Proposal: Leafs-Capitals (minor trade)

This trade would occur simply for cap reasons.

Brooks Orpik has one more year at 5.5 million (very weak trade market out there for him)
Matt Martin has 2 more years at 2.5 million (likely no market out there for Matt Martin)

So

Matt Martin (0.5 retained) for Brooks Orpik.

The capitals get to save 3.5 million for next year to help them to sign Carlson. The leafs get to save 2 million the year after (2019-2020) to help save cap room for the big 3. They are essentially writing off a 2 million dollars from Martins contract in the 2019-2020 season but do so at the cost of taking orpik at a much higher price for one year ( a year in which they have TONNES of cap space)

Its a win-win deal solely for purposes of cap space, and to help both teams sign their best players.

I don't see why Toronto should retain on This, considering Orpik makes twice as much.

Maybe the Leafs don't want to expand Washington's cap room because they would rather go after Carlson instead.

Why give the Caps more cap room when the have a UFA that might interest you?
