Bottom-6 role in Tampa. Limited ice time. But he got to Tampa anyways. Champion now. Tampa were interested enough to bring him in.

Same story with Stralman. Leafs had no talent on defense and still traded him.

They had room on Marlies for Verhaeghe. And threw him away. For nothing. Why not to wait and see?

Well, technically we needed the contract slot. Thats not "nothing". It allowed Lou the freedom to make additional trades and bring in more assets.

If you want to play the other hand, we brought in Holl for free. Chicago tossed him to the trashheap. Hes far more valuable then Verhaeghe. You win some you lose some. Every team does this.

You think that matters?

It's the internet, feelings over facts.

While im giving Lou blame, its not really that big of am issue. We needed the contact slots. Lou got them. And in the end if all we lost out was a league minimum level player then so be it. Sign one in the offseason or trade a 7th for one. Who cares?

Bingo.

The fact that this thread has been bumped shows you just how stupid this is.

Let's be honest. Verhaege was a nothing prospect. These things happen to every team. I think we're now in a place where it shouldn't bother anyone.

This happens to Tampa all of the time (and literally just did with Verhaege). Tampa is a great team.

I thought Grabner played fine for Toronto when he was here. Yeah he couldn't score as well as other years, but what did you expect?

I think Toronto fans can live with the reality of how this trade turned out.

Comparing this to the Stralman trade is a lol.

Stralman was an NHL D when we traded him. He got time at the NHL level and was very much an NHL bound prospect, and he pretty much started to show what he was capable of within 2-3 years when people took his medical condition seriously. That was just a bad, bad trade.

Verhaeghe was a nothing prospect and a total contract dump who broke out 4 organizations and 5 years later. He was even just not qualified by his previous team (Tampa). This isn't one that got away, this was one where random shit just happens sometimes.

This is not about Verhaeghe. This is about Leaf problems with scouting and developing. Good teams have low draft picks on their rosters. Leafs have almost none. Regimes change but things stay the same.

No late picks in the top6 or top4. Those holes are patched with vets. Not good at all.

What an eccentric point of view.
The leafs could have those draft picks you covet but they replaced them through trades and signings for players that are more effective in production and cap management. How could that remotely be a negative?

This is not at all proof that Toronto has problems with scouting and developing. After the 2nd round of the draft it is anyone's guess as to how well any player might turn out.

This trade was all about clearing contracts and the 50 max contract limit of a 5 for 1 deal as Leafs were planning a lot of future moves and needed that flexibility.

However this is a really old bump that has not much current value today so I'm going to close it and let it float away.
