2010-11 OHL season knows Sudbury Wolves forward Josh Leivo has become a sleeper for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft.

Leivo, the Wolves' 11thround pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, is coming off a breakout rookie campaign.

After scoring two goals in his first 30 games, the Innisfil native tallied 11 markers in his next 34 starts.

But his real coming-out party was during the post-season, when, playing on the first line with centre Michael Sgarbossa and right-winger Andrey Kuchin, he scored six goals and assisted on seven others.

He helped the Pack upset the favoured Ottawa 67's in the first round, before falling to the mighty Mississauga St. Michael's Majors in the second.

Leivo wasn't listed by NHL Central Scouting on its final rankings, released in April, but it's clear the 6-foot-2, 188- pound forward is on the radar of several big-league clubs ahead of the seven-round draft, which runs today and Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.

Love these kind of picks, to be honest.

The breakout player of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs has to be Sudbury Wolves right wing Joshua Leivo, the one-time 11th-round selection who is merely the leading rookie scorer. That makes him an intriguing case as far as prospect status is concerned. Leivo, who is 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds and had two points Tuesday as the Wolves stuck with MasterCard Memorial Cup-host Mississauga for two-plus periods, wasn't ranked by NHL Central Scouting for the entry draft, which was a "mega-surprise" to observers such as Brock Otten at OHL Prospects

It's good to hear that he maintained a PPG pace in the second half of the season, and his playoff stats are great.

He's only a rookie too, so it sounds like a decent pick.

Played in his minor hockey in Barrie.

A few years ago and was almost not drafted into the OHL, had to be added to the OHL draft list in the last minute.

He was life and death to make the Wolves and really only played significant minutes in the last few months.

He was one of the top forward for the Wolves in the last few months, and was probably the teams second best forward in the playoffs.

If he improves next year like he did this year, he will be a high reward type of player. No doubt a risk, but less then 10 percent of third round picks make the NHL, so why not take a player who has a higher upside?

This is a swing for the fences pick... I watched a few Sudbury games towards the end of the year and he was definitly noticibale.

The question is was it a hot streak.. or is he just "arriving".

Considering Biggs and Percy were considered pretty "safe" picks, it's nice to take a chance in the 3rd round.

Joshua Leivo may have emerged on many NHL scouts radar after a breakout OHL playoffs that saw the 6-foot-2, 185-pound left winger rack up 13 points, on 6 goals and 7 assists in just 8 games for his Sudbury Wolves. The smooth skating forward has good size, nice hands, the ability to create on the fly, drives to the net hard, has excellent hockey smarts, moves very well, enjoys getting physically engaged, and works hard on and off the ice. He is a very reliable two-way forward, that can play both a grinding and a finesse game, and is an ultimate teammate. Leivo put up 13 goals and 30 points in 64 games in his rookie campaign this year, after an outstanding training camp. The native of Innisfil, Ontario was drafted in the 11th round of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, after scoring 30 goals for his Barrie Minor Midget AAA Colts squad. The 18-year-old was not ranked by NHL Central Scouting, and if he does slip through the draft, I expect him to have a big year next season in Sudbury now that he knows he can contribute at the major junior level.

Not bad.

Wow, why do the make belief scouts on this board whine about players they have never seen play?

He had a solid finish to the year, and is pretty young. There is a lot of upside with this guy, and if he continues to improve as he had, he will be a huge steal.

You all whine about how they didn't take the player you want, then that player isn't picked anywhere near that slot anyway.

Joshua Leivo: A Guy You Should Know
Although the Sudbury Wolves weren't able to bottle the lightning they had going in the first round of the OHL playoffs in a sweep of the heavily favored Ottawa 67's when they went up against the Mississauga St. Mike's Majors, one player not on many radars attracted the notice of scouts.

That player is left winger Joshua Leivo, who posted a pretty pedestrian 13-17-30 stats line in 64 OHL games during the regular season.

At 6-2, 185, he's got nice size and is a pretty good skater for a big winger. He works hard along the walls and in the corners, but what dropped him this season was a lack of puck skills and hands for finishing.

According to Red Line Report's man in Sudbury, Rod McNair, Leivo was a "crest shooter" for much of the season, so it came as quite a surprise to him when the Wolves blew Ottawa out of the water and Leivo tallied four goals and 10 points in the sweep playing on the top like with Michael Sgarbossa (San Jose prospect) and Andrey Kuchin. As a result of the Ottawa thrashing, Red Line listed Leivo at 142 in their latest issue as a potential fifth-round project.

Leivo and his teammates unfortunately had the tables turned on them by OHL favorite Missy, who not only hosts the 2011 Memorial Cup next month, but could go in through the front door by winning the OHL championship. They swept the Wolves in four and Leivo finished with six goals and 13 points in eight games.

Leivo was not even listed by Central Scouting on their final rankings, but as we all know, their list goes final before teams really get going in the playoffs, so we have to imagine that if they did take playoff performance into account, Leivo would be on there somewhere.

If teams believe that his production was not a fluke and that he can reprise his scoring role going forward, Leivo has the look of one of those interesting late-round picks with upside. But, he is risky, because he was essentially mediocre during the regular season. The team that drafts him will do so because they believe he's not a flash in the pan. That could mean he's a longshot, but his postseason play certainly opened some eyes.

Either he got hot at the right time, or he finally figured things out. I'll be watching him closely as I'm sure most of you will next season.

I had him a bit lower in the 4th round, but an intriguing pick!
