That was his choice. He wanted to be last to sign. The Leafs would have signed him already if he wanted to. Stop trying to make everything a problem
He would have signed last summer but the Leafs didn't want to meet his ask.

Nylander works very well with him. He just has no finish. This year.

I mean. How many times can he hit the post or miss? It’s nuts.

Matthews has had to play with rookies/grinders/old timers his whole career. Willy last year and for like 10 games this year have been the only reprieve
Willy needs to start shooting to hit the net. The number of shots that miss the top corner is crazy.

It's funny. If anyone had of said at the start of the year- by the end of the year the Leafs will have trouble scoring and Nylander coming back will not help the offence...no one would have believed it.

He has had trouble getting pucks thru his whole career really. His Oish% and PDO are only low because of his own s% being abysmal. He is his own worst enemy this year, production wise.

8-17 against the top 10 D teams. The Leafs are lucky to be in the playoffs.

I see us "contenders" are heavily backing into the playoffs.

Talk about losing games going into the most important time.

Gud pros
Yeah, but it was a nothing game. Saturday is another nothing game too, so, I expect another loss.

Not sure why I even bothered coming into this thread. Leaf's go toe-to-toe with the best team in the league in a nothing game, first post;

"Another crap effort"

Handful of posts after;

"Leafs would miss the playoffs if the season wasn't ending"

No way you guys actually watched the games, nothing but trolls or serial pessimists.

Despite losing the last couple of games, you have to like the way the team is playing particularly Andersen at this point.

This is more playoff style hockey that allows you a better opportunity to win, than that pond hockey they played in March of last goal wins and ended up being 30th in goals against.

I think the reason is that he gets double teamed all the time and his wingers never get open to receive his passes; they third man from the opposition always cuts his out shadowing the rotating winger but if the winger isn't willing to "engage" in board battle they lose the puck and matthews gets frustrated and tries to do a lot by himself
He plays on the outside since his injury. He's obviously afraid to drive the net. He doesn't deke much anymore.

I have a bad feeling that our depth is overrated. We are not getting a lot of scoring from guys not named Matthews, Marner, and JT. Haven't all year.

Our 4th line is getting killed out there against recently.. They might be cheap when it comes to Cap usage, but its starting to show also that you get what you pay for.

When Matthews and Marner new cap busting deals kick in the gap between the haves and have-nots the first group are very wealthy and the second group are very poor is also going to be very reflective of his in terms of depth and talent level.

We as Leaf Nation are going to have to get use to JT, Mitch and Auston caring the load nightly offensively because proportionately they will be consuming a very large portion of the hard cap space.

So what can they do? Marner and Matthews are still on ELCs and they still couldn't get very much depth scoring. We just have to hope Kadri and Willy bounce back. If they are still here next year, that is. Kadri and Willy have to have a good playoffs too this season.

It would also have probably meant paying Nylander more
Yikes. You guys dont give it a rest. One more time...willy finished his elc. He was already overpaid based on his production. Willy already got 7.5MM normalized for 6 years which is a better contract than Drai, who is paid only 1mm more for 2 more years. Marner could have taken Nylanders contract and easily re-signed for over 11.5MM to exceed drais contract over 8. Nylander would NOT have gotten more. This is the NHL, not a soup line for bums.
