GAME DAY: Maple Leafs at Devils

MAPLE LEAFS (21-10-2) AT DEVILS (11-13-7)
7 p.m. Tuesday
Prudential Center
TV: TSN, RADIO: Sportsnet 590 The Fan
THE BIG MATCHUP

G Frederik Andersen vs. G Kevin Kinkaid
Despite a 6-1 blowout in their only meeting to date, the last two games involving these teams in ’17-18 were one-goal results and the Devils losing Saturday’s shootout to the Preds, 2-1, points to another. Kinkaid stopped 28 shots from Nashville and has better numbers than the struggling and now-injured Cory Schneider, while Andersen will be seeking better support in his end and on offence than he’s received in most of this road trip.
KEYS TO THE GAME
  1. FINISH THE ROAD WORK
There are no moms in the stands or hyped opponents for Toronto, just a winnable game against a sub-.500 team and a chance to end five straight on the road with a positive result. The Leafs were able to go home on the weekend and recharge after losing two in Florida.
  1. HALL FOR ONE
Taylor Hall hopes to return after missing the past couple of games with a lower-body injury. The Hart Trophy winner has been held to eight points in 13 games by the Leafs in his career. The big-picture story with Hall is developing off-ice where the Devils hope to get the potential UFA on a long-term deal in the next year-and-a-half.
  1. HIGH RISK
The Devils have a fraction of the giveaways Toronto has been charged with, but have to turn that stat into more goals.
  1. STRONG START
The Leafs lead the league with 13 wins when leading after the first period, but a series of unfortunate events on this trip has seen them forced to play from behind much of the time. A good time for William Nylander to get rolling and to do it early.
  1. LONG MEMORIES
The Devils allowed six different Leafs to score back on Nov. 9 at Scotiabank Arena, including John Tavares, who now has 14 at their expense. They will need the same effort the underdog Panthers showed in Saturday.

KEY PLAYERS
Kyle Palmieri and Auston Matthews
Palmieri has worn the “A” with Taylor Hall out of the lineup the last two games with a lower body injury. Palmieri had a four-game point streak broken in an overtime loss to Nashville over the weekend. But he did have five goals and an assist over that span, and leads the team with 17 goals. Matthews has been somewhat quiet, with no goals over his last three games.
NEED TO KNOW
Devils goalie Keith Kincaid has been in goal most of the past two games. The snake-bitten Cory Schneider started against Las Vegas two games ago, but was pulled midway through the first period after allowing four goals on seven shots. Scheneider is one of the bigger mysteries around the league; he has not won a game since Dec. 27 of last year and is 0-15-3 over that span. Part of the problem has been his teammates’ play in front of him — they scored three own-goals in Schenieder’s second-last start. But the veteran goalie needs to snap out of this funk for the Devils to have success. New Jersey’s current .887 save percentage is third-worst in the league …Hall remains questionable with a lower body injury.
UP NEXT Thursday, vs. Florida Panthers, 7 p.m.

Just play another game without penalties and it's an easy win for the Leafs

So is Hall in tonight? I guess we'll know in a few hours.

Either way, it shouldn't matter. Leafs need to start on time. How many times have a lot of us said... let's see a 60 minute effort. I hope that happens tonight.

There's so much talent on this team. This stretch of poor play shouldn't last much longer.

It'd be nice to see the big boys pad their stats a bit.

Just play well defensively and move the puck out of the D zone quick, and hopefully the rest will take care of itself.

This is no occasion to blame Hyman, Marleau, and the 4th line. This needs to be a full team win. Everyone needs to smarten up. We can't take any team lightly.

At the start of the year, how are teams defending your power play different than they are now?
Babcock
: I think everybody does things differently, but if you want to know what’s going on with our power play, you don’t have to look any further than us. This is about us, not the other team. Let’s just simplify and execute. Let’s have puck speed. Let’s have people at the net. Let’s get some pucks back. Let’s win faceoffs. That’s simple. We’ll have the puck more and we’ll have more success and be happier.

Go Leafs Go! Will probably only be able to catch the last period, hopefully we have a three or four goal lead by then.

Have the Moms been sent home yet?.

Was nice to have them on the trip but they were bad for business .. Too much dancing and not enough cheering for my liking.

Rielly and Gards together is risky business. Yes they will create offense better than anyone else on team but someone needs to look after the backend. Very difficult to have 5 forwards on ice. Who will get puck back if we lose possession? Who will cover attackers in front of our net? Who will block a shot? Who will stop attackers from going hard to our net at will? These are some things you must think about when going with a 5 forward system.

I'm in NY for work this week and didn't even realize the Leafs were playing the Devils in NJ today until I saw this thread.

Picked up tickets right away.

38 USD all in via verified Ticket Master for 12th row lower bowl where the Leafs shoot twice.

God bless US hockey ticket prices, GO LEAFS GO

Risky business sure, but so was changing from 3F 2D on the PP to 4F 1D. The team is built on offense, until a legit top pair D comes around, they should be playing to their STRENGTHS rather than trying to minimize on their weaknesses.
