OT: Let's talk about movies and TV - Part XXVII

What I especially liked is that despite the source material being a critique of its own genre, Snyder managed to make it partly an hommage to the golden age of comic books and superheros. It is by far the most stylish of comic book adaptations, right next to Nolan's DK trilogy.

It is very close to the source material, but there were some differences like switching the giant alien squid for Manhattan's powers as Ozymandias's new world catalyst.

I liked it but the stylish aspect kind of went against what the original material was all about. Watcheman is supposed to demistify super-heroes, showing a darker realistic aspect of it. Not glorify it. And some of Snyder's directing polished the edges of the conccept too much. But that's Snyder's style, he likes stuff to be pretty. Example of this is the slowmotion action and pop music. The best scene that shows what I'm talking about was when Silk Spectre and Nite Owl fight these thugs in an alley. It's almost pornographic the way they fight the thugs, almost like they are making love with all the slowmo and the easy way they dispatch them. This would fit in a Marvel/DC movie cause of how easy it is. But in Watchmen or any realisticc super-hero show, it should not be easy, it should be realistic and there should be a genuine sense of danger. This should not be playmaking because then it's like any other super-hero movies. And we are deconstructing the genre.

I watched the first season of the Alienist on Sunday. Started it at 12pm and finished it at 8:30pm. It's enjoyable. It's probably too close to Sherlock Holmes while still being a bit away from it. I'll watch the second season next week.

(but does Dakota Fanning ever grow up, feels like she's still 12)

Just finished 1st episode of Queen's Gambit. Very good so far; funny little actress, bodes well for the rest, as one can imagine her as a grown up.

I saw a movie when I was a kid. This was in the 70s and it scared the hell out of me. I remember a group of people making chalk/paper impressions of tome stones and then hanging them up in their house. They seemed to be the age of college kids as well... LOL. In any case, they had seemed to have awoken some kind of evil spirit. The last scene was a girl in a rowboat while positioned in a middle of a pond. From under her rowboat slowly rises the thing she is running from. Scared the crap out of me!

Hmmm... this made me think of "The Raft" in Creepshow 2.

Thanks, but not the film. At the end of the movie, the sole survivor. was a woman in the middle of a pond on a rowboat. It was daylight and the thing that came up from the bottom was a woman in a white dress/garb. Been trying to find this movie for a long time. Thanks everyone!

archer latest season : 7.8/10 good season

the crown season 4 : 7.5/10 top notch production with great casting and acting but not always engaging.

outlander 5 seasons : 7.5/10

I watched the first season as well. It was OK, definitely watchable but like with all series to me, I don't have the patience. Sometimes I stop for a couple of years. Right now I am watching season 6 of Endeavour which is Inspector Morse when he was young. Not as good as the Inspector Morse series but it's OK to watch. It's on PBS and I pay 5 dollars per month to PBS and it's worth it. I hate commercials and there are no commercials. They have some good Master Piece Theatre of British TV, great documentaries (Ken Burns), Eons and Nova and also nature documentaries.

The Outpost - Another war movie which don't bring anything new to this type of movies à la Lone Survivor, Black Hawk Down. The first 45 minutes are little bit slow but the rest of the movie is intense with some great technical features and put you in the middle of the action with some good acting and realistic war sequence.

If you like movies like those mention, you'll probably like this one.
I'm a sucker for movies based on real life, so I might be a little bias on this one.

In the Out of Town thread people were asking about movies you can watch over and over again, for me it's Ocean's Eleven (2001). The cast was just perfect and I love heist movies. What is your favorite heist movie?
