In terms of legendary French singers, he's right up there with Edith Piaf. In addition to his career as a singer, he also gave one indelibly memorable movie performance as Charlie, the piano player, in one of Francois Truffaut's best films Shoot the Piano Player. He'll be remembered in France forever.
