Maple Leafs sign forward Scott Sabourin to one-year, $700K contract

Matthews-and-Sabourin-Maple-Leafs.jpg

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Scott Sabourin to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level and $250,000 in the AHL, per Sportsnet's Chris Johnston

The 28-year-old had been with the organization on an AHL-only deal and was placed on waivers earlier Sunday.

The native of Orleans, Ont., had six points in 35 games with the Ottawa Senators last season, his lone pro campaign in the NHL.

The move comes after the revelation earlier Sunday that the Maple Leafs could be without power forward Wayne Simmonds for six weeks after he was hurt during the team's 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday

Your Worst Nightmare
Don't get too excited here leafs nation and all post your thoughts at once.

He probably was in line for an NHL contract. With him sitting on the Marlies, he was always next in line that way for an NHL contract if some jam was needed. He was an NHL player last season, none of the other AHL contracts were close to that level. He will not play very minutes if he see's NHL ice. He is here to run people over and swing momentum however he can through physical force.

Losing Dell on waivers opened up a contract spot for someone and losing Simmonds, Thornton and Robertson made a forward with some jam more of a priority. They didn't need to force a trade to bring in Sabourin.

SCOUTING REPORT
Has outstanding size, grit and toughness for the National Hockey League game. Is pretty good in front of the opposing goal and along the wall. Has now shown an ability to contribute enough offensively to be a regular contributor at the NHL level. Can be accused of taking bad penalties.
Long Range Potential : Big, tough depth winger.

Sabourin won't really ever play unless under extreme circumstance. He is not NHL quality.

It doesn’t take Dubas long to get grit in to the lineup now does it.... Might be a good idea to follow this with another Ahl signing ofbthe same type of player if there is one like that around.

Good signing. Dude is not afraid to drop the gloves with Reaves.

Not afraid to, but looked like he regretted it immediately lol.
Might be more in the 'light heavyweight' sized NHLers instead of the 'legit heavyweight' (Chara, Willson, Reaves).
To be fair, I dont think more than 5 or so guys in the NHL could hold their own again Reaves.

I think he’ll only be going in if teams start taking advantage that we don’t have Simmonds in the line up. For example if we have a back to back against a team and someone starts running around out there, insert Sabourin in the next night and tell him to go send a message

I like this low risk signing. Doesn’t hurt to have a certified meat head in the group.

To me, agreeing to, then proceeding to fight reeves makes you a heavyweight. Win or lose.

Seems like a depth chart move. Would be surprised if he gets a game. Though always fun to be proven wrong by an underdog
