I will be going through our roster and injured players and we will determine the players role... i.e Kessel (Elite winger) vs (1A winger) vs (1B winger) vs (2A winger)

This is not determining their role for the team, but what they're capable of on a playoff team. I'll only be putting what in my mind are "realistic" options.

Term definitions:

Elite: Top 5 in their position
1A: 1st line/1st pairing/#1 Goalie
1B: Able to fill in 1st line/1st pairing/Average Starter
2A: 2nd line/2nd pairing/Back-up
2B: Able to fill in 2nd line/2nd pairing/Too good for AHL Starter but not proven
3A: 3rd line/3rd pairing
3B Able to fill in 3rd line/3rd pairing
4A 4th line
4B: Able to fill in 4th line
Scratch: 13th player/7th dman
AHL player: Self explanatory

I'll be starting from the net out.

Goaltending

James Reimer 1B
Ben Scrivens 2A

Defense

Cody Franson 2B
Mark Fraser 3A
Jake Gardiner 1B
Carl Gunnarsson 2B
Korbinian Holzer 3A
Mike Komisarek 3B
Michael Kostka 3B
John-Michael Liles
Dion Phaneuf

Forwards

Mikhail Grabovski
Nazem Kadri
Phil Kessel
Leo Komarov
Nikolai Kulemin
Joffrey Lupul
Clarke MacArthur
Jay Mcclement

2A without a doubt.

Liles must be taking dumps on the ice at practice because how he's not playing is astounding.

Funny that as of now 90 percent see him as a a top four and the guy can't crack the lineup. Something is amiss.

It's more a matter of system and situation than actual ability.

imo. it sort of makes sense.

Phaneuf is your only clear cut guy. He's with no doubt on the top pairing.

xxxx - Phaneuf
xxxx - xxxx
xxxx - xxxx

Then who ever plays best with Phaneuf completes that pair. RC Has tried Gunnar/Holzer/Kostka and has decided that the best match is Holzer. JML Obviously doesn't fit with Phaneuf.

Holzer - Phaneuf
xxxx - xxxx
xxxx - xxxx

RC likes to keep pairs together, and likes to have one offensive D and defensive D on each pair. JML isn't a D first guy, so if you go through those guys first you have Fraser who is D first and Kostka/Gunnar are the two-way guys who can fit in as a D first guys. Fraser definitely has a spot because of that.

Holzer - Phaneuf
xxxx - xxxx
Fraser - xxxx

Right now Fraser - Franson has had a lot of chemistery and that pair won't break up for nothing.

Holzer - Phaneuf
xxxx - xxxx
Fraser - Franson

The middle two spots are some combination of Kostka/Gunnar/Liles/Gardiner. Which would only give the possible pair combinations of two offensive D, two two-way D or a two-way D and an offensive D. RC style isn't one of having a two-way guy with an O guy, not enough D first in that, so he puts the two two-way guys together. Kostka - Gunnar

Holzer - Phaneuf
Kostka - Gunnar
Fraser - Franson

And boom. No JML.

I agree. Way too weak a player for a team that doesn't play the possession style of game. I'm not a fan of his defense. 2B/3A guy who gets minutes on the PP

None of our defensemen play a possession style game, where as Liles does...

Our d-men can't make a pass out of our zone to save their lives.
