Ok, we have 4 days to wait to find out what is going on with Price, etc. I thought we could have a little fun while waiting and play a game.

Cap Friendly has updated their Expansion Draft Sim to include protected players of all teams.

Link: Seattle Expansion Draft Simulator - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Draft your team and post it here.

Some rules:

While Francis has said owners have given him the authority to be a max cap team, he wants to prioritize cap space. No doubt he wants to do what Yzerman has been doing in Detroit and get teams pay to take on contracts. I think he'll save about $10m in cap space, but for now we'll keep it at $8m.

1. Max Cap of $73m.

2. You get 1 point for every selection you get right. For instance, Tampa Bay has Foote, Gourde, Palat and Killorn available. If you get that selection right, you get a point.

3. You get 2 points for every pick & flip you get right. For instance, DeMelo was left unprotected by Jets. I feel like he's an obvious pick & flip.

4. You get 3 points for every contract signing you get right within $250k. For instance, Driedger seems to be an obvious one. If you guess he gets a contract of $4m x 4 years and he signs for $3.75m x 3 years you get 3 points.

5. Max final roster of 24 players, including 3 goalies (you can have less, but must have 3 goalies). Minimum is 21 (12 F, 6D, 3G). You will draft 30, but they can't all be on the roster.

Player with most points gets to horde it over the rest of us.

Should look something like this:

Team:

G:
D:
C:
W:

Pick & Flips:

Signings:

AHL (if any)

It's also a good place just to discuss roster selection in general. You don't have to draft to join.

He may select over the cap, the trade players, while retaining salary, for futures.

The final 24 player roster is at $73m obviously you're not fitting 30 players into $73m.

So if DeMelo is you're choice for the pick & flip then he's not counted in that $73m total.

If a team pays out so Seattle doesn't pick a certain player, I'll still award the point.

Keep in mind, Francis' public statements are part of his negotiation tactics. If he says he values cap space be cause of what he can allegedly do with it, that means teams will see his walk away options of not taking on their bad contracts as better, and thus would see themselves as needing to give up higher draft picks in order to convince him to take their bad contracts and lose precious cap space in the process.

So, I could see Francis spending up to the cap, or not. We'll see.

I was actually able to create a team for about $74m with 30 players.

And, I understand the public postering thing, but we have to start somewhere.

Yes, you've posed an interesting exercise. I just see a lot of options for Francis with the bigger name players. And I don't know the lesser name players - what Seattle hope will be the Karlsson's, Tuch's, Shea Theodore's, and Nate Schmidts. I knew Marchessault and Riley Smith and was shocked Florida gave them to Vegas. Smith had had a down year - but I always liked his game when he played against us.

Are there any players exposed that you compare to Tuch, Theodore, Karlesson, and Schmidt?

Price seems like a better, though higher paid, version of MAF.

Yes I think he knows that there are many NHL GM's who are in a position to value cap space very highly!

I went young where I could:

Namestnikov -- Gourde -- Voracek
Jarnkrok -- McCann -- Donskoi
Bellows -- Tierney -- A. Wagner
Aston-Reese -- Stenlund -- McEwen

Extras: Khaira, Gauthier, Pitlick

Dunn -- Fleury
Zadorov -- Bean
Lauzon -- Simek/Borgen

Extras: Giordano (flipped), DeMelo (flipped), Sekera (flipped)

Price
Driedger
Kahkonen

Extra: Vanacek (flipped), Wedgewood (AHL)

I chose Dunn over Tarasenko.

Lots of teams with a lot of garbage.

According to Cap Friendly projected cap is:

$61.7m with $19.8m in cap space; however, I have to sign Dunn, Bean, Zadorov & Borgen on D. Aston-Reese, Bellows & Khaira upfront & Driedger in goal.

On D I took Dunn (St. Louis), Bean (Carolina), Fleury (Anaheim), and Borgen (Buffalo) that's a nice young D to build from & D is the hardest to build.

Nothing really up front though. Bellows. Most forwards available are either high cost ones or 3rd/4th liners.

Only big time forward I went with is Voracek.

I took a lot of centers.

5 goalies was more than I wanted.

Price/Driedger, then Kahkonen.

The other 2 I hope to flip.

But, otherwise no real prospects have been exposed.

And teams aren't giving them up ... so far.

I think for mid-cost, I'd wade into the pool of: Josh Bailey, Niederreiter, Max Domi, Jaden Scwartz, Palat/Gourde, Dadonov.

I think for high cost, I'd take one or two of: Voracek, Johansen/Duchene, Tarasenko.

Basically, I'd construct the highest caliber top 6 possible, and then a really solid, fast, 2-way bottom six.

Bottom six players: McCann, Tierney, Vatrano, Donksoi, Kurally, Namestikov.

My first pick, like Vegas' Fleury pick, would be Price.

Oilers fans are already pissed you took Klefbom. They still hold out hope he can make a return.

Chances are better he has value as a LTIR contract.

I always liked him and wanted us to draft him, I figure he's got 2 years left, either he comes back and they get what was a solid blueliner or they get to use his LTIR for 2 years. I wasn't sure what his status was, same for John Moore but he's another guy I always liked so I went with guys I knew.

I would take the risk if I was Seattle but can understand they would prefer to allocate their capspace elsewhere.

No one really knows what his situation is or even if he's going to play again. It's definitely a high risk move, but one that could pay off.

There's only 2 years left on his contract.

There are a lot of 5 million dollar forwards I'd use the cap space on: Niedereitter, Josh Bailey, Palat/Gourde/kilorn, Schwartz, Domi. Plus I'd consider the 8 million dollar forwards (Voracek, Johansen, Duchene, Tarasenko).
