I don't know how they do it but The Affair's season finale that aired last evening, delivered once again.

It was longer than usual at 1h20m. It was broken down in three segments, each from the perspective of 3 characters. And it hit all the right chords.

Helen is a giant, she gets it from all sides but still stands. She's beautiful, both in and out -- and even when she loves for the wrong reasons, there is something endearing about her, but also something to admire in her. I don't want to say more, as spoiler repellency oblige.

They played this, to close the season:

The opening lyrics of the song, couldn't offer a more absolute dichotomy.

And it came to me then
That every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time

As I stared at my shoes
In the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409

"409" as I found out, is not another form of "420", but an all-purpose home and industrial cleaner.

Father time, or God, the one that is being prayed to. And then the reality of piss and 409.

I know GoodKiwi will kill me for this but ... I'm happy there is a Season 5. With the quality of writing on this show and the superb acting, there will be more magic moments to lose ourselves into.

Watched a couple movies this weekend...

MI: Fallout - 8.5/10. A little long but enjoyable. I liked it better than Rogue Nation but less than Ghost Protocol.

Deadpool 2 - 7.5/10. I thought it was ok, but preferred the first. Let’s just say X-Force was interesting.

I won't likely see it in theaters but from the ads on tv does anyone else have a problem with the changinh scale of the "protagonist" ? In some scenes it looks like it is as big as a boat, in other scenes it looks like it could EAT a boat in one gulp.

Although they had to pay jason Stathan, so considerations like this probably went to the back burner.
There were 2 sharks in the movie. One big and one small. Movie was not that good imo. Too many stupid characters. The book is a lot better. Be good everyone!

I watched The Accountant. It looked cerebral at the beginning. Thought the protagonist was going to use his expertise to uncover a massive scam.

OK, so it's a tangled web and some of the government individuals who hired him are not clean. At this point it turns into a murder spree.

But wait, there's more.

Our main character who sits on his ass all day crunching numbers is a hulking super fit specimen and not only that, is an elite sniper on his spare time.

And then he turns into a mix of Daredevil and Batman, minus the costumes but with a mastery of marshal arts and body combat.

The Batmobile is replaced by a luxury trailer home, filled to the hilt with cash and valuables. And, like the Batcave, a secret compartment that allows him to go stealth, well, like Batman.

Then he performs a one-man wrecking crew thing, the type of American BS where one guy takes out 20 bad guys who are armed to the teeth but somehow, despite having access to even more money than he does, none of them have a weapon remotely better than the contraption the accountant uses from behind a bush. Basically, a feat that Daredevil performs routinely since instead of the accountant's contraption/elongated weapon, Daredevil possesses an extraordinary sensory advantage that allows him to achieve the same end-result.

Now, I figure if I can accept all of these premises, I'm really watching 3 movies in one. I think I saved some time somewhere in there but I'm sure I missed the parts where the accountant is a stallion in bed, performs legal transactions to hide his identity, volunteers at the Y, pilots an airplane and knits sweaters. Or maybe a sequel will take care of all of these attributes.

The whole thing made me feel like an underachiever. I'm watching this from a couch at my house and then typing about it on a laptop and wondering, where the hell did I go wrong.

What a hilarious and well written review. I guess we are meant to take a leap of faith that the "Accountant" had extensive military training. You nailed it though, this is basically a super hero movie without the costumes. Affleck is basically playing the role of Superman... Clark Kent by day (even down to the dorky glasses)... able to leap tall buildings by night lol. Still enjoyed the movie though and Bernthall always plays a great bad guy.

Holy hell I’m watching The Green Mile, it is so good, gut wrenching
That’s what my son said, he read it in Grade 11 English. I cried which to me is one of the marks of a good movie

I’m still reeling from The Green Mile, it made me feel the same as Schindler’s List amazing movie but not sure my emotions can take another look. This is why I watch movies like the Pixar ones and Mamma Mia, how is Mamma Mia 2 anyone seen it?

Yep The Green Mile was great! We had a discussion earlier about which movies made us cry and The Green Mile was on my list.

https://hfboards.mandatory.com/thre...-shows-part-xix.2520569/page-7#post-148425139

The book is even better.
Isn't this the case 99.9% of the time though?

Sorry but I think Honor Blackman was the best Bond girl (still hot even now according to my husband lol), Sean Connery was the best Bond IMO and was it Quantum Solace that was Craig’s 2nd? If so I still don’t understand it. Love Judi Dench so she’s the best M.

Can’t stand Tom Cruise but do like him in MI and Jack Reacher (but I haven’t read the books so can’t comment as to whether he was well cast). I do like the Thor movies as I like movies with humour in them

I don't mind Cruise. I really think I would enjoy him more if he wasn't batshit crazy in real life. I haven't watched Jack Reacher 2 yet but will tonight. Jack Reacher had one of my all time favorite and memorable movie songs, Oblivion (Feat. Susanne Sundfør) by M83.

Edit: This song is from the movie Oblivion, not Jack Reacher.

I agree I liked Thor a lot! I love the humor in these Marvel films. If you liked Thor then you should check out Doctor Strange if you haven't already. The DC Superhero movies also have humor in them but for some reason they are just not that great!

Funny, but out of all the characters Pratt has done over the last few years, aside from Peter Quill, my favorite role of his was in Passenger. Really liked that movie even though it wasn't well recieved by critics.

I really loved Passengers! I was not expecting the movie to be that good and Pratt was great! F the critics! 9/10

Sorry for digging up a one day old conversation but back to spies... I just watched a Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit for the first time. I enjoyed it though it reminded me a lot of the prior season of Homeland. Looking forward to the Jack Ryan television series soon.

I really enjoyed Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit too. I'm on a string of good movies lately. It was nice to see Kevin Costner, I haven't seen him in awhile. Ryan felt like a bad ass yet still kept his human quality and fragility while the movie dealt with stopping a huge worldwide economic catastrophe while still being believable.

I'd compare this one to the Bourne series but I'm surprised this didn't get any sequels. Both the source material and actors were worthy of it. I see you mentioned they will be making this into a TV series. I'll be looking forward to it and hope it lives up to the movie. A similar quality to that of Homeland would be great.

I won’t hate on you... I know people, in their 40’s, dudes no less (I mention this age and sex specifically due to when the series started), who have never seen a Star Wars movie. I know one Star Wars superfan who has NEVER seen a Star Trek movie, let alone any of the TV shows.

Myself personally, I think most major movie franchises (trilogies and more) I’ve seen at least a few movies, if not all, except for those young adult movies such as Hunger Games, Maze Runner, etc. I probably would like them but just could never bother. I’ve seen the LoTR, but skipped on the Hobbit series.

That said, if you were to watch a Bond movie, Casino Royale is fairly accessible to even non-Bond fans.

Mission Impossible, for non-fans, should probably start at #4, though there are links to #3. They are all connected, but #1 and #2 are very self contained, #3 and up (I assume the latest) are all Bad Robot productions.

Curious, have you seen any of the Jason Bourne movies? I thought all three as a whole were very good. I mentioned it earlier, but while I’d classify it more as a straight up action movie, True Lies does pay homage to Bond.

I think you would enjoy those newer young adult movies like Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent etc.. especially if you are into comic books and fantasy and stuff. I believe all of them are trilogies and all based on books so I am going out on a limb here and say the books are probably better but I watched the first movie of each of these trilogies and thought they were worth it.

If you watched LoTR then there really is no reason NOT to watch The Hobbit. The LoTR franchise is the one series I was adamant about reading the books before watching the movie. I finished all four books in record breaking pace of a couple of weeks. I remember going hard on the last book and finishing it the same day the movie came out. Went out to see the movie with some friends from work later that day.

I think it was just a disappointing box office as to why there is no sequel(s). As for the TV show, I think it looks great, but I've been fooled many times by teasers.

I admit that those YA movies mentioned fall within the genre I typically enjoy. I guess I generally have so little time (took me like 5 sittings to watch Deadpool 2 just because I get busy), but everyone has told me to check those out. Come to think of it, I did watch the first Maze Runner and did like it.

The Hobbit is on my watch list. just need to find a way to free up 15 hours :sarcasm:

it better not be the " they kill the baby shark and this gets the mama shark mad" story. if it is, making it so obvious that someone with no interest in the movie notices the difference means that someone should get fired.

you would think that having statham in a movie would be the best reason to dislike a movie. this is as bad as the godzilla movie that went 9/10th of the way through the movie before you say the monster.

That his range is from vin diesel to vin diesel ? Ot that he plays the exact same character in pretty much everyone of his movies ( 90% of which involve a car )?

he's like a less exposed dwayne johnson. if you like movies where lots of things go " boom" or " vroom" he's probably a good choice.

but if you like him, you like him. fine by me.

All 3 actors you’ve mentioned I feel the same in that they generally play the same character. That said, I get their limited range so the good thing is I generally get what I pay for when I watch one of their movies. Nothing wrong with that.

Of the 3, Vin Diesel I suppose I care least about. I personally don’t find him terribly charismatic and actually kind of dull. Duane Johnson, though I still call him The Rock, has charisma and even though the situation may be absurd, he’s a lot like Arnold where his delivery and screen presence make up for it.

Statham to me is closer to VD than the Rock. I find he’s a little dull also, but he does make up for it by being flashy on screen when he fights.

Anyhow, I can’t really think of any movie between the three of them where I walked away so impressed that I had to buy the film or watch it multiple times.

Couldn't agree on Helen more. I'd give your post 10 likes if I could.

And, after season 4, I think the show still has enough steam to do one more and final season. So, I'm actually glad that's upcoming.

I liked Jack Reacher. Haven’t seen the second but it is on my list. I wonder how good it is though because I read he doesn’t run as much in it as his better flicks.

The top Tom Cruise movies, according to his pedometer, are:
  1. Mission: Impossible III – 3,212 feet
  2. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – 3,066 feet
  3. War of the Worlds – 1,752 feet
  4. Minority Report – 1,562 feet
  5. The Firm – 1,241 feet
  6. Edge of Tomorrow – 1,065 feet
  7. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – 1,051 feet
  8. The Mummy – 1,022 feet
  9. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation – 1,007 feet
  10. Vanilla Sky – 832 feet

the rock was pretty good doing the voice in Moana, planet 51 not so much.

and he is trying to expand his role, by being in every movie ever filmed.

Statham is pretty much an english Jackie Chan with less range. He might even know it but it probably doesn't bother him as he cashes check after check.

I had no idea that I said it but there are some on line discussions that actually do propose that he's playing the same character ( or a slight variant of it) in every movie.

Source: How Good Is a Tom Cruise Movie? That Depends on How Far He Runs

I'm a little confused by your comment and your article. Firstly you say he doesn't run a lot in JR2 yet on Vanity Fair's list it's ranked 7th overall in terms of total running distance, and the first one is not even ranked yet somehow JR1 has a higher score of 62 on RT and JR2 has a score of 37? Ouch!

For the sake of transparency, it's been awhile since I watched JR1 so I had to watch a trailer to refresh my memory. I thought it was good but for some reason I think the 2nd one might be better? Some might say the story in the sequel might be shallower and that might be fair but I also feel like it moves faster and more fun? I never felt bored and honestly was hooked from the very first scene of the movie. I got a bit of vibe from The Firm also for some reason. There's a bit of a love story with Cobie Smulders so there's a bit of something for everyone including the girlfriend. No knock on Rosumnd Pike from the first one, she's a hottie in her own right.

A quick search and most critics seem to be slamming the sequel but RT also gave Passengers a score of 31 and I say f*** them I absolutely loved that movie!

Also apparently there are 20 Reacher books. Ouch! I may have bitten off more than I can chew lol.
