Step 1: Do PR to appear sympathetic and optimistic about the organization

Step 2: Change nothing and sign Jan Rutta to a one way contact because he’s one of Coopers boys now

Lol. Hopefully he's only a 7th defenseman next year and we don't deal with injuries.

Signing Rutta so early may have been due to European league contracts expiring in May (it's not like they're not looking forward to July like in NA though), but it's such bad PR to re-sign a guy who got poor reviews as the first transaction after promising to evaluate things.

I think rutta can be alright if he plays the whole year and is utilized in a bottom pairing role. He wasn’t great, but I thought he was serviceable for a bottom pairing guy. Having several 1m defensemen is the new norm for us.

Rutta at 1.3 is more than fine. We don't have anyone besides Foote who we can bring in as a prospect on the right side. He needs to be used properly though as just a bottom pair guy with no special teams play. Better value to me than Girardi at 3mil was.

I echo the sentiment posted above. Making the guy a regular will have an impact on how he plays. It's not like he played any worse than some of our other DMen in "the series". I think the team needed him and it makes sense to extend that sentiment in the off season and give him a chance to be a regular. I have no idea about CAP structure or the impacts of such, but from what I understand the CAP is something like 80 million so getting a guy that was part of your playoff run (away from the memory) for 1/80th of that is probably not a bad chance to take if he has some serviceability.

The money didn't really matter on the Girardi deal though. It wasn't going to bring us cap issues. At 1.3m I'd take Girardi any day over Rutta.

He's fine as a 6/7 but boy I don't want to see him in the playoffs again. He took an absolute beating along the boards.

At 1.3 Million he could easily be depth. I just don’t have an issue with this contract given the low number.

He’s insurance for Foote not being ready.

Hopefully just a depth signing. I have no issue with him Oberging it back and forth through the 19-20 season.

Awful. He was terrible. Disappointing. Yzerman has definitely left the building.
