Vancouver won't be giving up on Virtanen when his value is low and he has shown signs of improving into a useful NHLer last season. We also won't trade Sutter unless a 1st is coming back because we need centres desperately.

not even considering the contract he has, Canucks should and would take a 2nd rounder and run as fast as they can

Sutter is a horrible player, not worth a 1st even if he was paid league minimum.

As for the OP. Change the players to late draft picks and sure. Otherwise, the Canucks aren't in needs of more bodies.

Why on earth are the leafs giving up cheap winger depth for a 4m 4C and a bust prospect?
Something around Kapanen/brown a replacement D and a pick for tanev is the only deal to be made between these two teams

I'd do the OP as a Canucks fan, and I have nothing but the highest expectations from Virtanen.

As for the excitement surround Grundstrom, yes he could be a top six player, but were we not saying the same thing about Kapanen and even Gauthier not too long ago? Not to rag on someone I hope pans out, but being your top prospect doesn't guarantee anything, we know that in Vancouver all too well.

Trade makes no sense from the Leafs POV. Sutter would be 4C and do not want to take on his cap hit. Other than the allure of being the 6th overall pick, does Virtanen actually project to being a much better winger than Connor Brown currently is? No interest in giving away Grundstrom in the process.

Kapanen could still very well end up a top 6 winger in the future. Regarding the Goat, he was viewed by most to have a ceiling of 3rd line C but would likely settle in as 4th line C. I still expect him to carve out a career as a 4th line NHLer.

Grundstrom has the sandpaper in his game that the Leafs lack and that is one of the reasons he is viewed as a top prospect in the system. Most of us expect him to be a player but hard to gauge right now if that’s top 6 or bottom 6.

I don't think any Leaf fan thought GOAT would be a top 6 center.. Maybe the year after the draft talking about his absolute MAX ceiling. Most of us know he is a 4th line C for years now. We all thought he would be a good 3rd line C.

Kapanen is not a bust so not sure what you are saying? He is a top 6 winger just on the deepest RW in the league. Leafs are loaded at forward man I don't know why people keep thinking they are bad. There are some really good players in the league who couldn't crack our top 6.

Bothe teams say no. I give Virtanen one more year and Sutter would be a really expensive 4th line centre

Don’t think Vancouver can afford to trade Sutter without getting a center back. Grundstrom and Leivo are nothing they don’t have. Guessing Vancouver passes on this.

May not fill a need for VAN but the value favors them. At this point acquiring assets is more important than positional need, so I think VAN says yes.

I'd say no from Vancouver.

Sutter still has a lot of value as a center, even if he is overpaid. He is a terrible trade target for the leafs though. They have three great centers, no need for a defensive specialist that gets paid as much as Sutter does. Not sure the Canucks can afford to lose him right now though.
Virtanen still has top 6 potential. Even if he doesn't hit it, he still has the mean streak that can elevate a team in the playoffs. The value of a guy like that is high and he can still be an elite third liner if he doesn't hit his potential. We've spent a lot of time on him. It would be ridiculous if we trade him now, only to see him become another Cam Neely on a different team. He needs the time to develop.

We have enough wingers like Leivo and Brown. We have enough prospects and no room for guys like Grundstrom. This trade makes the team worse, not better.

Why do the Leafs even do this? Their center depth is bonkers with Matthews, Tavares, and Kadri. Do you think they're gonna waste cap on a 4th line center? Or add Sutter to the wing when they already have guys slotted there? It's inefficient. Not to mention, why would the Leafs trade away young cost-controlled assets knowing full well that they're going to have to re-sign Marner, Matthews etc.

Conversely,

Why do the Canucks even do this? They can't afford to lose a center and not get one in return. The only good thing is that they'd get guys like Grundstrom and Leivo, but they already have similar players in their organization.
