Toronto is the only team that pays those outrageous prices. I am a Leafs fan, but Dubas has made a real mess with the contracts.

Look around the league, $6 million doesnt get you a star. Sure, you can find some bargain contracts out there and yeah, Marner and Matthews are overpaid but again, saying Marner is worth $6 million is ridiculous.

Matthews is not overpaid, he is the real deal. He is just stuck playing for Babcock who holds him back.

Marner is an average winger that overachieved last season. Nylander is better than Marner and makes half the salary.

Considering contracts it is debatable, how much more valuable Doughty is than Pesce (from a TML POV). Pesce is nowhere close to Doughty as an offensive player. But Toronto has Rielly and Barrie as puck moving Ds already. And Pesce is as good as Doughty defensively for less than 40% of the cap hit.

Toronto would have to retain a lot of salary to trade him.

Probably a + from the Leafs to get it done but the salaries are very close. 1 UFA D man for another. Calgary gets a bit more offense and speed, Toronto gets more D and grit.

Other than Kapanen or Johnson, I'm not sure, mainly because of the contracts that any of their players have much value in the trade market.

Matthews for Draisaitl + Gagner (cap ) . Only kidding as I think Draisaitl is a better fit . I really wanted Edmonton to offer their 1st + to Toronto for Kadri + Kapanen this pass summer . Edmonton then could of Flipped RNH or ran 2 stocked line and had 1 helluva a fast 3rd line

this makes zero sense for the Leafs when you look at the players ages.

This makes plenty of sense if the Leafs want to win a cup during Matthews contract though.
