The best scorer ever in a WC Just Fontaine has passed away.
He reached a C1 final with Reims (losing to Real Madrid's Di Stefano, Puskas and Kopa).
And of course he came to that 58 WC as a backup and after an injury was pushed as starter. He clicked with Kopa and finished with 13 goals in 6 games. All with boots that weren't his!

Always humble he refused to talk about his record.
That seems like an unbeatable record, especially given how the game has evolved.
With that said, Platini's 84 Euro record (9 goals in 5 games) was scored in a period where offensive football wasn't great.

On that note here's the the Portugal game called by BBC's John Motson who passed away last week:

Reims during his peak era was one of the best team in Europe. Fontaine, Kopa, Giraudo, Hidalgo, Piantoni, Colonna, Jean Vincent, all were stars and even Ballon d’Or winner in Kopa.

Reims’ decline ran parallel with French football for nearly 15 years. When France won their first international title (Euro 1984), it was Hidalgo who coached them.

St Étienne also reached the C1 Final in the 70s against Bayern, losing 1-0 on a famous controversial goalposts (that weren't at the norm and ended up favoring Bayern).

Yes French football declined severely between the 60s and 75s.
And it wasn't before the huge overhaul of prioritizing academies in the early 80s that France became more than a decent football country with a few incredible talents once in a while (Kopa, Platini).

Evilo coming in with the historical cheats against French teams. 😤 This time it was the Germans

You could almost imagine him there as a young man watching the French matches at the 58 WC :)

But yes, as a kid frowing up in the late 70's / early 80's it was nice seeing a "new" country emerging amongst the best and I developed sort of soft spot for them.

Same type of thing happened to Spain some years later.

Imagine playing technical football like this on modern pitches with modern preparations? Balls were also much heavier.

People think of Platini has that 10 who could score. But few could pass better than him. I remember seeing him as a retired player, already fat and all. He would've move from the center circle and would send absolutely unreal blind passes to his (running) partners. Passes than nobody could even imagine.
No dissimilar to current Messi :D

On that Di Stefano footage, it's surprising to see he opted to pay that type of play on a pitch which looks to be on a bad condition. And even more surprising that he looks to pull it off successfully.
