PHILADELPHIA FLYERS -- UNITED STATES PREMIER HOCKEY LEAGUE

See, there is a team playing at the Virtua Skate Zone here known as the Philadelphia Flyers that plays in the brand new United States Premier Hockey League.

What’s that league, you might ask?

The USPHL is uniquely positioned in the Atlantic region to facilitate a clear pathway for players graduating from Bantam hockey looking to progress through Midget and Junior Hockey on to college and pro hockey.

The USPHL will operate with 5 divisions – Premier, Elite and Empire at the Junior Level and 16U and 18U at the Midget level.

Each division provides a step in the progression to fulfilling a player’s ultimate goal of becoming a collegiate or professional hockey player.

Teams have been selected to participate in specific USPHL divisions based upon geography, strong player pools, rink ownership, financial strength and history of success and integrity at the highest level.

Virtanen looks good. Kind can absolutely fly.

Hopefully Sanheim doesn't feel that he has to take a backseat to him offensively. I want to see him play aggressively.

Didn't realize he was wearing the full cage until he got called for the misconduct.

so calgary has 9 goals but sanheim has no points and no plus minus. is he even playing?

He was in the box during the scoring barrage.

Also looks like with Virtanen back, Sanheim is now on the "second" PP unit, which doesn't seem smart, but I'm no coach.

Wasn't Sanheim doing most of his damage during ES though? I thought they had a 0-18 drought on the PP or something like that.

He does, but if he were feeding Virtanen one-timers on the PP, that would help his point production. I think the PP struggles were more guys just being snake bitten. Greg Chase is a pretty good player who just got his first goal of the season tonight. I consider myself pretty critical, but I never saw anything from Sanheim that would suggest he wasn't a good PP guy. He walks the line like a pro, he's a great passer, makes quick decisions. He doesn't have a wicked shot, but that's why he would be better paired with Virtanen.

I only saw the 3rd period, but was listening to the Calgary radio broadcast earlier in the game while working at my desk. It sounded like the two PP units were divided pretty evenly with talent. Sanheim had Adam Tambellini and Chase Lang with him, not sure who else. So I'm sort of guessing they are trying an even split on the PP. I think Thomas, Virtanen, and Greg Chase were 3 on the other unit.

Fazleev usually gets PP time...unless that changed with Virtanen returning.

Yeah, they're split somewhat evenly I guess, but I just don't think its the best strategy, especially if you are struggling as they were. Sanheim is the best playmaker on the team. You would think they would pair him with the scorers.

I get what French is trying to do. He has a big gun on each unit, but Virtanen scored 45 goals last year. Which unit do you think is going to get first crack at the PP?

Great Phantoms game tonight

Zepp came up big when we needed him too, team played well together being able to clean up after each other's mistakes. Cousins looked good, Stortini actually had a few moments where he controlled the puck well while holding off defenders. Laughton was solid. Hagg had a good game, great on the powerplay.

Some guy sat at one of the round top tables near me and we scored a goal, so he decided to stay instead of going back to his seat. He said he moved there to purposely change up the mojo, and we scored two more times after that!

The PPL Center was rocking after the tying goal and during the Rosehill fight.

Brian Propp was there tonight too, I got to see him up close while he took pictures with a peewee team. Pretty cool.

Hextall is always up in his box long before the game starts. I always want to give him a thumbs up or something from my section while he's looking around, but I don't want to look like I'm not doing my job, and I don't want to keep my thumb up for five minutes if he never notices me haha.

Cousins has looked good I see where you said. Glad to see him pick up his game this year. Good for him and the Flyers.

Cousins leads the team in points if I'm not mistaken. He had an up and down first pro yr so the improvement is nice to see, though it's still really early. I thought he had a pretty good preseason as well, hopefully he keeps his head down and keeps working. In another yr or two the Flyers could have a nice influx of quality bottom sixers (Cousins, Leier and Laughton).

Nice to see Hagg picking up some points as well. 3a in his first 4 games this season, that's a total of 1g and 6a for 7pts in his first 14 AHL games. Not bad for a 19 year old adjusting to NA ice/style of play.
