I think Toronto's D will impress this season. I think the right handed shot vs left handed shot is being overly exaggerated. We have 4 dmen that should be slotted in the top 4 (Reilly, Gardiner, Dermott and Zaitsev) play them together and see how it goes in the pre-season. I don't get why it isn't happening. Lets see how Dermott or Reilly does on the right side. Give it a shot.

Only thing that will keep this D as being as good as it can is Babcock being stubborn.

Itsssss wayyyyyy over hyped. Before babcocks 2014 olympic commemts it was never even a thing.

This idea we absolutly need a top pair rhd to compete is absurd, we have a num 1 d in rielly and a solid num 2 in gards. You dont nave to pair them with rhd. Its nice but not an issue. We have Z and liligren coming.

I'm a big Dermott fan but he is far from a proven top-4 D, let alone being one while playing his off-side.

I would much prefer if he stas on 3LD behind Rielly and Gardiner this season.

I believe Babcock to be stubborn with a lot of things but he does what needs to be done with managing defensemen. We don't exactly have a surplus of reliable defensemen.

Here is a gripe I have with this defense corps:

Ron Hainsey is likely playing in the top pair.
He played in the top pair last season.
He doesn't play at all during the power play.
Somehow, the guy played just under 22 minutes per game last season.
Wow, that seems like an awful heavy load on a player right?
Oh wait, the guy is 37 years old right now! 22 minutes a night composed solely of top pair duties and penalty kill (including something like 95% of the team's time down a man) on a 37 year old is completely unsustainable.

If, say, the team had upgraded on the right handed defense position with a solid defender who would be expected to be in the top pair, Hainsey becomes this year's Roman Polak. Sadly, that wasn't the case. Unless Zaitsev rebounds in a major way, that top pair is comprised of a slightly better and more composed Rielly and a worse off 37 year old overused Hainsey.

Zaitsev will be a top pairing dman this year. Book it.

For the Marlies? He is basically a fringe NHL player, who has an albatross of a contract.Leafs defense is horrific. It will be fine in the regular season, when the team is scoring at a record clip. In playoffs once again the Leafs defense will get exposed, especially playing against big, physical teams.

Leafs defense is too soft, and neither Reilly or Gardiner understand situational hockey. If Leafs are serious about contending they need to upgrade the defense.

the defense won't even be fine in the regular season. you are overestimating that

Everyone still optimistic about our defensive corps?

Almost seems set in stone that the top 4 are:

Reilly - Hainsey
Gardener - Zaitsev

And the other 3 will be comprised of 2 rookies and a second year player.

That right side looks terrible to me.

We need to start putting our LHD on the right side. I don't think I can handle watching Hainsey and Zaitsev on the top 4 again.

Leafs had the #12 goaltender last year and the #12 defense last year. They'll have the #1 team offense this year AINEC.

Zaitsev looks back to normal this preseason. In a year we will have one of the better young d- cores.

Rielly Zaitsev
Dermott Liljegren
Sandin Ozhiganov
Rosen Holl
Borgman

When Holl and Borgman are your 8-9 guys, you are looking pretty good.

Dermott was a game changer for the defense corps last season. For me, he’s already a top 4 defenseman, just by the eye test over most of last year. I give him a rookie mulligan for his playoff struggles, and I expect he’ll be right back to solid form to start the year.

Then, if that happens and if Zaitsev can return to his rookie form, suddenly they no longer need to rely on Gardiner so much, and things are suddenly way better.

Add in the bonus of having JT instead of Bozak, and their entire team defensive game is improved by a landslide.

Lots of “ifs”, but all are realistic IMO.

Not that bad of a situation at all.

Babs seems to have Rosen Paired with Ozhiganov. I really wonder if its just because Dermott is injured of if Rosen actually took his spot on the last pair. Going to be interesting to see how things unfold over these next two games.

"I’m trying [to help him]," Zaitsev told Sportsnet over the weekend. "Babs tells me, like always yells ‘f—— translate to him.’ So I’ve got to go do my drill and f—— translate it to him at the same time."

No coach in NHL history uses the F word as much as Babcock. Just sit behind the bench, how can this guy talk about good people, gudpro? How can you take a young son and get premium seats behind the bench without them being exposed to this guys conduct. Total hypocrite imo.

The refs seem to like to screw Babcock.

Maybe they get sick of the F bombs ?

and whining ?

Our right side D consists of 38 year old LHD Hainsey playing on his weakside, Zaitsev and Carrick at present.

Not much analysis needs to happen there to clarify the situation.

Give Dubas credit, they've looked to the draft to find a blueliner with there 1sts and 2nds the last two seasons, looked to Sweden for Borgman and Rosen and the KHL with Zaitsev and Ozhiganov. System is developing D well with Dermott graduating. Beyond a trade or UFA Dubas is doing what he can.
