

He was always a late bloomer, even when he had exceptional status in the QMJHL He always took one extra year longer than his "class" to get up to speed, but always ended up being near the top of his peers when it all evened out. Veleno could be a big steal for us for where he was picked. Even if his max is a good two-way 2nd line center, I think that's a win for us.

Unfortunately, looking at the 2017 class you get this:

#9 Michael Rasmussen
#11 Gabriel Vilardi
#12 Martin Necas
#13 Nick Suzuki
#20 Robert Thomas
#21 Filip Chytil

Hopefully Rasmussen shows more this season.

2017 is pretty damn strong class.

But, in reality, Chytil and Necas have been career-wingers so far. Robert Thomas seems the same.

My current Training camp lines:

Team RED
------------
Vrana - Larkin - Zadina (top6 line)
Berggren - Veleno - Gagner (mixed line)
Namestnikov - Stephens - Smith (defensive line)
Tyutyayev - Criscuolo - RW (Griffins line)

DeKeyser - Seider (defensive - norris)
Renouf - Stecher (defensive - puckmoving)
McIsaac - Oesterle (defensive - puckmoving) Oesterle as 8th D, but better pairings this way.

Greiss (vet starter)
Brattström (youngish backup)

Team WHITE
----------------
Fabbri - Suter - Bertuzzi (top6 line)
Hirose - Rasmussen - Raymond (mixed line)
Nielsen - Pearson - Erne (defensive line)
LW - Shine - Barber (Griffins line)

Staal - Hronek (defensive - puckmoving)
Leddy - Lindström (offensive - defensive)
Lashoff - Murphy (defensive - offensive)

Nedeljkovic (youngish starter)
Pickard (vet backup)

Quite much of new guys, all on red who haven't been more there than just short stints, like Veleno and Vrana.

Only Necas and Suzuki are really coming off good seasons though, and both have the benefit of being on good teams comparatively.

Suzuki is the best forward on that team. He makes those other guys better.
Necas defeinitely benefits from playing with Aho.

I thought that Aho played with Terravainen, and Necas played with Niederreiter?

EDIT: Here. Carolina Hurricanes Line Combinations | The Morning Puck

Maybe I am thinking of the line he played on when they played us. Looks like this was the split.

Either way, Necas is a really nice player.

Have a feeling that Yzerman is doing his DD on Dylan Strome. Would not be surprised to see us acquiring him, Debrusk, or Dvorak in a trade in the near future

I might be more tempted to try and get Kurashev.

But yeah, we should be talking to teams with a logjam at center.

I was thinking of maybe kicking the tires on Shane Bowers (COL), but his offense hasn’t developed like I hoped it would.

Im not sure we have, or are willing to give up, what it takes to get Dvorak. I thought I read they were asking for a 1st and a top prospect. I like Dvorak and think he would be a good fit, but I don’t think I pay that price. Especially not now.

Oh yeah, he's a 40 to 50 point center that's only OK defensively. I like the idea of adding him to the team but it better be for a combination of bottom 6 player, B level prospect or a 2nd or 3rd round pick. 1st rounder for Dvorak? That's just crazy talk.

These players are 21 years old. Kotkaniemi put up 8 points in 19 playoff games. Do people still not understand that players peak in their mid to late 20s? That's why the Wings are still 7-10 years away. The center that we draft next year will only be 26 in 10 years.

Yeah youre right players aren’t good enough until they are 26. Matthews Eichel Petterson Mcdavid still got some years to go before they are good
