So TOR signed him June 20 to a 1-way contract and are now shopping him?

Must be one of these Shanaplans.

In theory, it’s a good idea to flip him for anything. However, he has no value sooo now you are just alienating him at this point.

He did play after the Raiders were eliminated-and was on the ice for the Cup presentation
He can play once the CHL season is over. Players drafted out of the CHL can't play in the AHL to start the year until they are in their 20 year old season. He will be back in PA this year.

So they should have just released him even though he was a RFA? Makes no sense. If he passes through waivers, he's valuable depth in case of injury.

So you think they are going to destroy their goaltending depth? because if they trade Pickard and Waive Mcbackup who would likely be claimed after what he's done in Toronto, then you have Andersen and a completely 100% unproven backup in Sparks and NOTHING else, if Andersen gets you are COMPLETELY ****ED

Sparks, Pickard, and McElhinney all have to go through waivers this year to be assigned to the AHL.

So assume you keep Sparks as backup to Andersen, you no-matter-what have to expose the other two to waivers.

Both could get claimed. The Leafs are at risk of not having depth anyway you slice it.

However, if a team claims Pickard or McElhinney, they have to play them at the NHL level, not AHL. So both could potentially clear waivers since not many teams (if any) are currently using a waiver exempt backup.

Just don't like McBackup - would rather keep Pickard, but really see him going back to the Avs.
Avs have three goalies that are better than Pickard, why would they even entertain the thought of going after him? Francouz was brought in as the best goalie from the KHL this offseason and he will be the undisputable starter in the A and Varlamov and Grubauer will split time between the pipes according to Bednar. There is absolutely no need for him in Colorado.

No need to trade him if he’s cleared waivers.

I doubt there’s a market for him if he hasn’t. The only way I’d think he’d make an NHL roster on opening night is if there’s an injury to one of the current starters or backups. As of now, I can’t think of any. Just seems like a weird guy to actively shop, but hey, it’s mid-August.

I understand that and that's why while not idea you have to keep 3 goalies on the roster, because if you waive 2 of the 3 they are likely getting claimed after what they have done in Toronto especially Mac.

OR you could waive 2 of the 3 but if you do you HAVE to sign either Steve Mason, or Kari Lethenin to enough money that you know they are making it through waivers, you CAN NOT have either K2 or Eamon Mcadam as your #3 if something happens to either Andersen or his backup, you just can't have that.

Because he doesn't fit that description and is no better than what we already have for backups.

Or if you are asking why we are seeking a potential replacement, Smith is 36 and in the final year of his contract.

Perhaps a trade with FLA for Reimer. He's not Mr. Right, but he's more like Mr. Right Now.

This shopping around isn't going so hot for TOR. Dubas is probably just trying to do Pickard a solid.

He will probably be put on waivers and whoever is the team with the lightest back up plan will grab him.

He also isn't very good at this point of his career.

I’m just wondering why people think he is a backup but had good numbers when Varlamov wad injured, considering COL was in a meltdown. I remember most COL fans thought Calvin would get protected over Varlamov (salary & health into consideration).

He is a waiver type goalie that will spend alot of time in the AHL. Good depth guy for an organization to have on a AHL team. He will be placed on waivers and spend the year on the Marlies id assume

You don't get it. They are shopping him now.

TOR should have known what they want to do with their goalie situation in April. If they want to trade him, fine, do it in June.

But some experts waited till August when most teams made their choice for their goalie situation already.
